While Chapter 13 paralleled 2 Samuel 6, our chapter reverts to 2 Samuel 5: 11 ff., describing the assistance that King Hiram of Tyre provided David in the construction of his palace and listing the sons he fathered there. In the latter instance, we encountered an internal reprise, since the names of those sons were already provided in 3:5-8, with the usual numerous variations in spelling, although, in this instance, not in sequence of birth (see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/867\/post\/98908\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our comments on Chapter 3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another variation relates to the Philistine attack on Emek Rephaim (9 ff.). Our chapter states that \u201cThe Philistines came and raided the Valley of Rephaim\u201d (9). The Hebrew is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vayifsh\u2019tu<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The verb <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>p-sh-t<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 literally, to spread out \u2014 is used to designate a military activity (attack or raid: e.g., Judges 20:37, 1 Samuel 27:8). The corresponding passage in 2 Samuel, however, reads: \u201cThe Philistines came and spread out over , <em>vayint'shu,\u00a0<\/em>the Valley of Rephaim\u201d (5:18), utilizing the verb <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n-t-sh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which usually means to forsake or abandon (cf. 1 Samuel 12:22, Psalms 94:14).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The medieval exegetes are unanimous in treating them as entirely synonymous, but it is possible, by combining their literal meanings, to draw a more complete picture of the Philistine intentions and actions. Knowing of David\u2019s military prowess\u2014he had served as a mercenary for Achish, king of Gath, who ceded the city of Ziklag to him (12:1 ff.)\u2014the Philistines established their headquarters in the valley and a garrison in Bethlehem (11:16) to prevent David, who was still in Hebron, from capturing Jebus (Jerusalem) and to prevent reinforcements from reaching him from the north. What about us?\r\n\r\n","post_main_content_content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Half of chapter 14 (v. 8-17) describes the initial battles that David fought with the Philistines. On two occasions, David consults with God regarding the tactics that he should use when defending his monarchy from the attacks waged by this hostile nation, and receives two different answers:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10 David inquired of God: Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into my hands? And the LORD answered him: \u201cGo up, and I will deliver them into your hands\u2026<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14 David inquired of God once more, and God answered: Do not go up after them, but circle around them and confront them at the baca trees. 15 And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the baca trees, then go out to battle, for God will be going in front of you to attack the Philistine forces.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why does God tell David to use two different tactics, the first a direct confrontation with the enemy, and the second, a more indirect type of ambush? If God was fighting on David\u2019s behalf, then it shouldn\u2019t matter whether or not a direct attack was to be employed by David and his troops.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his commentary to II Sam. 5:24, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malbim <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">presents two interesting theories regarding God\u2019s changing His instructions.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, after Saul failed to listen to the prophet Samuel\u2019s orders concerning the treatment of Amalek (I Sam. 15:3, 7-9, 18-9,) losing the kingship as a result (ibid. 11, 26), God was testing David\u2019s readiness to follow Divine guidance. In contrast to Saul, David fulfilled God\u2019s directives about the Philistines assiduously (II Sam. 5:20, 25; I Chron. 14:11, 16) thereby demonstrating his fitness to be king of God\u2019s people.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secondly, God was teaching David not to rely on his personal might and acumen as a warrior, and instead to defer to God\u2019s wisdom. Consequently, David responsibly inquired how he was to attack the Philistines, rather than devise a plan and execute it by himself.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malbim<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s first explanation focuses upon David\u2019s functioning as a king of Israel, fully beholden to God (see Lev. 25:42, 55.)\u00a0 The second interpretation could apply to all worshipers of God. They are expected to defer responsibility for actions, particularly when others are depending upon them, only to God. While the individual certainly can weigh in with an opinion based upon past experience, there is an expectation that a worshipper of God not make a move without first receiving Divine approval.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such an expectation puts contemporary observant individuals, without direct contact with the divine, at a significant disadvantage. The first half of the chapter tells of the friendship between David and the king of Tyre. The king of Tyre provides the materials needed for David to build the city of David. The second part of the chapter talks about the Philistine threat at the start of David's reign and David's double defeat of the enemy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The issue is that these two events seem to happen at different times according to II Samuel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The war with the Philistines and the king of Tyre sending materials happens in Chapter 5 of II Samuel <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Ark is moved the first time\u05ea as opposed to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>after<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as depicted in I Chronicles. In II Samuel the entire Ark story is in one chapter. Why would the author of I Chronicles split the story?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is possible the author is trying to break up the story of the Ark to show that David was motivated to move the Ark again only after he had built the house with the help of the King of Tyre and that God blessed him with victories over the Philistines. This is different from the motivation ascribed in II Samuel, which seems to point to David wanting the blessings bestowed on the house of Obed-Edom. When the Philistines flee the first battle, they leave behind their pagan idols. What should be done with them? In 2 Sam. 5:21, \u201cThe Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David and his men carried them off.\u201d In verse 12 in our chapter, \u201cThey abandoned their gods there, and David ordered these to be burned.\u201d Perhaps this is referring to the stage after they were taken as spoils, to emphasize the message that they shouldn\u2019t be put to any use, which is as instructed in Deut 7:25. This indicates that perhaps Chronicles has norms and emphases that are different from those of the book of Samuel.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Divine success<\/em>.
