It is possible that in context David did recite the full Psalms, but for brevity, the text only recounts portions of each. The issue with this answer is that the third psalm mentions two verses from the end.

Another possibility is David was providing the people with a preview of a prayer service. The written modern prayer service borrows heavily from Psalms but rarely contains complete chapters. This prayer of David, written in a pre-Temple time, foreshadows a post Temple universe. The first selection omits the detailed history of the Exodus story and instead focuses on the promises made from God to Abraham to Isaac and then to Jacob that the land would be theirs. It is clear that David is trying to highlight this message of the psalm by removing the later sections.

In fact, verse 13 in our chapter is slightly different from the one in Psalm 105. “O offspring of Israel, His servant, O descendants of Jacob, His chosen ones praise the LORD” (I Chronicles 16:13) as opposed to “O offspring of Abraham, His servant, O descendants of Jacob, His chosen ones. (Psalm 105:6). The shift from sons of Abraham to sons of Israel focuses the message immediately on the nation and peoplehood. It also is a way to emphasize the unity of the nation now under David.

Psalm 96 focuses on David’s musical gifts with its repeating phrases and ode to music. It highlights the young boy who grew up in the palace of Saul playing the lyre who is now king. Finally, Psalm 106 is a companion to 105 that highlights the downside of the history of the Israelites. David removes these down verses and instead focuses on the last two verses of Psalm 106 highlights the forgiveness and praise of God. The festivities have concluded, and King David has brought offerings and blessed the people. Before the party concludes however, King David does something else, that is almost stereotypically Jewish. “He distributed to all the people of Israel, to man and woman alike, a loaf of bread, a portion of meat and a flask of wine (16:3).” Was this gift merely a pekeleh (little package) of treats to take home? It seems unlikely that King David would be occupied with party favors at such an intensely momentous and spiritually significant occasion.

Immediately after reading about these gifts, we learn more details about the services conducted by the Levites and priests and the songs of praises and blessings that were offered up to God. The detailed descriptions in the chapter conclude by telling us that “all the people went back to their home and David turned to bless his own household (16:43).” Both at the beginning and end of this narrative there is a linkage between the public and private worlds. Some of the same materials used for public offerings went home with the people. Now they are taking a tangible memory of their public blessing and honoring of God home with them. Their public piety does not end when they close their front doors behind them. The same bridge from public to private behavior is demonstrated by David when he turns to his family to bless them.

The connection between the two spheres: the public worship and the private practice, reminds us that neither exist in isolation. We can’t be two people with different public and private personas. To be genuinely a person of faith requires a synergy between the two. Too often, unfortunately, we witness something different – a publicly righteous person who, behind closed doors, or engaged in business, behaves quite differently. That is not to say that human nature won’t sometimes take one in the wrong direction – as has been demonstrated by many of our biblical protagonists. King David himself struggled, sinned and repented for his own poor judgement. But perhaps the lesson of the parting gifts bestowed by David is another kind of gift altogether – a reminder to bridge the gap between our public and private personas.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/1chron16-outer-inner.jpg","1536x1536-width":841,"1536x1536-height":1209,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/1chron16-outer-inner.jpg","2048x2048-width":841,"2048x2048-height":1209
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/1chron16-outer-inner.jpg","1536x1536-width":841,"1536x1536-height":1209,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/1chron16-outer-inner.jpg","2048x2048-width":841,"2048x2048-height":1209
Yakov Azriel, who lives in Israel, has published five books of poetry in the USA and hundreds of poems in journals and magazines.
