Chapter 12 details the various warriors in David retinue. The chapter begins with listing individual names, but continues with a listing of tribes that assisted with certain numbers of warriors. This chapter is significant as it follows the first verse in chapter 11 when \u201call of Israel\u201d came to David to anoint him king and pledge allegiance. David was able to draw support from all corners of the land and from all the tribes. In fact, verse two even makes sure the reader sees that relatives of King Saul were among David\u2019s supporters: \u201cthey were armed with the bow and could use both right hand and left hand to sling stones or shoot arrows with the bow; they were kinsmen of Saul from Benjamin\u201d (verse 2).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Another interesting tidbit comes later in the chapter in verse 33: \u201cof the Issacharites, men who knew how to interpret the signs of the times, to determine how Israel should act; their chiefs were 200, and all their kinsmen followed them.\u201d Of all the tribes listed, Issachar is the only one that does not describe a type of warrior. Issachar\u2019s reputation comes from the two blessings of Jacob and Moses. Moses\u2019s blessing in Deuteronomy 33:18 pairs Issachar and his brother Zebulon: \u201cAnd of Zebulun he said: Rejoice, O Zebulun, on your journeys, And Issachar, in your tents.\u201d Most commentators explain that this means Zebulon\u2019s commerce supported his brother\u2019s Torah study \u201cin tents.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

However, this image of Issachar as pious Torah scholars sitting in tents does not match with Jacob\u2019s blessing: \u201cIssachar is a strong-boned ass, Crouching among the sheepfolds.\u201d (Genesis 49:14). The verse in our chapter can help explain the seeming discrepancy. Issachar was the master spy and strategist. While his brother is off fighting, he sits in the tent and plans the next moves. Like any good spymaster, he is willing to hide among the sheepfold, strong-willed to stay hidden and observe the enemy. This is why David employs 200 of Issachar\u2019s tribesmen as his intelligence officers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This chapter is unusual in that it has no counterpart in the Book of Samuel.\u00a0 Chapter 11:1-9 parallels 2 Samuel 5:1-10 and 13:1 ff. parallels 2 Samuel 5:11 ff., but the details here, namely, \u201cThe following joined David at Ziklag while he was still in hiding from Saul son of Kish; these were the warriors who gave support in battle\u201d (1) are unique. Indeed, the only allusion to them previously is: \u201cAt that time Achish [king of Gath] granted him [David] Ziklag; that is how Ziklag came to belong to the kings of Judah, as is still the case\u201d (1 Samuel 27:6).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

A significant detail about these warriors, however, does ring a bell: \u201cThey were armed with the bow and could use both right hand and left hand to sling stones or shoot arrows with the bow; they were kinsmen of Saul from Benjamin\u201d (2). This resonates with the description of 700 elite Benjaminite warriors about whom we are told that they were <\/span>\u201c<\/span>lefthanded; every one could sling stones at a hair, and not miss\u201d (Judges 20:16).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In my comments on Judges 3, I elaborated on this piquant theme: Members of a tribe named, literally, \u201cright handed\u201d (<\/span>Bin-yamin<\/span><\/em>), who are notably lefthanded. I focused there on Ehud ben Gera, a left-hander, who penetrated Moabite King Eglon\u2019s security perimeter by strapping a dagger to his right side where it went undetected because people usually strapped it to their left side to be drawn by the usually superior right hand.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Here I would like to offer an insight into Issachar. The other tribes who came to David at Ziklag are described in decidedly military terms. Gad: \u201cvaliant men, fighters fit for battle\u201d (9), Manasseh: \u201cvaliant men\u201d (22), Judah: \u201cequipped with shield and spear\u201d (24), Simeon: \u201cvaliant men, fighting troops\u201d (26), and Ephraim: \u201cvaliant men, famous in their clans\u201d (30). Curiously, when it comes to Issachar, they are described as: \u201cMen who knew how to interpret the signs of the times, to determine how Israel should act\u201d (33).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Pseudo-Rashi also took this as military, commenting:<\/span> \u201cThey knew how to give counsel appropriate to the incident; David had to take counsel on how to strengthen the kingdom against the sons of Saul.\u201d Radak, however, relying on a midrashic tradition reported: \u201cThey knew how to intercalate [the solar and lunar calendars],\u201d a function assigned by tradition to the king.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The full tally of fighters comes to rather more than 300,000. David at Ziklag probably had no more than a few hundred men. The proposal of some scholars to understand <\/span>\u2018eleph <\/span><\/i>as \u201ccontingent\u201d rather than \u201cthousand\u201d is strained, both because an army could scarcely have so many contingents and because the number is introduced specifically by the word <\/span>mispar<\/span><\/i>, which means \u201ccount\u201d or \u201cnumber.\u201d The fantastically inflated figures reflect the Chronicler\u2019s desire to convey a sense that vast numbers from all parts of the nation rallied around David.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. Comp lit<\/em>. 1 Sam. 27 tells of when David was at Ziklag, under the wing of the Philistines, with the cover story that he was betraying his people. King Achish, by the way, was so sure that David was a traitor, that he wanted him as an ally in his war against Saul on the Gilboa (1 Sam. 29). What does the Chronicler do with this narrative challenge? He minimizes the story of the betrayal, mentioning it only in passing in verse 19. He writes of the Ziklag period as one of establishing ties with all Israel, that is expressed in their joining David.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Right and left<\/em>. Among the warriors of Benjamin were those who \u201cwere armed with the bow and could use both right hand and left hand to sling stones or shoot arrows with the bow\u201d (verse 2), in other words, fighters who were equally talented with both hands. This is reminiscent of another hero, of the tribe of Benjamin, whom we met 662 chapters ago, Ehud Ben Gera, the left-handed chieftain from Judges 3.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. King of everyone!<\/em> The chapter\u2019s message is crystal clear. David ascends the throne with a broad consensus among the tribes of Israel, even those who we remember from the book of Samuel as having been opposed. As stated in verse 39, \u201cAll these, fighting men, manning the battle line with whole heart, came to Hebron to make David king over all Israel.
