Our<\/span> chapter begins<\/span><\/a>: \u201cThen Solomon began to build the House of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where [the Lord] had appeared to his father David, at the place which David had designated, at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.\u201d See also <\/span>I Kings 6:1<\/span><\/a>, and on David\u2019s designation of the site, see<\/span> II Samuel 24:18-25<\/span><\/a> and<\/span> I Chronicles 21:22-30<\/span><\/a>.<\/span> Moriah<\/span><\/a> plays an important role in Scripture and post-Biblical tradition. It is first mentioned when God tells Abraham: \u201cTake your son, your favored one, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I will show you\u201d. This is the place where Abraham builds the altar of the Aqedah (<\/span>Genesis 22:2-9<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In<\/span> Talmud Yerushalmi<\/span><\/a> and<\/span> Talmud Bavli<\/span><\/a> we find the Rabbis debating the various midrashic interpretations of the name \u201cMoriah\u201d. Rabbi Levi bar \u1e24ama says that Moriah, the Temple Mount where the Sanhedrin convened, is the mountain from which instruction [<\/span>hora\u2019a<\/span><\/em>] went out to the Jewish people. But Rabbi \u1e24anina said that Moriah is the mountain from which fear [<\/span>mora<\/span><\/em>\u2019<\/span><\/i>] went out to the nations of the world, as this place signifies God\u2019s choice of the Jewish people.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In Jewish legend, Mount Moriah becomes endowed with mythic characteristics. According to<\/span> Midrash Bereshit Rabbah<\/span><\/a>, Abraham and Isaac first saw Mount Moriah from Mount Scopus (<\/span>Har Ha-Tzofim<\/span><\/em>), which appeared to them as \u201ca glorious mountain encircled by a cloud\u201d, while the two servants accompanying them saw only desert. Indeed, Abraham is said to have seen on Mount Moriah \u201ca pillar of fire extending from the earth to the heavens\u201d, perhaps foreshadowing the burnt offerings that would be offered in the Temple (see Marc Bregman,<\/span> Aqedah: Midrash as Visualization<\/span><\/a>). Moreover, God is depicted as having pointed out with a finger to Abraham the Altar on Mount Moriah, telling him that this was the very Altar on which Cain and Abel sacrificed (<\/span>Genesis 4:3-4<\/span><\/a>) and the same Altar on which Noah offered sacrifices after coming out of the Ark after the Flood (<\/span>Genesis 8:20<\/span><\/a>). For<\/span> Genesis 22:9<\/span><\/a> specifically refers to \u201c\u2026the<\/span> Altar <\/span>\u2026\u201d built by Abraham, indicating that this was the very same Altar on which Adam\u2019s first descendants had previously sacrificed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Maimonides<\/span><\/a> rules that the Temple Altar was placed very precisely, and it may never be situated anywhere else. For it was on the Altar in the future Temple that Isaac was bound on Mount Moriah and this is the very site upon which \u201cSolomon began to build the House of the Lord in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah\u201d (<\/span>II Chronicles 3:1<\/span><\/a>). The sacrifices that were offered in Solomon\u2019s Temple for atonement were offered on the same Altar on which Adam sacrificed (<\/span>Bavli Avodah Zarah 8a<\/span><\/a>) and from whose earth he was created (<\/span>Yerushalmi Nazir 7:2<\/span><\/a>). This teaches that \u201cHumans were created from the place of atonement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>","post_main_content_image":{"id":79598,"alt":"","title":"zech11-cedars In 2 Chronicles 3, we read about the various furnishings that King Solomon made for the Temple. One of those fixtures was the curtain: \u201cHe made the curtain of blue, purple, and crimson yarn and fine linen, and he worked cherubim into it\u201d (verse 14).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The Hebrew word translated here as \u201cfine linen\u201d is <\/span>butz<\/span><\/em>. <\/span><\/i>Those who hear the Book of Esther read every year will recognize it from there as well: \u201cwhite cotton and blue wool, caught up by cords of fine linen\u201d (Esther 1:6).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

However, anyone who speaks Modern Hebrew may be confused. Today, the homograph <\/span>botz<\/span><\/em>\u00a0means \u201cmud.\u201d How could the same word mean both \u201cfine linen\u201d and \u201cmud\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Let\u2019s first look at the sense of <\/span>butz<\/span><\/em>\u00a0as \u201cfine linen.\u201d It originated from a Semitic root meaning \u201cwhite,\u201d and that also led to the Hebrew word <\/span>beitza<\/span><\/em>\u00a0\u2013 \u201cegg.\u201d\u00a0 This same root later gave us the Hebrew word for the white metal, zinc: <\/span>avatz<\/span><\/em>. A Greek word for linen, byssus, was borrowed from the Hebrew <\/span>[butz] <\/span><\/i>(or another Semitic cognate), and ended up in English as well, meaning the silky threads secreted by some mollusks.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

However, the word <\/span>botz<\/span><\/em>, meaning mud or silt, has a different origin. It appears only once in the Bible, \u201cNow that your feet are sunk in the mire\u201d (Jeremiah 38:22). It comes from the root <\/span>b-tz-tz<\/span><\/em>, meaning \u201cto exude.\u201d That same root gives us the Hebrew word for swamp or marsh\u2013 <\/span>bitza<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

There is a related word whose connection to the two roots above is not clear. <\/span>Bitzbetz<\/span><\/em>\u00a0means \u201cto poke out, sprout, burst forth.\u201d Some scholars say that it is related to <\/span>bitza<\/span><\/em>, in the way that mud oozes out of a swamp. Others say that <\/span>bitzbetz<\/span><\/em>\u00a0can also mean to shine, and so derives from the \u201cwhite\u201d of linen and eggs.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Once again, we see that even words that look very similar can be as different as mud and linen.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

At the very end of the chapter, Solomon builds two columns at the entrance to the Temple chamber. \u201cHe erected the columns in front of the Great Hall, one to its right and one to its left; the one to the right was called Jachin, and the one to the left, Boaz.\u201d (verse 17).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

What do these two names mean? Rashi explains that Jachin is the House of David which is compared to the moon in Psalm 89:38: \u201cLike the moon which is established (<\/span>yachin)<\/span><\/i> forever.\u201d\u00a0 Boaz, then, corresponds to the sun which is strong (<\/span>oz)<\/span><\/i>. Rashi also brings a second explanation that Hiram, one of the sons of Dan, built the pillars and named one after his forefather Samson who pulled the two pillars down on the Philistines. In turn, Solomon names the other for Boaz, the husband of Ruth and forefather of the house of David.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Radak and Metzudat David offers a more simplistic approach- one is Jachin because the Temple should be established forever, and the other was Boaz as an amalgamation of \u201c<\/span>bo<\/span><\/i> az<\/span><\/i>\u201d- \u201cin it is strength.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

If we look at this story from the modern lens, Rashi\u2019s second opinion seems to make the most sense. Nowadays almost everything in a synagogue is named after someone. But if we look back at biblical sources, we do not really see this same phenomenon. It is more likely, then, that Solomon named the columns like Radak and Metzudot David suggested to offer protection and good luck to the building.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

There is another possibility that borrows from some of Rashi\u2019s second opinion. The column Boaz is named after Solomon\u2019s forefather. So what is Yachin? We learn in the book of Nechemia that there is a priestly family with the name Yachin (Nechemia 11:10). Perhaps this name was connected to the priestly families at the time of Solomon as well. The two columns, therefore, were named after the two pillars of leadership- the house of David and the priests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The details of construction that occupy this chapter roughly parallel the details enumerated in 1 Kings 6. And yet, enough of those earlier details are omitted here to suggest that a comparison is edifying.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Both sources date the start of construction to the 4<\/span>th<\/span> year and 2<\/span>nd<\/span> month of Solomon\u2019s reign. Yet, only Kings associates that date with \u201cthe four hundred and eightieth year after the Israelites left the land of Egypt\u201d (1) and only Chronicles takes note of its location\u2014\"on Mount Moriah, where [the LORD] had appeared to his father David\u201d (1). The latter note is consistent with our earlier observations on the Chronicler\u2019s fascination with King David; the former, however, is part and parcel of a larger tendency within the Book of Chronicles that eliminates references to the Exodus, even, as in this case, when they are an integral part of the received tradition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

I have not found any previous attempt to explain these omissions, however it appears to me that the Chronicler\u2019s failure to acknowledge the Exodus from Egypt redounds to his advantage, in fulfillment of a prophetic promise made by Jeremiah in the wake of the destruction of the First Temple:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Assuredly, a time is coming\u2014declares the LORD\u2014when it shall no more be said, \u201cAs the LORD lives who brought the Israelites out of the land of Egypt,\u201d but rather, \u201cAs the LORD lives who brought the Israelites out of the northland, and out of all the lands to which He had banished them.\u201d For I will bring them back to their land, which I gave to their fathers\u201d (16:14-15).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In the midst of the detailed description of building the Temple, replete with the materials used and the dimensions of scale of rooms and vessels and courtyards, two Temple structures stand out. The 40-cubit (about 60 feet) tall, freestanding bronze pillars which grace the entrance to the Temple are given the names Jachin and Boaz. The etymology of Jachin and Boaz is debated by our sages. But whether these pillars are named after biblical ancestors or simply for the meaning of the words, the fact that King Solomon saw fit to name them speaks to the significance of this entranceway.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The power of names is endemic to Judaism. The Midrash tells us that the one remaining vestige of prophecy in our world today is evident when we name our children. It is through a partnership with God and His gift of prophecy that we come to know what our children\u2019s names are. Names are not meant to describe characteristics or purpose \u2013 that is what labels do. There are objects, though, that have intrinsic meaning beyond any functional purpose. Entrance ways are one of those things. The most well-known biblical entranceway is the doorposts in Egypt which marked the Jewish homes for salvation. Their significance endures until today through our placement of <\/span>mezuzot<\/em> <\/span>on our own doorways to remind us of who we are and what we stand for every time we enter or exit our home. As Rabbi Shraga Simmons (aish.com) explains it, \u201c<\/span>Having a mezuzah on each room means that as we move from one domain, one sphere of activity, to another, we renew our consciousness of God's presence and act in a way that sanctifies His Name.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Radak (1 Kings 7:21) suggests that Solomon named the pillars to be a positive omen for the nation \u2013 that God should establish (<\/span>Jachin<\/span><\/em>) the Temple forever and endow it with strength and endurance (<\/span>Boaz<\/span><\/em>). These are not utilitarian names - they are King Solomon\u2019s hope and vision for the Temple and the Jewish people. As far as we know, the names were not etched into the pillars, nor was there any dedication plaque. The naming of the pillars simply imbued the entranceway to the Temple with the power to remind those who entered that in doing so they were crossing the threshold from the mundane to the holy. The Hebrew reads \u201cin the house of the Holy of Holies,\u201d but what is indicated by \u201chouse\u201d is unclear. Perhaps it means \u201carea\u201d or \u201chousing,\u201d but it may well be an inadvertent scribal repetition, triggered by the multiple recurrences of \u201chouse\u201d in the surrounding text.<\/span><\/p>\r\n
