David, now the king over all of Israel, decides to bring the Ark of the Covenant up from the house of Abinadab. Along the way up, the oxen stumble and the Ark slides in the wagon. Uzzah reaches out to brace it, but God is furious that he thought the ark could fall and God strikes him down. The procession is halted at the house of Obed-Edom. God blesses the house of Obed-Edom during the three months it remains there.

There are two distinct elements missing from each of the two chapters. The first is David’s speech to the people charging them to bring the Ark up to Jerusalem. II Samuel 6 has no such speech. David simply brings his men with him to retrieve the Ark. I Chronicles 13, however, does have David’s speech:

“David said to the entire assembly of Israel, ‘If you approve, and if the LORD our God concurs, let us send far and wide to our remaining kinsmen throughout the territories of Israel, including the priests and Levites in the towns where they have pasturelands, that they should gather together to us, in order to transfer the Ark of our God to us, for throughout the days of Saul we paid no regard to it’” (verses 2-3).

This speech again fits the paradigm of Chronicles versus Samuel. David’s speech here is clearly made to show two things. The first is that the entire House of Israel follows him. He calls for his remaining kinsman through the territories to gather and bring up the Ark. The second piece is the insult to the house of Saul: “for throughout the days of Saul we paid no regard to it.” This partisan speech was either added later or was seen as too partisan for the author of the book of Samuel.

The second missing element is in II Samuel but not in I Chronicles. When the Ark is in the house of Obed-Edom God blesses the family. In II Samuel 6:12 we learn that “It was reported to King David: ‘The LORD has blessed Obed-Edom’s house and all that belongs to him because of the Ark of God.’ Thereupon David went and brought up the Ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David, amid rejoicing.” (This motivation does appear, however, in II Chronicles).

In Chapter 15 of I Chronicles, though, David simply builds a tent for the Ark in Jerusalem and resumes the procession. Perhaps the author of I Chronicles was concerned that this motivation would reflect poorly on David. In context, David must have seen the blessing as a sign that God was no longer displeased from the incident of Uzzah. However, one could also interpret it that David only cared about moving the Ark for the blessing, so it was removed.

Image: The Death Of Uzzah, by Giulio Quaglio the Younger in a medallion in Ljubljana Cathedral (1704)

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/2sam6-uzzah-baroque.jpg","1536x1536-width":1024,"1536x1536-height":946,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/2sam6-uzzah-baroque.jpg","2048x2048-width":1024,"2048x2048-height":946
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/2sam6-uzzah-baroque.jpg","1536x1536-width":1024,"1536x1536-height":946,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/2sam6-uzzah-baroque.jpg","2048x2048-width":1024,"2048x2048-height":946
Dr. Moshe Sokolow is Associate Dean of the Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration, Yeshiva University, and teaches a weekly class in parashat hashavu`a at Lincoln Square Synagogue.
