The saga of the counting continues in chapter 27. Chapter 21 discussed the catastrophic decision by King David to conduct a census. There, King David initiates the census and Joab tries to talk him out of it:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Satan arose against Israel and incited David to number Israel. David said to Joab and to the commanders of the army, \u2018Go and count Israel from Beer-sheba to Dan and bring me information as to their number.\u2019 Joab answered, \u2018May the LORD increase His people a hundredfold; my lord king, are they not all subjects of my lord? Why should my lord require this? Why should it be a cause of guilt for Israel?\u2019 (21:1-3).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chapter 27 paints a very different picture:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

David did not take a census of those under twenty years of age, for the LORD had promised to make Israel as numerous as the stars of heaven. Joab son of Zeruiah did begin to count them, but he did not finish; wrath struck Israel on account of this, and the census was not entered into the account of the chronicles of King David (verses 23-24).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Chapter 27 places the blame squarely on the shoulders of Joab. It also seems to absolve King David, by noting what he did not do (count those twenty and under) and then throwing in a line that explains why he did not, that praises God (\u201cFor the Lord had promised to make Israel as numerous as the stars\u201d).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

What is also odd is that verse 24 ends with a direction to the \"chronicles of King David.\" What does this line mean? If this alternate source is the same account as in chapter 21 then maybe this was a subtle note from the author of this chapter. Because this is the end of King David\u2019s life, and the chapters are about his accomplishments, these chapters are not the place to list King David\u2019s foibles. Therefore, the author fudges history a bit here, but does direct the reader to look at chapter 21 to get the full story.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Our chapter hosts a rather interesting array of data. First (2-15), it lists the monthly divisions of Israelites who were pressed into royal service, along with the names of their respective divisional heads. Then (16-22) it lists the names of the princes of Israel by their tribes, of which, curiously, Gad and Asher are omitted while Manasseh had two princes, for its holdings on each side of the Jordan.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

There is also the detail of David\u2019s \u201ccabinet,\u201d featuring his Secretary of Treasury (25), Labor, with assorted undersecretaries (26-31), his counselors (32), first-friend (33), and commander-in-chief (34). The last verse, however, \u201cAfter Ahitophel were Jehoiada son of Benaiah, and Abiathar; the commander of the king\u2019s army was Joab\u201d (34) is rendered in considerably greater detail by the Aramaic Targum:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When they needed to go out to battle, they would consult with Ahitophel; subsequently, they would consult the Urim V\u2019Tumim via Jehoiada son of Benaiah, dean of the Sanhedrin and trustee of the priesthood, and via Abiathar the High Priest. After consulting the Urim V\u2019Tumim, they would go out to battle\u2014infantry, archers, and artillery\u2014overseen by the royal general of the army, Joab.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In 2 Samuel 16 these two engage in a dramatic confrontation after Ahitophel has gone over to the usurper Absalom and Hushai comes to Absalom\u2019s court as David\u2019s secret agent to foil Ahitophel\u2019s counsel. The Chronicler, as usual avoiding such complications, mentions nothing of this.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
