In chapter 15, the opposite seems to be the case. During the second parade with the Ark to Jerusalem David takes front and center dancing and twirling in front of the procession. As he reaches the gates of Jerusalem, Michal, daughter of Saul and David's wife, peers out of the window and is horrified at what she sees.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notice the difference in how the two books describe the event:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs the Ark of the LORD entered the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and whirling before the LORD; and she despised him for it\u2026David went home to greet his household. And Michal, daughter of Saul, came out to meet David and said, \u2018Didn\u2019t the king of Israel do himself honor today\u2014exposing himself today in the sight of the slave girls of his subjects, as one of the riffraff might expose himself!\u2019 David answered Michal, \u2018It was before the LORD who chose me instead of your father and all his family and appointed me ruler over the LORD\u2019s people Israel! I will dance before the LORD\/ and dishonor myself even more, and be low in my own<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">esteem; but among the slave girls that you speak of I will be honored.\u2019\/ so to her dying day Michal daughter of Saul had no children\u201d (II Samuel 6:16, 20-23).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs the Ark of the Covenant of the LORD arrived at the City of David, Michal, daughter of Saul, looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing, and she despised him for it.\u201d (II Chron., verse 29).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a striking difference between the two books. II Samuel provides much more context, and an additional significant interaction that does not appear in I Chronicles. David addresses the queen and takes a swipe at her father- King Saul. It seems the perfect set up to bolster the house of David over that of Saul.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the attack on the queen could be why it is removed from Chronicles. Michal was David\u2019s first love. She helped save him from her father. She stood by his side during the transition. The rest of her life is sad. She is childless and David\u2019s affair with Batsheva ends up producing the heir to the throne. In an emotional moment, David lashes out at her, but maybe he regrets what he said. The fact that this whole exchange is deleted and Michal is said to just stew in her thoughts could be an indication that he did in fact regret this interaction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span Because the Levites shirked their responsibilities?","post_main_content_content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The detailed division of labor among the Levites at the time that David brought the Ark to Jerusalem (1-24) is unparalleled in 2 Samuel, but the concluding verses that describe his personal participation (25-16:3) reprise 2 Samuel 6:12-19. Notably, however, the Chronicler omitted vs. 20-23 there, which describe the critical view of David\u2019s actions (\u201cexposing himself today in the sight of the slave-girls of his subjects, as one of the riffraff might expose himself!\u201d) leveled at him by Queen Michal (Saul\u2019s daughter) on account of which \u201cto her dying day [she] had no children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We recall from 2 Samuel 6 that the initial attempt to transfer the Ark to Jerusalem from Beit Shemesh met with catastrophic failure when God \u201cstruck [Uzzah] down in the spot\u201d (7) for his \u201cindiscretion\u201d of reaching out to prevent the Ark from sliding off the wagon in which it was being transported. In the current chapter, David makes a veiled reference to that event saying to the Levites: \u201cBecause you were not there the first time, the L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> our God burst out against us, for we did not show due regard for Him\u201d (13). As Radak explained:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You were not among us previously when we bore it from the home of Aminadab; therefore, \u201cthe Lord our God burst out against us for we did not show due regard for Him\u201d because the divine dictate was\u2014as written in the Torah\u2014that the Levites should bear it upon their shoulders (cf. Numbers 7:9).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two linguistic features of this verse are worth noting. One is the use of \u201cburst out\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paratz<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), which resonates with two earlier uses of the same verb. Balancing? Correcting?<\/em> How is David portrayed in Samuel as opposed to here in Chronicles? In Samuel, \u201cDavid whirled with all his might before the LORD;\u201d in Chronicles, he was \u201cwrapped in robes of fine linen.\u201d In Samuel, Michal sees David \u201cleaping and whirling before the LORD;\u201d In Chronicles, he was \u201cleaping and dancing.\u201d What is the difference between the two pictures, if any?
