Bob Dylan applauds the fact that \u201cthe times they are a-changin\u2019.\u201d\u00a0 In her poem \u201cChange Upon Change,\u201d Elizabeth Barrett Browning asks \u201cwhy . . . [s]hould I change less than thou?\u201d\u00a0 But the first verse of 1 Chronicles 9 exhibits a more attenuated approach to the experience of change.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

According to this verse, the residents of Judah were exiled to Babylon \u201cbecause of their trespass.\u201d\u00a0 The root of the Hebrew word for trespass \u2013 <\/span>mem<\/span>, <\/span>ayin<\/span>, <\/span>lamed<\/span><\/em> \u2013 shows up elsewhere, too. Earlier, in 5:25, we\u2019re told that the Israelite northern kingdom came to an end because of its <\/span>me\u2019ilah<\/span><\/em>, its trespass, consisting of the misdirected worship of false gods. In Numbers 5:12-13, the term refers to the actions of an unfaithful wife. And In Leviticus 5:15, <\/span>me\u2019ilah<\/em> <\/span>means misuse of sanctified objects. So in these three sources, <\/span>me\u2019ilah<\/span><\/em> has to do with altering a relationship: between a person and a holy item, between two spouses, or between a nation and the divinity to which it owes allegiance. Therefore, the Talmud tells us in <\/span>Me\u2019ilah<\/span><\/em> 18a, the biblical term <\/span>me\u2019ilah<\/span><\/em> refers to change. When a problematic change is made in a given relationship, it\u2019s called a trespass, a <\/span>me\u2019ilah<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

There\u2019s one problem, though. Our verse, 9:1, says that Judah committed <\/span>me\u2019ilah<\/span><\/em>, trespass or change, but makes no mention of any particular error that was made or relationship that was altered.\u00a0 The verse appears to blame change in general for Judah\u2019s downfall. Perhaps the author of this book just didn\u2019t like change; any change in national character or way of life would have been a trespass that warranted exile. After all, up to this point, Chronicles tells the story of the birth and early existence of the proto-Judaic people without any reference to the Torah or any other set of rules. Maybe the author wanted to assume that, rather than looking to articulated rules for guidance as to appropriate conduct, people should consider how they have always lived to determine how they should continue to live, meaning that any change could lead to catastrophe.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But our chapter contains at least one hint that change doesn\u2019t always have to be resisted.\u00a0 In verse 24, we read that the gatekeepers of the Lord\u2019s House stood on the four sides of the Temple: north, south, west, and east.\u00a0 The word used for \u201ceast\u201d is not <\/span>kedma<\/span><\/em>, <\/span><\/i>which is found, for example in 2 Chronicles 4:10.\u00a0 The root of that term for \u201ceast\u201d reminds the etymologically-inclined among us that long ago our forefathers arrived in Canaan from the east. Instead, verse 24 uses the word <\/span>mizrach<\/span><\/em>, which linguistically has to do with the rising of the sun in the east.\u00a0 Maybe we can infer that problematic change is unilluminated change, and that we needn\u2019t fear changing our inherited way of life in some way, as long as our changes are made in the full light of day and with serious attention to their root meaning and broad implications.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In this chapter of 1 Chronicles, dealing almost exclusively with Jewish genealogy, the chronicler includes in his narrative of the Levite tribe some details on their specific role in the Holy Temple. \u201cAnd some of them were in charge of the service vessels, for they would bring them in by number and take them out by number\u201d (9:28).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The 93 silver and gold vessels alluded to in the passage were securely stored each night and returned to their designated spot in the Temple each morning. These vessels were, in essence, the tools of the trade for the Levites. But we shouldn\u2019t assume that the continuous counting of the vessels was purely a safeguard because they were precious gold and silver valuables. The Levites were not fulfilling the role of Brink\u2019s Security. The value of the vessels was far more intrinsic than their material. These vessels were hewn under the direction of God and were used according to His precepts. They were intrinsically valuable as holy vessels that formed a strand of the Jewish people\u2019s connection to God. For 70 years, since their exile to Babylonia and the appropriation of the vessels by Nebuchadnezzar, that strand had been severed. Now the nation had it back.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In hospitals around the globe, as surgical procedures unfold, the surgical instruments are counted off repeatedly. They are counted when they are unpacked, during surgery and again when the surgery is completed. Not because the physical instruments themselves are so valuable, but because the surgeon knows that if one goes missing, the very life of the patient is in jeopardy.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Perhaps, similar to the surgeon\u2019s understanding of the catastrophe that can ensue from a missing instrument, the Levites knew the true value of the vessels. They must have appreciated that the loss of just one, particularly at this fragile moment in Jewish history, could jeopardize the life of the nation. For one vessel to go missing would result in the loss of one tangible way for the people to honor God. The value of the vessels was not gold or silver. Their value was in their purpose as an instrument with which to conduct daily Temple services and honor God. Lose one, and a little piece of the national Jewish soul dies.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Where these vessels are now, we really don\u2019t know. Their depiction on The Arch of Titus has led to rumors that they are in the Vatican\u00a0 (you can read<\/span> this article<\/span><\/a> on why that\u2019s unlikely.) Or are they buried deep<\/span> somewhere in the Israeli countryside<\/span><\/a>, or yet to be discovered<\/span> under the Temple Mount<\/span><\/a>, right where they belong? \u201cAll Israel was registered by genealogies; and these are in the book of the kings of Israel. And Judah was taken into exile in Babylon because of their trespass\u201d (Verse 1). Chapter 9 talks all about people that returned to Israel after the exile and ends with an exact copy of the lineage of King Saul from chapter 8.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The end of the chapter was most likely a decision by the person who placed the chapters to keep all the lineages in the same chapters, as the next begins the narrative. But the rest of the chapter provides important insight into these first nine chapters. These first nine chapters of I Chronicles are simply a list of names. There are a few interesting tidbits to be sure, but overall the chapters are bland.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Even in these bland lists of names though there are variations. Unlike the lists of lineages in the book of Genesis, these lists are very different. For example: \u201cAhaz begot Jarah, and Jarah begot Alemeth, Azmaveth, and Zimri; Zimri begot Moza\u201d(9:42), \u201cBenjamin begot Bela his first-born, Ashbel the second, Aharah the third Nohah the fourth, and Rapha the fifth\u201d (8:1-2), \u201cThe sons of Uzzi: Izrahiah. And the sons of Izrahiah: Michael, Obadiah, Joel, and Isshiah\u2014five. All of them were chiefs\u201d (7:3), \u201cOf Gershom: his son Libni, his son Jahath, his son Zimmah, his son Joah, his son Iddo, his son Zerah, his son Jeatherai\u201d (6:5-6), and \u201cNaarah bore him Ahuzam, Hepher, Temeni, and Ahashtari. These were the sons of Naarah\u201d (4:6).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Why so many styles? The introductory verse in this chapter gives the reason. All of these lineages come from different sources. The books of the kings of Israel, the books of the kings of Judah, and probably others. The author is working from various sources and cutting and pasting them into the first section of the book. While stylistically discombobulated, it does offer authenticity. Readers at the time may have been more familiar with the source texts. By keeping the styles intact, the author is maintaining that authenticity.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Our chapter opens with: \u201cAll Israel was registered by genealogies; and these are in the book of the kings of Israel. And Judah was taken into exile in Babylon because of their trespass\u201d (1). OED identifies \u201cexile\u201d as \u201c<\/span>prolonged absence from one's native country.\u201d Radak\u2019s definition (apropos of 8:6) is somewhat more evocative: \u201cAll uses of \u2018exile\u2019 (<\/span>golah<\/span><\/em>) indicate jolting (<\/span>tiltul<\/span><\/em>),\u201d a shock-inducing dislocation.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Here, we transition from the past to the author\u2019s present\u2014from the history of the First Temple to the rebuilding of the Second; from the destruction of Jerusalem and the exile of its population to the renewal of Jewish life in the Land of Israel after the proclamation of Cyrus. Indeed, the overlap with portions of Ezra-Nehemiah, oddities and differences notwithstanding, is so striking, that Malbim noted (on v.2):<\/span><\/p>\r\n

What is listed here up to v.18 duplicates Nehemiah [11:1-25], although there are numerous variations and contradiction between them in peoples\u2019 names, genealogies, numbers, and affairs, to the extent that the Sages said [Pesachim 62b] \u201cFrom Azel [8:37] to Azel [9:43], they were laden with four hundred camels worth of homilies.\u201d This is not surprising at all because in [these verses] there are [so many] oddities, surprises, and contradictions that the masters of <\/span>p\u2019shat<\/span><\/i> accumulated 400 camel loads of speculative name changes and interpreted them to reconcile them in comical ways.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In a related attempt at reconciliation, the assignment of Levitical families to specific tasks around the rebuilt Temple (\u201cgatekeepers\u201d 17 ff., \u201cin charge of vessels\u201d 29, \u201cblending compounds of spices\u201d 30, \u201ccharge of the rows of bread\u201d 32, \u201csingers\u201d 33) is introduced by a seeming anachronism: \u201cAnd Phinehas son of Eleazar was the chief officer over them in time past; the L<\/span>ORD<\/span> was with him\u201d (20). Radak, relying on a rabbinic tradition (cf. Yalkut Pinchas 1), identified Phineas with the prophet Elijah, adding:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

He lived a long life because he was still alive during the episode of the concubine at Gibeah (Judges 20:28) and that was over 300 years after the Exodus from Egypt [cf. Judges 11:26] in which he participated. The Sages expounded that the divine Presence abandoned him after he refused to void Jephthah\u2019s vow, which is why our verse states \u201cwas the chief officer in time past\u201d \u2026 Others maintain that this Phineas is not Phineas the Priest but a chief of the Levites.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Most of this chapter is devoted to listing the names of the returnees from Babylonia. But note verse 20: \u201cAnd Phinehas son of Eleazar was the chief officer over them in time past; the L<\/span>ORD<\/span> was with him.\u201d This verse raises questions with regard to the identity of the individual that the Bible is praising. Radak actually mentions four different possibilities, including theories that Phinehas was quite old. The most intriguing is the third of his explanations:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u2026Some Rabbis claim that whereas the LORD was with him during some of these times, the Divine Presence departed from him when he failed to nullify the vow undertaken by Jephthah (see Judges 11:30-40).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Ecclesiastes Rabbah 10:15 provides additional details, suggesting that Phinehas\u2019 decline, that had begun with his refusing to free Jephthah\u2019s daughter from her father\u2019s pledge (Judges 11:30-1, 34-40) culminated with the more disastrous incident of the \u201cConcubine in Gibeah\u201d (Ibid. 20:28):\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Jephthah said, \u201cI am the leader, an officer of Israel. How can I go to Phinehas?\u201d And Phinehas said, \u201cI am the High Priest, son of the High Priest. How can I go to an ignorant person?\u201d (This battle of egos is reminiscent of the disconnect between Isaiah and Chezekiah in II Kings 20 and Berachot 10a).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Due to their dispute, Jephthah\u2019s daughter spent her life in solitude, and both men were held accountable for having destroyed her. Jephthah was dismembered and buried in different places\u2026 Phinehas, what did he lose? The Divine Presence departed from him for 200 years\u2026\u00a0 Previously, the LORD was with him. In the days of Zimri (Numbers 25,) he objected, but in the days of the \u201cConcubine in Gibeah\u201d he did not object. During the days of Zimri (Num. 25:14) the LORD was with him, and he had the power to object, and he objected, and his action (<\/span>skewering the two public sinners<\/span><\/em>) served as an atonement for Israel to the extent that they were not destroyed.\u00a0 But during the days of the \u201cConcubine in Gibeah\u201d he did not have the power to object because God was not with him (<\/span>having departed from him during the Jephthah incident<\/span><\/em>,) and as a result, several thousands Jews died in their efforts to defeat the descendants of Benjamin\u2026<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Jephthah may have been an accomplished military and political leader, but when it came to religious matters, he should have readily consulted an expert. Phinehas was such an expert, but he tragically allowed his self-regard to get in his way, and when he could have properly served the Jewish people as a whole, in the conflict of the \u201cConcubine in Gibeah,\u201d he summarily begged off. As in the case of many leaders, a career that begins with boldness and courage, over time is transformed into one that is safe and self-serving.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\nA spirit that seeks You each time I close my eyes.
\r\nWhy can\u2019t I come close to You?<\/p>\r\n

I am lame.
\r\nI limp.
\r\nI drag my feet.<\/p>\r\n

But isn\u2019t everyone crippled in some way?<\/p>\r\n

I yearn to approach You,
\r\nTo come close to Your mystery,
\r\nTo be bathed in Your light,
\r\nTo turn aside Your curtain.

\r\nWhy am I outcast from Your Presence?<\/p>\r\n

My older brother, who speaks foul language and tells lewd jokes,
\r\nCan run and ascend the ramp of Your altar;
\r\nMy cousin, dimwitted, mixes oil and frankincense with fine flour as a meal-offering;
\r\nMy uncle, who loves only money, can light Your seven candles each evening;
\r\nBut not I.<\/p>\r\n

Still,
\r\nI will never give You up.
\r\nThough my feet may not race up the altar\u2019s ramp,
\r\nMy spirit soars
\r\nTo You,
\r\nI live for You.
\r\nEach dawn when I pray,

  1. End of Book 1, Part I<\/em>. The first part of the Book of Chronicles (I), with its detailed lists of lineages, is complete. This is the time to devote some thought to the question: why are these lists so important, and not just here, but also to Ezra and Nehemiah?<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Intro to Temple gates<\/em>. Verses 19-29 tell of the Levites who are responsible for the Temple gates, over \u201cthe chambers and the treasuries of the House of God,\u201d and supervision of the various vessels of worship. The first responsible adult was Phineas son of Elazar, Aaron\u2019s grandson, who we know from <\/span>parashat<\/span><\/em> Pinchas (Num. 25). The work at the gates is in shifts at four different points - \u201cEast, west, north and south,\u201d and in order to fulfill their duties, \u201cThey spent the night near the House of God; for they had to do guard duty, and they were in charge of opening it every morning\u201d (verse 27).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. Founding fathers<\/em>. \u201cDavid and Samuel the seer established them in their office of trust\u201d (verse 22). So not only King David, but also Samuel the prophet selected the gatekeepers, and perhaps also all the other Levites who served in the Temple. How do these facts connect to what we already know about their life\u2019s work? And what is the significance of this connection that Chronicles makes between king, prophet and Temple.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. Special forces<\/em>. Who \u201cblended the compound of spices\u201d? Who were \u201centrusted with making the flat cakes\u201d? And who \u201chad charge of the rows of bread, to prepare them for each sabbath\u201d?
