In I Kings 3:1 we learn that Solomon entered into a treaty with Pharoah and married his daughter as part of the pact. Political marriages between monarchs were frequent in ancient (and even modern) times. But this fact is conspicuously absent from Chronicles. That is our first hint that this was not looked at as a smart move. Usually if something innocuous is missing from Chronicles that appears in Kings, it is something that the chronicler wanted to remove from the official record. The question is, then, why include this verse? It must have been that his marriage to the daughter of Pharaoh was not something that could have been completely swept under the rug. He even built for her her own palace!

The chronicler was then faced with a dilemma. So, the fact is added, but with a little extra context. In I Kings 9, the removal of the daughter of Pharaoh from the city of David is stated as almost as a throwaway fact: “As soon as Pharaoh’s daughter went up from the City of David to the palace that he had built for her, he built the Millo” (I Kings 9:24). In II Chronicles 8, however, we have the added declaration: “No wife of mine shall dwell in a palace of King David of Israel, for [the area] is sacred since the Ark of the LORD has entered it.”

Solomon now seems like a righteous man when it comes to the daughter of Pharaoh. He wishes to remove her from the city of David because the Ark was there. It also shows that he probably realized that this was not the best marriage situation. By adding this one additional line, the Chronicler is able to balance mentioning the unignorable fact of Solomon’s marriage to the daughter of Pharaoh while also trying to spin it to seem favorable to the King.

image: King Solomon and his wife Pharaoh's daughter (unknown author), CC /
