The last verse of II Chronicles 5, marking the completion of the Temple, calls to mind a similar occurrence when the Tabernacle was initially erected:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

II Chron 5:14 (<\/span>see also I Kings 8:11<\/span><\/i>)
\r\n<\/span>The priests could not stay and perform the service because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the House of God.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ex. 40:34-5
\r\n<\/span>The cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the Tabernacle. Moses could not enter the Tent of Meeting, because the cloud had settled upon it and the glory of the LORD filled the Tabernacle.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Rashbam <\/span>asserts that the Divine cloud that descended upon the Tabernacle, did so in order to demonstrate God\u2019s love for the Jewish people, and it would be logical to assume that the same was true with respect to the Temple. However, he adds that the Divine presence then \u201ccontracted itself,\u201d eventually residing above the ark.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Positing such a progression of God\u2019s glory, <\/span>Rashbam <\/span>reconciles Exodus 40 with other verses in the Torah:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ex.. 25:22
\r\n<\/span>There I will meet with you, and I will impart to you\u2014from above the cover, from between the two cherubim that are on top of the ark of the Pact\u2014all that I will command you concerning the Israelite people.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Num. 7:89
\r\n<\/span>And when Moses went into the tent of meeting that He might speak with him, then he heard the Voice speaking unto him from above the ark-cover that was upon the ark of the testimony, from between the two cherubim\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But then, at the end of his comments on v. 35, <\/span>Rashbam <\/span>refers to Rashi\u2019s commentary:
\r\n<\/span>AND MOSES WAS NOT ABLE TO COME INTO THE APPOINTED TENT \u2014 But another verse says, (Numbers 7:89) \u201cAnd when Moses came into the appointed tent\u2026\u201d! There comes, however, a third verse and reconciles these apparently contradictory verses, for it says here \u201cFor (<\/span>or when<\/span><\/em>) the cloud abode thereon (<\/span>on the appointed tent<\/span><\/em>.)\u201d Hence you may say: so long as the cloud was upon it \u201che was not able to come into the appointed tent\u201d, but as soon as the cloud disappeared, he entered it and spoke with Him (Sifra, Braita d'Rabbi Yishmael 18).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Rashbam <\/span>advances the suggestion that keeping in mind two divergent interpretations, e.g., his and Rashi\u2019s (his grandfather), is a good way to appreciate the complexity of the Torah:<\/span>
\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u2026Anyone who pays attention to the words of our Creator, should not ignore the inferences drawn by my grandfather, Rabbeinu Shlomo, and should not turn his back upon them. This is because the majority of the <\/span>halachot<\/em> <\/span>and <\/span>derashot<\/em> <\/span>come close to the simple meaning of the biblical text, whether they are based upon superfluous words or changes in language, and one should study all of them. It would be best if one were to take seriously what I have explained, and also from these do not turn your back upon them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A discrepancy appearing towards the beginning of our chapter already caught the attention of the Talmud. Our text reads: \u201cWhen all the elders of Israel had come, the Levites carried the Ark\u201c (4), while 1 Kings reads: \u201cWhen all the elders of Israel had come, the priests lifted the Ark\u201c (8:3). The talmudic resolution is: \u201cR. Joshua ben Levi said: In 24 places, priests were called Levites\u201d (Yevamot 86b). (Although the coincidence of 24 in the context of priests and Levites, who served in 24 divisions, invites further examination).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

While R. Joshua illustrated this via a single verse\u2014\u201cBut the levitical priests (<\/span>hakohanim haleviyim<\/span><\/em>) descended from Zadok\u201d (Ezekiel 44:15)\u2014our verse\u00a0 is clearly one of the remaining 23. In fact, the very next verse in our chapter uses the identical phrase: \u201cThey brought up the Ark and the Tent of Meeting and all the holy vessels that were in the Tent\u2014the Levite priests brought them up\u201d (5).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

If we refer back to the Torah, it appears that the Levites were charged with carrying the Ark: \u201cTheir [the Kehat family of Levites] duties comprised: the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, and the sacred utensils that were used with them\u201d (Numbers 3:31). Indeed, according to a Tosefta (Sotah 8:2):<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Daily, the Levites would bear the Ark; [however] on this day [that they crossed the Jordan], the priests bore it, to wit: \u201cWhen the feet of the priests bearing the Ark of the L<\/span>ORD<\/span>, the Sovereign of all the earth, come to rest in the waters of the Jordan\u201d (Joshua 3:13). R. Yosi said: On three occasions the priests bore the Ark: once, when Israel crossed the Jordan, once when they circumambulated Jericho, and once when it was returned to its place.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Arguably, our pair of texts is referring to that third occasion. As Ralbag explained: \u201cIt is my opinion that the Levites carried [the Ark] up to the Temple, and the priests took it from there and brought it to its resting place in the sanctuary\u201d as attested to, here, in v.7: \u201cThe priests brought the Ark of the L<\/span>ORD<\/span>\u2019s Covenant to its place in the inner Sanctuary of the House, in the Holy of Holies, beneath the wings of the cherubim.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chapter 5 details the inauguration of the Temple. Solomon gathers everyone together to bring the Ark from the city of David to the Temple mount. \u201cThey brought up the Ark and the Tent of Meeting and all the holy vessels that were in the Tent\u2014the Levite priests brought them up\u201d (verse 5). This procession completes the one started by King David when he brought the Ark from the house of Obinadav. The Ark remains in the Temple until Josiah hides it before the destruction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But this verse also brings up another mystery- what happened to the Tent of Meeting?\u00a0 We know the Ark made it to the Temple based on this chapter. In Chapter 4, there was a question about whether the original altar made it to the Temple. Most commentators believed that the original one was built up. Solomon also builds ten tables and ten menorahs but the original ones were centered there as well. The remaining utensils are all new as detailed in chapter 5.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

So what happened to the actual Tent of Meeting? The Mishkan and the Tent of Meeting do not get mentioned again in Tanach. It is possible that they were stored somewhere in the Temple itself. It would seem odd given the reluctance to replace any of the original vessels that the actual structure itself was discarded. The text itself provides no further hint except for the fact that it was brought up during this procession to the new Temple. After that, it is a mystery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cCloud\u201d is repeatedly the physical manifestation of God\u2019s presence or \u201cglory\u201d (see the next verse), and so this cloud is not from the incense or the burning sacrifices but a miraculous manifestation of the divine.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
