A close examination of the following comparison will reinforce several of the editorial assumptions we have been making regularly.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

2 Chronicles 7:1-4<\/span><\/p>\r\n

fire descended from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the LORD filled the House. The priests could not enter the House of the LORD, for the glory of the LORD filled the House of the LORD. All the Israelites witnessed the descent of the fire and the glory of the LORD on the House; they knelt with their faces to the ground and prostrated themselves, praising the LORD, \u201cFor He is good, for His steadfast love is eternal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before the LORD.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

When Solomon finished offering to the LORD all this prayer and supplication,<\/span><\/p>\r\n

he rose from where he had been kneeling, in front of the altar of the LORD, his hands spread out toward heaven. He stood, and in a loud voice blessed the whole congregation of Israel: \u201cPraised be the LORD who has granted a haven to His people Israel, just as He promised; not a single word has failed of all the gracious promises that He made through His servant Moses.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The two glaring discrepancies are the omission from Kings of the fire descending from heaven, and the omission from Chronicles of Solomon\u2019s blessing to the people. The inclusion of the heavenly fire in Chronicles is yet another attestation to Ezra\u2019s attempt to validate the Second Temple. A divine flame lit the altar in the Tabernacle; that was transferred to the First Temple and, by implication, to the Second.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The omission from Chronicles of Solomon\u2019s prayer illustrates the Chronicler\u2019s attempt to downplay the ongoing hostility the Jews faced. God\u2019s promise was: \u201cWhen you cross the Jordan and settle in the land that the LORD your God is allotting to you, and He grants you safety from all your enemies around you and you live in security, then you must bring everything that I command you to the site where the LORD your God will choose to establish His name\u201d (Deut. 12:10-11). With Sanbalat, Tobiah, and Geshem (see Nehemiah 2:19) leading the opposition to the rebuilding of Jerusalem, it could hardly be called \u201ca haven to His people Israel.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Following the inauguration ceremony, God appears to Solomon in a vision. Initially, God answers Solomon\u2019s prayer from Chapter 6. God promises that whenever calamities befall the nation, if they pray towards the Temple, God will answer their prayers. Then God provides Solomon with a carrot and a stick. The carrot:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

As for you, if you walk before Me as your father David walked before Me, doing all that I have commanded you, keeping My laws and rules,\/then I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever, in accordance with the Covenant I made with your father David, saying, \u2018You shall never lack a descendant ruling over Israel\u2019 (17-18).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A simple promise. If Solomon follows in the way of his father David and keeps the commandments, then his family will remain on the throne forever. The stick:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But if you turn away from Me and forsake My laws and commandments that I set before you, and go and serve other gods and worship them, then I will uproot them from My land that I gave them, and this House that I consecrated to My name I shall cast out of my sight, and make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples (19-20).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The punishment extends to expulsion from the land and destruction of the Temple. However, the punishment does not line up with the promise. One would think that if Solomon is promised that the Davidic line would last forever if he follows God\u2019s commandments then the punishment would be that it is cut off.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The second verse, however, is not \u201cyou\u201d singular, it is \u201cyou\u201d plural. God\u2019s warning is towards the people as a whole. If the people fail to follow God\u2019s commandments they will be expelled, and the Temple destroyed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This still reads as an odd juxtaposition. Solomon individually is offered a reward and the people collectively are then offered a much harsher punishment. The distinction between the two is in the type of transgression. Solomon must follow the laws and commandments, full stop. The people though must protect themselves from \u201cforsaking the laws and commandments\u2026<\/span>and serv[ing] other gods<\/span><\/i>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Now the imbalance makes sense. The monarch is required to follow all the laws, but the people will only receive their punishment if they go and serve other gods. The monarch has a much stricter regimen than the people. This descent of celestial fire does not appear in the parallel passage in Kings and is probably inspired by the miraculous fire that consumes Elijah\u2019s offering in 1 Kings 18. There are quite a few verses that do not appear in 1 Kings 8. What is replicated from Kings in this chapter are verses 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  2. Quantities.<\/em> The vast numbers of sacrifices is spelled out in verse 5. The sheer quantity requires special arrangements, which are described in verse 7.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. The day of the locust<\/em>. Beside the plague and hunger that Solomon mentioned in his prayer (in the previous chapter), in verse 13, God speaks of the locust.
