\u201cAnd the plan of all that he had by the spirit: of the courts of the House of the LORD and all its surrounding chambers, and of the treasuries of the House of God and of the treasuries of the holy things<\/em> (verse 11).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The word \u201cruach<\/em>\u201d is usually translated as the holy spirit. This is a type of \u201cprophetic light\u201d that guides the receiver to suggest or act in a way that God wants. Most commentators translate the word here as the holy spirit, the\u00a0 idea being that the plans for the Temple were conceived with the help of God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

There are a few interesting questions here. The first is: why is the word holy lacking? Normally this is presented as a phrase \u201cthe holy spirit.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Second, why does this spirit appear in the middle of the description of what David told Solomon? Shouldn\u2019t the chapter begin with something along the lines of \u201cand these are the plans for the Temple given to David with the holy spirit\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Finally, later on in this very chapter, David tells Solomon \u201cAll this that the LORD made me understand by His hand on me, I give you in writing\u2014the plan of all the works\u201d(verse 17). What is the purpose of the double mention of divine direction? Wouldn\u2019t it have been sufficient for David at the end to say that God told him what to do?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Perhaps the \u201cspirit\u201d in verse 11 is not the holy spirit. Yes, God shows David how to build the temple, as he tells Solomon at the end of the chapter. This first \u201cnon-holy\u201d spirit is maybe David\u2019s personal enthusiasm for the project. Despite being told by God that he would not complete the Temple, David still goes all in- and even decided the exact brick layout.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In our comments to Chapter 17, we noted several discrepancies between that chapter and 2 Samuel 7, which it parallels. One of them was:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We commented: \u201cThe ostensibly minor alteration of \u2018your [David\u2019s] throne\u2019 to \u2018his [Solomon\u2019s] throne,\u2019 reflects an idiosyncratic position on the validity of Solomon\u2019s succession\u2014which we will discuss at greater length apropos of 1 Chronicles 29:23.\u201d It is time to redeem that pledge.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In five places, Chronicles takes an idiosyncratic position on the issue of Solomon\u2019s succession to David, asserting that the throne on which he sat and on which the Davidic dynasty reposed belonged, in actuality, to God Himself.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  • I will install him in <\/span>My house and in My kingship<\/strong> forever, and his throne shall be established forever (1 Chr. 17:14).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  • And of all my sons\u2014for many are the sons the LORD gave me\u2014He chose my son Solomon to sit on <\/span>the throne of the kingdom of the LORD<\/strong> over Israel (1 Chr. 28:5).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  • Blessed is the LORD your God, who favored you and <\/span>set you on His throne<\/strong><\/span> as a king before the LORD. It is because of your God\u2019s love for Israel and in order to establish them forever that He made you king over them to execute righteous justice (2 Chr. 9:8).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  • Now you are bent on opposing <\/span>the kingdom of the LORD<\/strong>, which is in the charge of the sons of David, because you are a great multitude and possess the golden calves that Jeroboam made for you as gods (2 Chr. 13:8).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  • Solomon successfully took over <\/span>the throne of the LORD<\/strong> as king instead of his father David, and all went well with him. All Israel accepted him (1 Chr. 29:23).<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n

    Just how one sits on a divine throne will be explained in Chapter 29.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

    28:11 \u201cAnd David gave to Solomon the plans of the entrance hall and its inner rooms and the space for storerooms and its upper chambers and its inner rooms and the space for the Ark covering.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

    2 Samuel and 1 Kings makes no mention of David\u2019s conveying the plan of the Temple, here said to be written down for him by God, to Solomon. This invention is in keeping with the Chronicler\u2019s agenda to represent David as the virtual though not the actual builder of the Temple.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This is the third time that we learn that David won\u2019t be building the Temple (the first was in 2 Sam 7, the second in 1 Chron 17), but this is the first time we hear of the reason: \u201cGod said to me, \u2018You will not build a house for My name, for you are a man of battles and have shed blood.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
    2. Son and father<\/em>, father and son. Follow the family epithets in the chapter and discover the key not only to the relationship between David and Solomon, but also between the Davidic dynasty and God.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
    3. Full partner<\/em>. Who created the plans for the Temple? David. But not by himself! Note verse 12: \u201cand the plan of all that he had by the spirit\u201d (that is divine inspiration), and in verse 19: \u201c\u201cAll this that the LORD made me understand by His hand on me.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
