The entire book is written in first person, ostensibly a memoir. While reading the book, it is important to pay attention to the nuance and references used by Nehemiah to help bolster his status and story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The book opens with the perfect example of this. \u201cThe narrative of Nehemiah son of Hacaliah\u201d (verse 1). \u201cThe narrative [words] of\u201d is an interesting way to start the book. The two previous books, Ezra and Daniel, start very differently. Ezra does not even appear in the book until the very end. Daniel also only appears towards the end of the first chapter. Both of these books contain first person narrative, but neither starts with this phrase. What makes the phrase unique is that it appears over and over and over again in the book of Kings (cf. I Kings 11:14, I Kings 14:9, I Kings 14:29, I Kings 15:7, et al.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In each of the instances the phrase appears at the end of a king\u2019s life. \u201cThe other narratives of [King X\u2019s] reign and all his actions are recorded in the Annals of the Kings of [Judah or Israel]\" and then sometimes one or two quick facts about the king. The motivation behind the move is uncertain. It is possible that Nehemiah specifically used this phrase to start the book in order to elevate his status to that of a king of Judah, or to generally demonstrate authority.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He wants to make sure that the reader understands that despite the fact that he was in Shushan and had not yet returned to Jerusalem, he was still connected to the people there. \u201cHanani, one of my brothers, together with some men of Judah, arrived\u201d (verse 2). Hanani was not related, yet Nehemiah presents himself as a brother to this representative of the Jews of Jerusalem. Nehemiah rips his clothes and calls out a beautiful prayer to God asking for forgiveness for the people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the very end of the chapter there is a non-sequitur \u201cI was the king\u2019s cupbearer at the time\u201d (verse 11). Nehemiah could have mentioned this at the start of the book when he wrote that he was living in Shushan. It could also have been attached to the next chapter which is more of a narrative surrounding this fact. Why throw this together in the same sentence as his long prayer? Does this reveal the shame that Nehemiah felt having decided to remain in Persia? Did he anticipate the reader\u2019s suspicion as to why he was so upset about something he himself never tried to join? \"No,\" he tells the reader,\u00a0 \"I stayed behind because I had an important position in the palace!\"\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These three small details in the very first chapter help us get a picture of the personality of the main character, whether intentional or not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image: Nehemiah, Church of St. Lazare, in Avallon, central France. We assume that it is the same year, \u201cthe twentieth year of King Artaxerxes,\u201d with which chapter two begins. This assumption was shared by Malbim, who began his commentary to the book as follows:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe twentieth year: To [the reign] of Artaxerxes, who was introduced in the Book of Ezra. This clarifies that this book follows upon that of Ezra, which precedes it. As the Sages wrote in Sanhedrin (93b): \u201cThe entire subject matter of Ezra was narrated by Nehemiah,\u201d which is why they count as only one book among the [canonical] twenty-four. Otherwise, [Nehemiah] would have had to specify [the reign of] Artaxerxes.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nehemiah was visited by some kinsmen and countrymen from Judea bearing the mournful news that \u201cthe survivors who have survived the captivity there in the province are in dire trouble and disgrace; Jerusalem\u2019s wall is full of breaches, and its gates have been destroyed by fire\u201d (3). Nehemiah resolved to assist them. Paraphrasing Deut. 30:4-5: \u201cEven if your outcasts are at the ends of the world,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from there the LORD your God will gather you, from there He will fetch you. And the LORD your God will bring you to the land that your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it,\u201d he began by addressing a prayer to God invoking that divine promise: \u201cIf you turn back to Me, faithfully keep My commandments, even if your dispersed are at the ends of the earth, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place where I have chosen to establish My name\u201d (9).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Daniel and Ezra before him, Nehemiah translated his position at the Persian court into a royal authorization to assist the clarification of the fortress of Shushan\r\n\r\n","post_main_content_content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the opening verse of the first chapter of his book, Nehemiah says that he was in <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shushan habira<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Shushan was the capital of the Persian empire, and in Hebrew today, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bira<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0means \u201ccapital (city).\u201d So why do the recent English translations render the word as \u201cfortress\u201d or \u201ccitadel\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, the word, borrowed into Hebrew from Akkadian, originally meant fortress. Another example of this usage can be found in the next chapter of the book, when Nehemiah asks the king for supplies for his trip to Jerusalem: \u201ctimber for roofing the gatehouses of the temple fortress (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bira<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and the city walls and for the house I shall occupy.\u201d (Nehemiah 2:8). In this verse, the word is clearly referring to a building, not the entire city.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The phrase <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shushan habira<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is perhaps even more familiar to use from its frequent use in the book of Esther. In that book, there are times where that phrase is used, but in other cases, there is mention of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ha\u2019ir Shushan<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u2013 \u201cthe City of Shushan.\u201d They aren\u2019t synonyms, because in some verses (Esther 3:15, 8:14-15), both phrases are used.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once we understand that <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bira<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0meant \u201cfortress\u201d and was distinct from the City of Shushan, some passages in Esther become more clear.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, in Esther 1:5 it says that the king made a banquet in his garden for everyone who lived in <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shushan HaBira<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If it referred to the entire city, it would be hard to understand how thousands of people could fit in his garden. But if it was only for those who lived in the king's fortress, it is a reasonable (although still impressive) number.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, in Esther 9:6, it says that the Jews killed 500 men in <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shushan habira<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But in Esther 9:15 it describes how after receiving permission from the king, the Jews killed 300 people in the city of Shushan. This indicates two different incidents.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So if <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bira<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0doesn\u2019t mean \u201ccity\u201d, why does it mean \u201ccapital city\u201d today? It is not clear exactly when the practice began, but already in medieval Jewish books we find references to capital cities such as Prague, Amsterdam, and Venice with the title <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">habira<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It seems that at some point, people didn\u2019t realize that there was a difference between <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ha\u2019Ir <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shushan<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shushan habira<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and thought that <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bira<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0was an adjective that described the city of Shushan. Nehemiah, son of Hacaliah, is the central figure who dominates this book. The opening chapter tells of his position in Shushan, as the king\u2019s cupbearer (v. 11). Which king? Artaxerxes, who reigned from 465-425 BCE. The king\u2019s cupbearer is a senior, very trusted position, since poisoning the king was the easiest way to get rid of a ruler. Does this position help Nehemiah, and those returning to Zion? Stay tuned.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Dear Diary<\/em>. Large chunks of Nehemiah seem to be taken from his own experience. It\u2019s more of a public-political diary, than a personal one, but Nehemiah\u2019s own personality and perspective on the period are very present.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>What\u2019s going on in Jerusalem<\/em>? The year is the 20th of Artaxerxes. Why is the situation of the residents of Jerusalem so bad? Who took some of them into captivity? Who destroyed the wall and burned the gates? Remember the accusatory letter sent to the king in Ezra ch. 4 by the Samaritans, as a result of which the building of the wall was stopped\u00a0 - by force.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Echoes of earlier books<\/em>. Especially Solomon\u2019s prayer from I Kings 8.
