Why, it is to explore, to subvert, and to spy out the land that his courtiers have come to you\u201d (verse 3).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What began as an innocent enough acknowledgment of mourning, led directly to the hiring of mercenary fighters (v. 6-7,16) and the deaths of many innocents (v. 14-5, 18.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One wonders who is most to blame for the terrible events that transpired\u2014the Ammonite advisors who recommended that what appeared harmless, was in fact a tactic intended to spy out the homeland for future Jewish conquests, or the Jews themselves who were unable to make clear their peaceful intentions, and, in retrospect, would have been better served by either not comforting the mourners at all, or doing so from afar.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accusing outsiders of reconnoitering a foreign territory in preparation for military action, was a common tactic in biblical times. Joseph, dressed as an Egyptian potentate, and therefore unrecognizable to his siblings, states regarding his brothers\u2019 intentions:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Joseph \u2026 said unto them: \u201cYe are spies; to see the nakedness of the land ye are come\u201d \u2026 And Joseph said unto them: \u201cThat is it that I spoke unto you, saying: Ye are spies\u201d (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gen. 42:9, 14<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He manipulates this bogus charge to cause his half-brothers to bring his true brother, Benjamin, to Egypt (see ibid. 15-6).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashi, in his commentary on v. 3, even attributes to these Ammonite royal advisors familiarity with Torah law, in order to make their case to Hanun:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDo you think that David honors your father\u201d<\/span><b>-<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Is it not written in their Torah (Deut. 23:7): \u201cYou shall not seek their (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-Jews\u2019<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) peace or their prosperity\u201d? Do you think that he (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is forsaking the commandment of his God and is coming to greet you, and that he sent comforters in honor of your father?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prejudice such as this inherent within Jewish law itself, while understandable\u2014various moral and theological assumptions are made concerning pagans and non-believers\u2014can serve as a source of friction between communities. While changing Divinely-given laws is a difficult proposition, non-Jewish peoples and their religions can be redefined as no longer qualifying to be treated as were biblical non-Jews of old.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An example of a rabbinic leader who did just this is R. Menachem HaMeiri (1249-1316). Radak, again, attributed the discord to alternative record-keeping, writing: \u201cThe 700 charioteers recorded in Samuel were elite charioteers and the rest were not counted. Here, he recorded all the charioteers and they numbered 7,000. There he listed 40,000 horsemen and here he listed 40,000 infantrymen and omitted the horsemen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malbim, however, took an entirely different tack in both places, confirming the accuracy of both renditions by presuming a different method of accounting. In Chapter 18 (4): \u201cDavid captured 1,000 chariots and 7,000 horsemen,\u201d as opposed to \u201c1,700 horsemen\u201d in 2 Samuel; he wrote: \u201cEzra [i.e., the Chronicler] explained that there were 1,000 charioteers and 7,000 cavalry officers, each of whom was in charge of 10 [other] horses, totaling 1,700.\u201d On the discrepancy in this chapter, he distinguished between the chariots and the charioteers: \u201cEzra clarified that every chariot was [drawn by] ten horses,\u201d so the two accountings are reconciled since 700 chariots had 7,000 horses drawing them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both biblical versions report that when Israel was trapped between enemy forces, General Joab turned the tide of the battle by seizing the initiative and launching an assault on the Arameans. He split his force in half, placing his brother Abishai in charge of the other force, and delivered a rousing call to his troops: \u201cLet us be strong and resolute for the sake of our people and the towns of our God; and the L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will do what He deems right\u201d (13). The phrase \u201cstrong and resolute\u201d echoes today in the custom observed in many synagogues to recite it at the conclusion of the reading of each of the five books of the Torah.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A closer look, however, reveals that whereas the conventional declaration today is usually pronounced <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chazak v\u2019nitchazek<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>,<\/em> Joab actually said <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chazak v\u2019nitchazak<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2 Samuel 10:12). As a result of the insult, David and Joab rout the armies of Amon and Moav.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronicles 19 adds an interesting factoid in verse 6 that does not appear in the parallel verse in II Samuel. \u201cThe Ammonites realized that they had incurred the wrath of David; so Hanun and the Ammonites sent 1,000 silver talents to hire chariots and horsemen from Aram-naharaim, Aram-maacah, and Zobah.\u201d The inclusion of the names of these cities seems like an odd fact to differentiate between the two texts. However, the names of the cities are meant to provide additional context and messaging.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The city of Aram-naharaim appears multiple times in the Tanach. The first appearance is the story of Eliezer, Abraham\u2019s servant, when he goes to find a wife for Isaac. \u201cThen the servant took ten of his master\u2019s camels and set out, taking with him all the bounty of his master; and he made his way to Aram-naharaim, to the city of Nahor\u201d (Genesis 24:10). It is also the land where Jacob returns to stay with his uncle Lavan and where he marries his four wives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later, in Deuteronomy, we learn that Balaam the prophet for the nations comes from Aram-naharaim: \u201cbecause they did not meet you with food and water on your journey after you left Egypt, and because they hired Balaam son of Beor, from Pethor of Aram-naharaim, to curse you\u201d (Deuteronomy 23:5). The city appears again during the time of the early judges.\u00a0 As part of the cyclical nature of the Israelites\u2019 relationship with God, the people sin, and he delivers them into the hands of the ruler of Aram-naharaim: \u201cThe L<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ORD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became incensed at Israel and surrendered them to King Cushan-rishathaim of Aram-naharaim; and the Israelites were subject to Cushan-rishathaim for eight years\u201d (Judges 3:8).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aram Naharaim plays an important role in the historical narrative of the Jewish people. It is both a source of highest highs- Rebecca, Rachel, Leah, and also the lowest lows- Balaam, and Amon. There is a clear cyclical relationship with this city and the Israelites. The fact that the king of Ammon goes back to this source to find allies to fight David is telling. The last time an army came from Aram-naharaim in Judges, it subjugated the people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, David flips the script and takes control of the narrative for the Israelites.
