Malbim noted in his opening remarks: \u201cHere [Scripture] reported what David did before he died. After coronating Solomon, he prepared himself to go in the way of all flesh by establishing detachments of priests and Levites. Then he gave Solomon his instructions and was gathered unto his people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

If verse 1 of this chapter had a counterpart in Early Prophets, it would begin with the first verse of 1 Kings: \u201cKing David was now old, advanced in years\u201d (1:1) and then segue directly to \u201cSolomon should succeed me as king\u201d (1:30). In other words, Chronicles omits the fraternal struggle between Adonijah and Solomon over the succession, and replaces it with the establishment of the Levitical divisions (<\/span>machlakot<\/span><\/em>, 6) who were \u201cin charge of the work of the House of the LORD\u2026 officers and magistrates\u2026 gatekeepers, and\u2026 praising the LORD\u201d (4-5).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The detailed list of Levitical appointments is punctuated by the genealogies of Aaron and Moses. \u201cAaron was set apart, he and his sons, forever, to be consecrated as most holy, to make burnt offerings to the LORD and serve Him and pronounce blessings in His name forever\u201d (13), and \u201cAs for Moses, the man of God, his sons were named after the tribe of Levi\u201d (14). The epithet attached to Moses invites interest.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Six times in Tanakh Moses is called \u201cA man of God\u201d: In the Torah (Deut. 33:1), Joshua (14:6), Psalms (90:1), Ezra (3:2), here, and 2 Chronicles (30:16). However, the title is far from being his exclusively; the epithet <\/span>ish ha\u2019elohim<\/span><\/em> appears some twenty more times in Tanakh\u2014usually, if not invariably, in reference to a prophet. Samuel is so identified (1 Samuel 9:10) as are Elijah (1 Kings 17:18) and Elisha (2 Kings 4:16). Somewhat more surprising is its use to describe King David (Nehemiah 12:24, 36) where it relates, specifically, to his composition of the Psalms. While some\u2014like Sa`adyah Gaon\u2014saw that as an indication that they were prophetic, a more conventional understanding would say that they were divinely inspired.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Indeed, Radak observed that \u201cIt is the custom of Scripture to aggrandize something by relating it to God.\u201d Ezekiel\u2019s <\/span>mar\u2019ot elohim<\/span><\/em> were not \u201cvisions of God,\u201d since He is imperceptible, but \u201cdivine\/magnificent visions,\u201d and Adam was not created in \u201cGod\u2019s image,\u201d since He is formless, but in \u201ca divine\/magnificent image.\u201d Moses, like other prophets, enjoyed a status that was so far above the ordinary that Scripture found no better way to delineate it than \u201cby relating it to God.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cAmong the last acts of David was the counting of the Levites from the age of twenty and upward\u201d (verse 27).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This and the following chapters recount not only the census figures but also the work assignments of the Levites and priests in the Temple. Why was it necessary to make permanent work assignments?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Rabbis in Number Rabbah (5:1) offered some opposing perspectives. Rabbi Eliezer ben Pedat said in the name of Rabbi Yose Ben Zimra, that some Levites were overly concerned by the risk inherent in handling the Holy Ark, and avoid that assignment in favor of less risky tasks. To avoid this slight to the ark, permanent assignments were necessary.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Rabbi Samuel Bar Nachman disagreed. On the contrary, he said that many people were ready to give their lives for the ark, and also sought the greater reward that accompanied the hazardous but important task. From his perspective, it was necessary to have an authoritative division of assignments to prevent animosity and quarrels.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We cannot know which of the rabbis, if any, correctly understood the mindset that motivated King David to prepare a Levitical duty roster even before the Temple was constructed. Conversely, it isn\u2019t difficult to imagine the situation within the community of each of them: where the tendency was to leave important but difficult tasks for others, and where leaders sought honor and took on more than they could handle even at the cost of less successful work. Or perhaps they were addressing not different communities but different people within the same community. An even finer resolution should also be considered: the varying behavior of the same person in diverse places and situations.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

What is clear (to me at least) is that human nature has not changed. In any group, workplace, community or even family, organization for getting the job done is best done by considering not only individual strengths and skills but also character traits.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In chapter 21 we learned that David was punished for running a census. In chapter 23, however, we are told \u201cAmong the last acts of David was the counting of the Levites from the age of twenty and upward\u201d (verse 27).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Why is this census different?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The first answer is that this was not the same type of counting. In verse 6 we learn that David divided the Levites up. The census taken in verse 27 is a part of that dividing up instead of a census with the sole intention of trying to see how many people are in Israel as in chapter 21.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Another possibility is that the census in chapter 21 was meant to be destructive. God was angry at the people so he caused David to count in order to bring calamity. This census had the pure intention of setting up service in the temple. Another possibility is that this census was only for a small segment of Israel: the Levites 20 years and older. A specific discrete census is ok, but a general census of the entire people is a sin. Exodus 30:11-12 maintains that a census must be conducted through payment of the half shekel as a means of counting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cThe Lord spoke to Moses, saying: When you take a census of the Israelite people according to their enrollment, each shall pay the Lord a ransom for himself on being enrolled, that no plague may come upon them through their being enrolled. This is what everyone who is entered in the records shall pay: a half shekel by the sanctuary weight\u2026 a half shekel as an offering to the Lord.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Note that the prohibition is counting all the Israelite people.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

David learned his lesson from chapter 21, and in this case conducted a proper limited census for pure intentions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

23:3 \u201cAnd the Levites from the age of thirty were counted and their head count for the males was thirty-eight thousand.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Chronicler now interrupts the narrative momentum of the David story to return to his fixation on the numbers and the genealogy of the Levites. He is less interested in retelling the biblical story than in confirming the legitimacy and the importance of the sacerdotal caste.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. Distinguished, and so orderly<\/em>. \u201cWhen David reached a ripe old age, he made his son Solomon king over Israel\u201d (verse 1). One verse of distinguished old age, and an orderly transition of the kingship, smoothes over all the wrinkles of 1 Kings 1-2. There, an old king was described who could not stay warm, about his son Adonijah who crowns himself, with the help of his friends, about Bathsheba\u2019s and Nathan the prophet\u2019s lobbying efforts on behalf of getting Solomon crowned king, and the will that is all about payback. Smooth, it is not. ,\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. The jobs of the Levites<\/em>. According to verse 4, the Levites did not only serve in the Temple cult, they were also \u201cofficers and magistrates.\u201d Are these the same officials that the Torah commands should be \u201cappointed in all your gates,\u201d from 718 chapters ago (Deut. 16)?<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. Between the lines<\/em>. As part of the lists of the Levites, there are stories about family and fertility challenges. There are those who \u201cdid not have many children, so they were enrolled together as a single clan\u201d (verse 11), those who had only one child, but many grandchildren (verse 16), and those who (like Zelophehad) died \u201chaving no sons but only daughters\u201d who married in the family (verse 22).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
