All six of the outer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">branches<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were designed with \u201cthree cups shaped like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">almond-blossoms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, each with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">knobs <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">petals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d The middle branch contained four almond-blossoms also with the knobs and petals.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commentaries throughout the ages have attempted to draw descriptions of the Menorah, were the branches curved, straight or bent in the middle? Where exactly were the calyxes? The only clue, perhaps, the relief on the arch of Titus in Rome depicting the Romans carrying the menorah in the period following the destruction of the Second Temple.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the early 20<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century botanists Ephraim and Hannah Hareuveni emigrated from Russia to Israel. They believed that the plants in the Torah could be found growing in Israel, and they began collecting and classifying Biblical plants. In their searches they noticed a resemblance between the Torah\u2019s description of the Menorah (branches, calyxes, petals, and cups) and an oily plant that grows in Israel called the salvia palaestina.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their son Nogah Hareuveni writes that when the salvia is pressed it looks just like the Menorah, with three branches emerging from the central branch, and the knobs growing directly from the stem and branches.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"direction: ltr;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the description of the menorah Moses is told \u201cnote well and follow the patterns that you see on the mountain.\u201d The Talmud in tractate Menachot writes that Moses didn\u2019t understand the design of the Menorah, so God showed him a picture of it in fire. Yet, 2 Samuel 8 states: \u201cDavid captured 1,700 horsemen and 20,000 foot soldiers of his force; and David hamstrung all the chariot horses, except for 100 which he retained\u201d (4). Since the details concerning the foot soldiers are identical, it is somewhat perplexing to find a discrepancy in the number of horsemen and an outright contradiction whether he captured chariots at all.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radak explained it as follows: \u201cIt would appear that there [Samuel] he counted only the high officers in the camp of Hadarezer, while in this book he counted all the horsemen.\u201d As for hamstringing the horses, Radak reminded us that kings of Israel are warned by Torah law: \u201cMoreover, he shall not keep many horses\u201d (Deut. 17:16). However, they are permitted to keep as many horses as are required for their chariots; in this case, one hundred.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neither was David the first Israelite leader to confront this challenge: Joshua was specifically instructed to hamstring the horses (and burn the chariots) of the northern Canaanite coalition he defeated at Waters of Merom (Joshua 11:6). The Hebrew word \u201ckohen\u201d is used to describe their job. This word almost always is used in the context of a priest and priestly duties in the temple or tabernacle. The problem is that David\u2019s sons were not from the tribe of Levi and were not in the priestly class. The implication here is that they may have usurped the role of the priests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The parallel verse in chapter 18 of Chronicles helps clarify what this word means.\u00a0 \u201cBenaiah son of Jehoiada was commander of the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David\u2019s sons were first ministers of the king\u201d (verse 19). Here the word \u201ckohen\u201d is not used, but \u201chand of the king.\u201d The sons of David, therefore, may not have usurped the role of the priests, but rather may have been only his trusted First he defeats the Philistines (18:1), then the Moabites (18:2), and then Hadadezer, king of Zobah-hamath (18:3). The chapter then describes how this led to David conquering the Arameans:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnd when the Arameans of Damascus came to the aid of King Hadadezer of Zobah-hamath, David struck down 22,000 of the Arameans. David stationed [garrisons] in Aram of Damascus, and the Arameans became tributary vassals of David. The LORD gave David victory wherever he went\u201d (1 Chronicles 18:5-6).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mention of Damascus is not surprising. It is one of the oldest cities in the world, and was the main city of the Aramean people. What is noteworthy is how the name is spelled in Hebrew in these two verses. In both, it appears as <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Darmesek<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as it does in a number of other verses in the book of Chronicles. However, in the vast number of occurrences in the Bible, it is spelled as <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Damesek<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and that is how the city is called in Hebrew today.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With these two variant spellings, naturally the question came up as to what the original version was. Some say that the city was first called <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Damesek<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and later the \u201cr\u201d was added, as is found in other Hebrew words. For example, the Hebrew word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shevet<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0- \u201crod, scepter,\u201d later became <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sharvit<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in the book of Esther. This theory is supported also by the appearance of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Darmesek<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in Chronicles, one of the later books of the Bible.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, other scholars say that the spelling <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Darmesek<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0came first, but later the \u201cr\u201d sound dropped out.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both spellings allow for the possibility that the name originally was composed of two words. <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Damesek<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0may have been <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">di-meshek<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ad <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 \u201cthe one of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meshek<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Darmesek<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0could have been <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dar-meshek<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u2013 \u201cthe place of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meshek<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d The question is, what does <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meshek<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0mean?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As it happens, that word only appears one time in the entire Bible, making a definition difficult. However, that same verse also mentions Damascus:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut Abram said, \u2018O Lord GOD, what can You give me, seeing that I shall die childless, and the one in charge <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ben meshek\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of my household is Dammesek Eliezer\u2019\u201d (Genesis 15:2)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are a number of different interpretations to the phrase <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ben meshek<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the one offered here in the translation \u2013 \u201cin charge\u201d \u2013 is the most popular. It has connotations of both \u201cpossession\u201d and \u201cadministration.\u201d So some scholars suggest that Damascus was named for the commerce of the city.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meshek<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0has a number of meanings in Modern Hebrew. It can refer to a farm or a kibbutz, or \u201ceconomy\u201d \u2013 either of a household, or an entire nation. A related word, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mimshak<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in computer technology means \u201cinterface,\u201d since that is how the user administers the software.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So instead of King David administering Aram in <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Darmesek<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we use the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mimshak<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0to administer our
