God, however, has different plans and instructs Nathan, the prophet, to go to David and tell him that it is his son Solomon who will build the Temple. It would have been easy for David to be frustrated and angry – after all, building the Temple would have been the fulfillment of his dream, and an everlasting physical reminder of David’s greatness. Yet, after hearing Nathan’s words, the text presents us with twelve verses of David’s gratitude speech, with not a single line of complaint or apparent sadness for the “no” he had received from God.

Every one of us encounters moments of frustration and anger in life: times in which our projects are rejected, our plans are foiled, our dreams are shattered. At those times, it is very easy (and human) to focus on what has been lost, on what went wrong. It is also easy (and human) to search for someone or something we can blame for the apparent failure, whether it is circumstances, people, or God. David offers us a different model – when faced with disappointment, instead of focusing on what we do not have, on what we have not achieved, one should look back at all our successes, on what we have been able to build so far, on the many accomplishments which have brought us to where we are today and be thankful for all of it.

Our life’s journey is made of ups and downs, of moments of movement and moments of inactivity, of successes and failures, of right and wrong choices, just as David’s life was. Every step of the journey is responsible for bringing us to where we are today. Shattered dreams, as much as realized dreams, make us who we are. Pain, as much as comfort, builds understanding and resilience. It is only when we look back and see a full picture of our lives that we can see how those difficult moments helped us become stronger and better people.

Modern research in the field of Positive Psychology shows that gratitude leads to improved health, happiness, and stronger personal relationships. Thousands of years earlier, King David knew it intuitively. Let us learn from David to be grateful for our blessings not only when all is going well, but most importantly, when difficult times knock on our door.

1chron17-satisfaction positive Perhaps, writes Rabbi Ben Chaim, it has more to do with David’s recognition of his own reputation as an esteemed leader than with any blood on his hands. Historical figures of that stature get monuments built in testament of their achievements. Could David have understood God’s reference in 17:9 to his renown as a cautionary note that the Temple cannot be seen as a monument to David’s military success rather than its true purpose as a focus of religious expression? Perhaps, being a great but humble leader, rather than referring to his own status, David simply paraphrased God’s message in the self-deprecating terms of the blood on his hands.

Though that may explain the reason that David’s son, not David himself, is appointed to build the Temple, there is still the outstanding question of why God turns the request to build Him a house to the promise that He will build the nation a home. The original Tabernacle was built not because the Jewish people decided to erect it, but because God commanded them to do so and provided explicit, detailed instructions for its construction. So, it is not for the people, even one as great as King David, to decide that the Tabernacle should be replaced by a bigger and better structure. To do so would result in a mere “building”. Instead, God promises that when the time is right, He will build a home for the Jewish people, and they will be His partner in building it, just as it was with the Tabernacle.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/is1-bloody-hands.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1024,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/is1-bloody-hands.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1280
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/is1-bloody-hands.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1024,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/is1-bloody-hands.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1280
Dr. Moshe Sokolow is Associate Dean of the Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration, Yeshiva University, and teaches a weekly class in parashat hashavu`a at Lincoln Square Synagogue. The implication is that he wants to build a temple. Nathan the prophet immediately responds: “Do whatever you have in mind, for God is with you” (verse 2). Nathan gives his blessing through God that David should go ahead.

That night, however, Nathan receives different instructions. God decrees that David will not be the one building the Temple. Instead, God promises that David’s line will endure forever, and his son will build the Temple. It seems that Nathan actually spoke out of turn, giving David the ok before asking God. Nathan, though, does not seem to be punished for this, so we can assume it was an honest mistake. Malbim writes that Nathan took stock of the situation before he answered. God had promised a permanent home when Israel was free from all it’s enemies. David and Israel are, at this point, finally in a state of peace.

Nathan also observed that David had been working with an element of the divine spirit. He therefore concluded that David’s request was divinely inspired. Based on God’s message to Nathan in a dream, Nathan was not mistaken. This time, however, God was not going to allow David to build the temple. The given reason is that David was involved in warfare and was too blood-soaked. But a secondary reason can be deduced by God’s promise to establish the Davidic line forever. By allowing David’s son to build the Temple, God gives the Davidic line a monumental achievement beyond just David himself.

Most of the chapter matches II Samuel 7, except for the end of the chapter. David accepts the promise from Nathan in Chronicles as “Now, it has pleased You to bless Your servant’s house, that it abide before You forever; for You, O LORD, have blessed and are blessed forever” (I Chronicles 17:27). In II Samuel, however, is “Be pleased, therefore, to bless Your servant’s house, that it abide before You forever; for You, O Lord GOD, have spoken. May Your servant’s house be blessed forever by Your blessing.” (II Samuel 7:29). In II Samuel David’s focus is a request that God blesses his house forever. In I Chronicles, it is a blessing for God. This again could be a slight edit to the official record to protect David. In Samuel, David’s blessing is somewhat selfish- asking God to make good on God’s promise. Chronicles fixes this by showing David’s gratitude to God.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/job32-oops-mistake.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1024,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/job32-oops-mistake.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1280
But by allowing David’s son to build the Temple, God gives the Davidic line a monumental achievement beyond just David himself
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/job32-oops-mistake.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1024,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/job32-oops-mistake.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1280
Yakov Azriel, who lives in Israel, has published five books of poetry in the USA and hundreds of poems in journals and magazines.
