That pool of Priests and Levites numbered in the thousands. In Chapter 25 we learn that an additional 288 musicians from the tribe of Levi were appointed, in 24 groups of 12, to work alongside the administrative units at all times. A full chapter of Chronicles is dedicated to describing the musicians, their instruments, and their musical tutelage. How extraordinary that music was not just understood as a beautification of Temple service, but a necessary component.

The first verse of Chronicles 25 clarifies the job of musicians. It does not say that they “played” their instruments, but that they “prophesied while using harps, lyre and cymbals.” The music of the Levites was not an accompaniment to Temple service, it was service in its own right. Our sages point out that the word for “prophecy” is derived from the root “niv” referring to speech. Just as speech was the mode of expression for our prophets, so too was music the mode of expression for the Levites.

Most of the text in this chapter is taken up with lists of names, consistent with much of the first Book of Chronicles. Rabbi Menachem Leibtag of outorah.org points out a fascinating divergence in the names of the 14 sons of Heman that are detailed. The first six sons have common names for that era, but the remaining eight sons have names that have never appeared before and never appear again in Tanach. The names do, however, mirror text found in the first chapter of The Book of Isaiah.

The opening prophecies of Isaiah, given well into the First Temple era, serve as a warning that the nation is in trouble, and their Temple itself in jeopardy. From several reports in the Book of Samuel, we know that wandering bands of prophets in the early biblical period used musical instruments to work themselves into a vatic frenzy (a phenomenon that can still be observed among “Holy Rollers” in the United States). In this case, the verb for immersing in ecstasy is the same root but in reflexive conjugation. Here, the passive conjugation (nif’al) occurs, which is the form used when the so-called Literary Prophets deliver their message. One may infer a kind of domestication of ecstasy in the temple music: it induced an elevated state, and the words sung--probably the set words of psalms--were regarded as a kind of gateway to the sacred. Thus in verse 3, Jeduthun is said to be “prophesying with the lyre, acclaiming and praising the LORD,” and those paired verbs appear regular in the psalms of praise.

From: Robert Alter, The Hebrew Bible, vol. 3: Writings, W.
