II Samuel details the complex and difficult story between David and the married woman he sees bathing on her rooftop. The details of the story implicate David in adultery and even the murder of Bathsheba\u2019s husband.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a very difficult story to read. Could such a central figure be so flawed? The gemara in Tractate Shabbat has a clear cut answer:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRabbi Shmuel bar Na\u1e25mani said that Rabbi Yonatan said: Anyone who says that David sinned with Bathsheba is nothing other than mistaken, as it is stated: \u2018And David succeeded in all his ways; and the Lord was with him\u2019 (I Samuel 18:14). Is it possible that sin came to his hand and nevertheless the Divine Presence was with him?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an important story because Solomon, David\u2019s heir, is a descendant of Bathsheba.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, based on the omission of this story from the book of Chronicles, David did something the official chronicler wanted to remove. The story, though, is not completely missing. The first verse in the chapter mirrors that in II Samuel 11: \u201cAt the turn of the year, the season when kings go out [to battle], Joab led out the army force and devastated the land of Ammon, and then besieged Rabbah, while David remained in Jerusalem; Joab reduced Rabbah and left it in ruins\u201d (verse 1).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the commentators, David\u2019s initial sin was staying home in the palace while Joab and the armies were off fighting wars. Home alone with little to do, David\u2019s eyes wandered and led him to his illicit relationship with Bathsheba. The inclusion of this opening verse in Chronicles is a signal to the reader that the story with Bathsheba should be included here. It may be too scandalous to include in toto, but nevertheless, it is an important historical fact, and an important lesson.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judaism does not create flawless leaders. The complexity of the biblical characters, including the greatest king, provide lessons to all. He also carried off a vast amount of booty from the city.<\/p>\r\n<p>2 Samuel 21:18 ff.<\/p>\r\n<p>After this, fighting broke out again with the Philistines, at Gob; that was when Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Saph, a descendant of the Raphah.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>\r\n<p>The subjects of the missing chapters are the episodes involving David and Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11-12), the rebellion of Absalom (13-19), the attempted secession of Sheva ben Bichri (20), and the settling of an old score concerning King Saul\u2019s treatment of the Gibeonites (21).<\/p>\r\n<p>Back in Chapter 11, we noted the penchant of the Chronicler to substitute \u201cDavid\u201d for Samuel\u2019s \u201cthe king.\u201d With those alterations in mind, we can posit that the omissions here were intended to serve a similar purpose, namely, the idealization of the reign of King David from both religious and political perspectives\u2014very much in keeping with the prophecy of Ezekiel: \u201cMy servant David shall be king over them; there shall be one shepherd for all of them. And he came and besieged Rabbah. And David was sitting in Jerusalem. And Joab struck Rabbah and destroyed it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This initial clause replicates the initial clause in the story of David and Bathsheba, at 2 Samuel 11:1. Nothing could illustrate more strikingly, however, the Chronicler\u2019s revision of the portrait of David in the older narrative than what he then proceeds to omit. There is nothing here about David\u2019s seeing the beautiful Bathsheba bathing, the subsequent adultery, and his murder of Uriah. In the white space between verse 1 and verse 2, lies the story of David\u2019s sin with Bathsheba, Nathan\u2019s reproof with the allegory of the poor man\u2019s lamb, as well as the death of the first child of their union, and the birth of Solomon (2 Sam. chs. 1,2). This isn\u2019t the only \u201cblack hole\u201d in the stories of David according to Chronicles, but it is especially gaping.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The crown, and its weightiness<\/em>. The Ammonite crown is a weighty piece of booty, because in addition to the talent of gold and the precious stones (verse 2), it also signifies the submission to David\u2019s conquest.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Another solution<\/em>. 635 chapters ago, in 1 Sam. 17, we read how David killed Goliath the Philistine. 600 chapters ago (2 Sam. 21), we read how Elhanan\u00a0 ben Yaari killed Goliath. Who gets the credit?
