The angel has come to destroy, as the prior verse makes explicit, but even without that information the idea of an angel with a drawn sword is surprising.

Armed angels are rare; there are only three in the entire Bible.

The first confronts Balaam while he is on his way to curse the people of Israel, against God’s will (Numbers 22). God, faced with Balaam’s desire to earn the rewards offered by King Balak of Moab, decides, if we may imagine such a thing, to give the professional curse-monger a sense of freedom and take advantage of the situation for Israel’s benefit. The role of the angel is to ensure that Balaam fully understands the gravity of the matter.

Not long after, an armed angel greets Joshua on the other bank of Jordan River. Now I have come!... Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place where you stand is holy” (Joshua 5: 13-15). The remainder of the message was not recorded or perhaps it was never spoken. Joshua’s mandate is reconfirmed and he knows that he must keep moving ahead.

King David’s situation bridges those of Balak and Joshua. An established leader, he has succumbed to temptation and taken a census of the people. God is furious and demands that the human king choose his own punishment. David declares his great distress and preference for a punishment that comes directly from God rather than through human agency. This prompts the beginning of a terrible pestilence in which 70,000 Israelites die (vv. 13-14).

At this point, David looks up and sees the angel with a drawn sword in his hand directed against Jerusalem, clearly showing David (and the reader) that God’s chosen king and city are not exempt from punishment. Pseudo-Rashi took up the challenge, explaining: “Although this chapter is not complimentary to David, it was written here because it says at the end of the chapter that he built an altar and the Lord answered him from heaven. This is complimentary to David.”

A more usual incongruity resides in the census figures. In the end, God is angered by David’s decision, and presents David with a choice of a punishment. David selects a divine plague, hoping God will have mercy on his people. God accepts and sends a plague to afflict the Israelites. Ultimately, the angel administering the plague stops at the future location of the temple with his sword drawn.

Why include this chapter in Chronicles? The book skips over the stories of Bathsheba, Absalom’s revolt, the rape of David’s daughter, Tamar. Yet this chapter is still here! This story reveals two very important facts that the author of Chronicles must have decided were important to include, despite David’s folly.

The first is the effort of David during the plague to choose the punishment that would be potentially least destructive. Connected to that is David’s plea in verse 17: “I alone am guilty, and have caused severe harm; but these sheep, what have they done? O LORD my God, let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house, and let not Your people be plagued!’ David’s selfless acts here on behalf of his people paints him in a good light as a leader who accepts responsibility.

Finally, the story directly leads to the purchase of the site of the Temple, the central theme of the coming chapters.

The Chronicler does make a slight edit at the start of the story over II Samuel 24. The opening verse in II Samuel points to God instigating the census as an avenue to punish David and Israel: “The anger of the LORD flared up against Israel; and He incited David against them, saying, ‘Go and number Israel and Judah.’” In Chronicles, however, it is Satan that entices David. “Satan arose against Israel and incited David to number Israel” (verse 1).

It is “chutzpah” to switch God with Satan as the instigator of this plague. Radak tries to smooth over this difference by explaining that it was God that sent his messenger Satan to entice David due to the sins of Israel. Metzudat David explains that Satan here is the evil inclination. The Chronicles reading does not ascribe a reason for the plague beyond human foibles.

But does this really protect David and the people? While it is less damning than saying that the plague was a result of God’s anger at the people, it implies that this whole incident was nothing more than a mistake caused by the evil inclination. David could not have overcome II Samuel’s edict from God, but shouldn’t he have been able to overcome the evil inclination? When phrased this way, perhaps the author is actually trying to subtly reveal the contents of the missing chapter in I Chronicles. It was David’s evil inclination- to sin with Bathsheba, to blindly fail his daughter, and to give up on himself in favor of his rebellious son, that ultimately led to his downfall.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/1chron21-devil-demon-satan.png","1536x1536-width":1188,"1536x1536-height":1280,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/1chron21-devil-demon-satan.png","2048x2048-width":1188,"2048x2048-height":1280
Seriously?
