In Chapter 6, Solomon offers his inaugural supplication to God. His supplication can be split into four parts. The first part details the origin of the Temple project itself and its link to the lineage of David to Solomon. In the second section, Solomon explains that this house is not meant to be an actual house for God to live in, instead it is meant to be a focal point for prayer. In the third section Solomon prays that all who come to the Temple to pray- be they Israelite or foreigner should have their prayers heard. He details the reasons the nation may come to pray at the Temple: for attacks by foreign powers, for famine, and for other calamities. In the final section, Solomon offers a concluding prayer that God protect the Temple and those within on behalf of his father, King David.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

These four sections are all linked. The Temple project, conceived by King David, serves as a symbol of the enduring legacy of his household. When David is told he cannot build the Temple, God promises him that his son will build it instead. This building will be proof that his lineage will be everlasting. In order for the kingdom to survive, however, the Davidic line will need not only heirs, but also peace in the land. The people need their prayers heard for them to flourish as individuals and be saved from outside threats as a nation. Foreigners must also be in awe at the power of God so as not to cause harm. Solomon\u2019s concluding prayer hints at the link:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u2018Advance, O LORD God, to your resting-place, You and Your mighty Ark. Your priests, O LORD God, are clothed in triumph; Your loyal ones will rejoice in [Your] goodness. LORD God, do not reject Your anointed one; remember the loyalty of Your servant David\u201d (verses 41-42).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

If God rejects the Temple and all of its glory, then he is also rejecting the promise he made to David, and by extension Solomon and his progeny. For the house of David to stand, the Temple must stand as well.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

With just a few exceptions, this chapter is a faithful reproduction of the text of 1 Kings 8:12 ff.: King Solomon\u2019s address at the inauguration of the First Temple.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

One notable exception is the following:<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

1 Kings 8:16<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ever since I brought My people Israel out of Egypt, I have not chosen a city among all the tribes of Israel for building a House where My name might abide;<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0but I have chosen David to rule My people Israel.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

\r\n

2 Chr. 6:5-6<\/span><\/p>\r\n

From the time I brought My people out of the land of Egypt, I never chose a city from among all the tribes of Israel to build a House where My name might abide;<\/span><\/p>\r\n

nor did I choose anyone to be the leader of my people Israel.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But then I chose Jerusalem for My name to abide there,<\/span><\/p>\r\n

and I chose David to rule My people Israel.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n

Like other such discrepancies that we have noted previously, the elements of Davidic kingship and the centrality of Jerusalem receive greater emphasis in Chronicles due to the Chronicler\u2019s abiding concern for the renewal of the former and the continuation of the latter.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The final lines of our chapter also depart from the Kings\u2019 text, with Psalms filling in for a conclusion entirely absent there.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The text that has been incorporated into the liturgy when the Torah is returned to the Ark is that of Psalms; whereas Chronicles was chosen over Psalms to be part of the daily <\/span>Shacharit<\/em> <\/span>liturgy, as <\/span>we explained in our comments to 1 Chronicles 16.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\r\n

This poetic insertion at the end of Solomon\u2019s speech is taken from Psalm 132:8-10, though there are two divergent formulations, one at the end of the second line of poetry and the other in the second verset of the last line. It is possible that the Chronicler was drawn to quote the psalm because of its representation of the triumphant role of the priests alongside the Davidic monarch.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. Comp. lit<\/em>. Most of this chapter is parallel to 1 Kings 8. The parallel text to the festive conclusion of Solomon\u2019s prayer (verses 41-42) can also be found, with minor differences in Psalms 132 (verses 8-10).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Aware of the paradox<\/em>. This is how it sounds: \u201cThen Solomon declared: \u201cThe LORD has chosen To abide in a thick cloud; A stately House, And a place where You May dwell forever\u201d (verses 1-2).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. Threefold blessing<\/em>. \u201cThe king turned and blessed the whole congregation of Israel. He said,\u201cBlessed is the LORD God of Israel\u201d (verses 4-5) who chose David and Jerusalem. The congregation is blessed, as is God and His choices.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. Geolocation<\/em>. Verses 12-13 describe where Solomon is when he speaks his prayer. In verse 12: \u201cstanding before the altar of the LORD in front of the whole congregation of Israel, he spread forth his hands.\u201d Verse 13, which by the way is not found in the parallel texts in 1 Kings, places him not just opposite the altar but actually on the bronze platform <\/span>(<\/span><\/i>kiyor nechoshet<\/span><\/em>)<\/span><\/i> which he had built. There, rising to 5 cubits (2.5 meters) \u201cHe stood on it; then, kneeling in front of the whole congregation of Israel, he spread forth his hands to heaven.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  5. Echoes of Psalms<\/em>. The last verses of the chapter are parallel to verses from Psalms 132 - and not by accident.
