David\u2019s final message here is very different from II Samuel. In II Samuel he spends his last words with his son Solomon mostly revealing a Godfather-like list of unfinished business. Solomon is instructed to take care of those that harmed David throughout his life and protect those that saved him. There it is all personal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Here, in I Chronicles, there is no mention of David\u2019s instructions. Instead there are several chapters detailing the preparations David made for building the Temple. These chapters do not appear at all in II Samuel; reading I Kings, it sounds like Solomon was solely responsible for building the Temple. Reading I Chronicles, it sounds like David essentially did everything except actually placing bricks and mortar together. I Chronicles wants the reader to know that even though David was told he could not build the Temple, he did everything he could to prepare.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We also learn the reason that David is not allowed to build the Temple, that he was a man of war, who has \u201cshed much blood and fought great battles.\u201d Earlier, Nathan the prophet never actually tells David why he cannot build the Temple, nor do we see this reason in II Samuel. The reason that is given in II Samuel 7 is essentially the same as I Chronicles 17, verses 4-14. No mention of blood or war or any reason why David should not build the temple, only that God is saving this prize for his son as a way for his son to establish the Davidic dynasty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

One may ask, does David interpret Nathan\u2019s message to mean that he is forbidden to build the Temple because he killed too many people, or is this what Nathan told him, but it is not recorded? Because this fact is revealed here in Chronicles, one can assume its inclusion here is to help make David look better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But the reason Nathan gave does not harm David. It actually is a very good reason: God wants to help establish the Davidic line. Maybe this is nothing more than David trying to make sense of why God would not want him to complete the mission and build the Temple. These last few chapters are so focused on David setting up the Temple project that he must have needed a more concrete reason in his mind as to why this was all denied to him.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

While this chapter has no counterpart in Samuel, its subject\u2014the material and personnel preparations David made for the construction of the Temple\u2014is anticipated there, albeit without the wealth of detail provided here.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

1 Chronicles 22:9-10<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But you will have a son who will be a man at rest, for I will give him rest from all his enemies on all sides; Solomon will be his name and I shall confer peace and quiet on Israel in his time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

He will build a House for My name; he shall be a son to Me and I to him a father, and I will establish his throne of kingship over Israel forever.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n

2 Samuel 7:12-13<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When your days are done and you lie with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own issue, and I will establish his kingship.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish his royal throne forever.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n<\/span>In his instructions to Solomon, David maintained that God had told him: \u201cYou have shed much blood and fought great battles; you shall not build a House for My name, for you have shed much blood on the earth in My sight\u201d (8). Noting that no such allegation was levelled against him in Samuel, Radak explained:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We have not found that God told him this, rather David thought it about himself that this is why God prevented him from building the Temple. Or [perhaps], Nathan the prophet told him this despite it not being recorded in the Book of Samuel, since this happens frequently\u2026<\/span><\/p>\r\n

By \u201cYou have shed much blood on the earth,\u201d innocent blood is intended such as the blood of Uriah [the Hittite] or the blood of the priests [of Nob] whose [deaths] he caused, or even the blood of gentile nations who had not waged war against him and among whom there may have been good and righteous people. Despite these [possible infractions], he was not punished on their account because it was his intention to eliminate the wicked lest they attack Israel or to rescue his followers as in the case of his sojourn amongst the Philistines.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

During 1993 he was Visiting Associate Professor at Yale University, and during 1996 he was the Stroum Professor of Jewish Studies and Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Washington in Seattle. During 2005, Bregman served as the Harry Starr Fellow in Judaica at Harvard University and was awarded a Teaching Fellowship at the Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. He also has served as Forchheimer Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Humanities at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He is the author of The Tanhuma-Yelammedenu Literature: Studies in the Evolution of the Versions (Gorgias Press, 2003). In 2006, Bregman was appointed the Herman and Zelda Bernard Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, where he also headed the program in Jewish Studies, until 2013. Bregman retired from UNCG as of July 31, 2017. Our<\/span> chapter<\/span><\/a> relates how King David proclaimed that the First Temple and its sacrificial altar should be built in Jerusalem: \u201cHere will be the House of the Lord and here the altar of burnt offerings for Israel\u201d (<\/span>verse 1<\/span><\/a>). Our chapter continues with the elderly king\u2019s thinking: \u201c\u2019My son Solomon is an untried youth, and the House to be built for the Lord is to be made exceedingly great to win fame and glory throughout all the lands. Let me then lay aside material for him\u2019. So, David laid aside much material before he died\u201d (<\/span>verse 5<\/span><\/a>). Then, David charges Solomon to build the Temple (<\/span>verse 6<\/span><\/a>), explaining that he had planned to be the one to build the Temple (<\/span>verse 7<\/span><\/a>). But God told him: \u201cYou shall not build a House for My name, for you have shed much blood on the earth in My sight. But you will have a son...<\/span>Shelomoh<\/span><\/em> will be his name and I shall confer <\/span>Shalom<\/em> <\/span>(i.e. \u201cpeace\u201d) and quiet on Israel in his time. He will build a House for My name\u2019 (<\/span>verses 8-11<\/span><\/a>, see<\/span> I Kings 8:18-21<\/span><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Note that<\/span> earlier in the Biblical narrative<\/span><\/a>, King David, living in a palace of precious cedarwood, suggests building a similar cedarwood dwelling for God. He is first informed by Nathan the Prophet, that it has been revealed to him by God: \u201c\u2026As I moved about wherever the Israelites went, did I ever reproach any of the tribal leaders\u2026, \u2018Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?\u2019\u201d But nevertheless, Nathan subsequently<\/span> tells David<\/span><\/a>: \u201cThe Lord declares to you that He, the Lord, will establish a house for you. When your days are done and you lie with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, one of your own issue, and I will establish his kingship. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish his royal throne forever\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

On the basis of these and other Biblical texts,<\/span> Rambam (Maimonides)<\/span><\/a> rules that it is a positive obligation to build a house for God where offerings may be brought and to make pilgrimage to it three times a year, as it<\/span> says<\/span><\/a>: \u201cAnd let them make Me a sanctuary\u201d\u2026 As soon as the Temple was built in Jerusalem, it was prohibited to build a sanctuary for the Lord or to offer a sacrifice in any other place. Only the Temple in Jerusalem, on Mount Moriah, was intended for all generations, as David said (<\/span>I Chronicles 22:1<\/span><\/a>), \u2018Here will be the House of the Lord and here the altar of burnt offerings for Israel.\u2019 For as God<\/span> says<\/span><\/a>: \u201cThis is my resting-place for all time. Here I will dwell, for I desire it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

22:8 \u201cBut the word of the LORD came to me, saying, \u2018Blood in abundance you have shed, and you fought great battles. You shall not build a house for My name, for you have shed much blood on the earth before me.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This is the solution to a quandary that the Chronicler confronts: if David is the great exemplary founder of the everlasting dynasty, why did he not build the Temple? In order to establish his kingdom, he has to shed blood, and not he but his son, a man of peace, will build the Temple.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. Comp. lit.<\/em> 1 Kings 5 tells of the preparations for the building of the Temple, where Solomon is more personally involved. And there are other differences. It is worth comparing David\u2019s speech to Solomon in verses 7-9 to David\u2019s deathbed testament to Solomon in 1 Kings 2. Precisely because they are so vastly different.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Toolkit.<\/em> If ancient building technologies are your thing, you\u2019ll find special interest in verse 3: \u201cMuch iron for nails for the doors of the gates and for clasps did David lay aside, and so much copper it could not be weighed\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. The missing reason<\/em>. In 2 Sam 7 and also 1 Chron 17 we heard that Solomon, and not David, would build the Temple. David\u2019s words in verses 8-9 explain why. And they include an important message regarding the connection between worship and peace.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. Smooth transition<\/em>. In 2 Samuel and the beginning of the book of Kings, we read of the great dramas surrounding the inheritance of the Davidic dynasty, from within, and without. Absalom\u2019s rebellion, and that of Sheva ben Bichri, and of Adonijah. Here, in Chronicles, the crown passes seamlessly to Solomon. The struggles over succession are simply not part of the story, and God\u2019s word is clear: \u201cBut you will have a son who will be a man at rest... Solomon will be his name and I shall confer peace and quiet on Israel in his time.
