To counter the scandalmongers of that day who claimed that Nabal had fathered the child, God granted him David\u2019s facial features, whereupon he was also called <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ki-l\u2019av<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, resembling his father, David.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next are those born in Jerusalem. 2 Samuel 5 lists 11 names: \u201cShammua, Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon; Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, and Japhia; <\/span><b>Elishama<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Eliada, and <\/span><b>Eliphelet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (14-16), while our chapter lists 13: \u201cShimea, Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon, four by Bath-shua daughter of Ammiel; then Ibhar, <\/span><b>Elishama<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Eliphelet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, <\/span><b>Elishama<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Eliada, and <\/span><b>Eliphelet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014nine\u201d (5-8). The problem is the duplication in our chapter of the names Eliphelet and Elishama. The exegetical consensus here is that the original bearers of these names died young and their names were then given to two later children. As to why they are enumerated as \u201cnine\u201d when there were only seven, Pseudo-Rashi said: \u201cOut of regard for King David to indicate that he had many sons, because the entire book was written out of respect for him and his dynasty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In yet another mild name-twist, our Bath-shua is Bathsheba and her father Ammiel is 2 Samuel\u2019s Eliam (11:3). This entire chapter details the royal lineage of the house of David. This is another attempt to distinguish this book from the book of Kings. Kings (and II Samuel) tell the story of the Israelite kingdom from a third party narrative position.\u00a0 When the kingdom splits, the book can sometimes become confusing:\u00a0 jumping from the kingdom of Israel to the kingdom of Judah. Even the kings of Israel are confusing. Who is related? Who is a new dynasty, and who is king when?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The author of Chronicles directly confronts that issue by providing this index in the form of the lineage of the kings of Judah. Like the chart that appears in the back of some modern Tanach editions, this index helps guide the reader through the story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also a not-so-subtle dig at the kingdom of Israel. Unlike the messy haphazard every changing north, the kingdom of Judah all came from one man. David and his progeny provide a direct line (mostly) from father to son through all types of trials and tribulations. The list even continues into the Second Temple period, well after the northern kingdom completely disappeared.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of note also are the different spellings that appear in this list. For example, in verse 5, we read about \u201cBat Shua\u201d spelled with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>vav<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">instead of a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>bet<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as in II Samuel. Her father is also spelled as Amiel, as opposed to Aliyam in II Samuel. It is possible that certain spellings changed over time. Just look at documents written during colonial America, and one is struck by the same change in letter usage and spelling! There are some minor changes in the names, with two that are more thought provoking: Avigayil is no longer referred to as \u2018the wife of Nabal.\u201d Perhaps this is due to the fact that the incident with Nabal the Carmelite was not very flattering to David. And Solomon here is not the second son of Bathsheba \/ Batshua (the son who was born as a consolation after the son who died from the David\u2019s sinful liaison with Bathsheba - 2 Sam 12), rather the fourth.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Women are on the map<\/em>. Three of David\u2019s earlier wives bear a geographic honorific. Think about the marital alliances in the diplomatic context, and you\u2019ll get a little insight into David (verses 1-2).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Hebron and Jerusalem.<\/em> Hebron and Jerusalem are not just royal homes of residence, but two completely separate time periods in the political life of King David. In Hebron, he was king only over the tribe of Judah, whereas in Jerusalem he was king over all Israel. Why is this not stated explicitly in the chapter? It\u2019s not a coincidence - see chapters 10 and 11 below.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Zedekiah - who\u2019s son are you<\/em>? Zedekiah, the last king of Judah is known to us from the Book of Kings as the son of Josaiah. Verse 15 mentions this Zedekiah, but verse 16 mentions another Zedekiah, son of Jehoiakim, i.e., Josaiah\u2019s grandson. Which of these was the last king of Judah, according to Chronicles?
