Although he destroyed Jerusalem, we read that \u201cThe Lord delivered King Jehoiakim of Judah into his power\u201d (1:2) and he later recognizes God after Daniel interprets his dream: \u201cTruly your God must be the God of gods and Lord of kings and the revealer of mysteries to have enabled you to reveal this mystery\u201d (2:47).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in chapter 3, the king\u2019s arrogance and vanity led to the most severe of sins \u2013 idolatry: \u201cKing Nebuchadnezzar made a statue of gold sixty cubits high and six cubits broad\u201d (3:1).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He insisted that everyone worship the statue, and to indicate the time to bow down to it, the following instructions were provided:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, zither, lyre, psaltery, bagpipe, and all other types of instruments, to fall down and worship the statue of gold that King Nebuchadnezzar has set up\u201d (3:5).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there is much debate among the commentators about the identity of these musical instruments, many of their names will look familiar to us today.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word translated as \u201cpipe\u201d is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mashrokita<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in the original Aramaic. It was a wind instrument, and the word in modern Hebrew for \u201cwhistle,\u201d <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mashrokit<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, comes from this verse.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next word in the verse is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">katros<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(or <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kitras<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), rendered here as \u201czither.\u201d It apparently is a stringed instrument, and derives from the Greek <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kithara<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which also gave us the words \"guitar\" and \"zither.\u201d If we go back earlier, the Greeks got it from the Persians, from where we get another instrument name: \"sitar.\"<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another familiar word, translated here as \u201cpsaltery,\u201d is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psanterin<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To today\u2019s speakers of Hebrew, that will look very similar to their word for \u201cpiano\u201d \u2013 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psanter<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And while both words are certainly related, they derive from a Greek word, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psalterion<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was a kind of harp, not a piano. (The related word \u201cpsalm\u201d meant a song sung to a harp.) So how did it come to mean piano? Some ancient and modern commentaries say that despite the Greek etymology, the instrument described here was more like a \u201cdulcimer,\u201d which was a stringed instrument, but where the strings were beaten, instead of plucked like a harp. That seems much more like a piano, and perhaps influenced the later usage.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lastly, we have the word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sumponia<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is translated here as \u201cbagpipe.\u201d While there are opinions in the commentaries that this was a wind instrument (perhaps like the bagpipe), its origin points to a different meaning. It likely derives from the Greek <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sumponia<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning \u201ca number of instruments played together,\u201d which is the origin of the English word \u201csymphony.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Nebuchadnezzar and his statue have long faded away, it\u2019s interesting to see how some of the words used then are still around today.<\/span><\/p>","post_main_content_image":{"id":97708,"alt":"","title":"dan3-ancient The Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar, took the cream of the crop from Jerusalem and relocated them in his own kingdom. In their early days of exile, the attempt to assimilate the Jewish nation takes several forms. In 1:4 we are told that these newly acquired Israelites were taught to read, write and speak the language of their captors. They were expected to eat the king\u2019s food and were \u201ceducated\u201d (or indoctrinated) for three years after which they were expected to enter the king\u2019s service (1:5). And finally, their Jewish names were changed to Babylonian names (1:7).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The attempt to culturally assimilate the Jewish nation was unsuccessful, at least with respect to Daniel, the leader of the Jewish diaspora in Babylonia. Chapter 1 details Daniel\u2019s resistance to accepting the food of the Babylonians, specifically the food from the king\u2019s own table. Through a clever test, Daniel convinced his captors that allowing him to continue eating his own food was advantageous to the crown, and he was permitted to adhere to his own dietary cultural standards. From Chapter 3, we can presume that the Jews, along with other groups, maintained their language while in Babylonian exile, because of the repetitive use of the phrase \u201cnations of every language\u201d in the text when referring to all the peoples of Babylonia.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the attempt to culturally assimilate the Jews proving unsuccessful, Nebuchadnezzar moves on to religious coercion. He builds an enormous statue of himself, orders the heads of the nations under his rule to attend its dedication, and commands all to bow down to the statue. The king\u2019s officers relate that three Jews who refuse to bow down as commanded, and the narrative of the fiery furnace unfolds. Daniel\u2019s three friends held significant national leadership positions. As Malbim points out, discrediting these leaders and making an example of them influences their followers and constitutes an attack on Judaism as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Babylonians, like the Egyptians before them and many nations since, demonstrated common tools of forced assimilation: imposing the assimilators\u2019 language, names and culture and publicly engaging in cultural and religious persecution to instill fear in a population. Chapter two mostly had references to Joseph. Now, in chapter 3, we swing back to references to Esther. Similar to Haman\u2019s edict to bow down when he passes by, King Nebuchadnezzar issues a decree that whenever a horn sounds everyone needs to bow down to the golden statue he built.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mordecai refuses to bow down to Haman. Daniel\u2019s companions Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego refuse to bow down to Nebuchadnezzar\u2019s statue. Haman uses Mordecai\u2019s refusal to bow to him as a pretext to arrange for the murder of the Jews of Persia and of Mordecai himself.\u00a0 Members of Nebuchadnezzar\u2019s court use the refusal of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego to bow down as pretext to have Nebuchadnezzar order their deaths.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the parallels between the stories stop here. Instead of preparing the gallows, Nebuchadnezzar prepares a fiery hot furnace. He declares that the three Jews be thrown into the fiery furnace. In the end, however, they are saved by a mysterious fourth being that Nebuchadnezzar sees, but no one else can. The fate of the Jewish people in the book of Esther is overturned by the machinations of Esther and Mordecai. God or some protector angel does not appear in the book at all. Instead, God is hidden.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The story in Daniel matches a midrash from the book of Genesis. The Targum Yonatan in Genesis explains that when Abram was young, he smashed the idols in his father\u2019s idol store. When his father returned, Abram claims the other idols had smashed each other. Nimrod, the ruler at the time from Assyria, brought Abram to his throne room and asked him to bow down to his idol. When Abram refused, Nimrod threw him into a fiery furnace. Abram survived the attempted execution. His brother witnesses the miracle and tries to join the winning side by jumping into the fire. But because he does not believe in God, he dies. This story of course does not appear in the text of the book of Genesis. The midrash takes the name of the place of Abram\u2019s birth - \u201cUr-Kasdim\u201d - to denote heat or light (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ur<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> meaning fire), and the fact that his brother seems to have died leaving Lot as an orphan to tell this added story.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why would the midrash pick a story connected to Daniel and Esther centuries later? The story helps create a strong image of Abram as not just the father of monotheism, but also as someone who is willing to stand up to the most powerful rulers at the time and risk death for what he believes in. Abram, although in his homeland at the time, was very much a foreigner. His faith singled him out. Not only are they unaffected (\u201cthe hair of whose heads had not been singed, whose shirts looked no different, to whom not even the odor of fire clung,\u201d 27), but it appeared to the observers on the outside that a fourth, angelic, figure appeared among them (25), whereupon the king conceded that \u201cthere is no other God who is able to save in this way\u201d (29).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>aggadah<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(legend) taught to many Jewish day school children tells the story of the patriarch Abraham\u2019s trial by fire. After being turned in to the authorities by none other than his idol-manufacturing father, Terach, he refused to recant his rejection of idolatry and was thrown into a furnace from which, of course, he emerged unscathed. Since this story has no explicit basis in the Torah text, one may wonder whether both the inspiration for it, as well as the critical details, were lifted from this chapter.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One note worthy of mention, concerns the names of the musical instruments sounding the call to bow (5), several of which are Greek. On the basis of their appearance, S.R. Driver, an important 19<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century Bible scholar (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An Introduction to the Literature of the Old Testament<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1891), wrote that \u201cthe Greek words demand, the Hebrew supports, and the Aramaic permits, a date after the conquest of Palestine by Alexander the Great (332 B.C.).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elias Bickerman, a 20<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century Jewish scholar (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four Strange Books of the Bible: Jonah, Daniel, Koheleth, Esther<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 1968), replied:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generalizing statements such as Driver\u2019s often lead people to believe that Daniel is littered with Greek words and phrases, betraying the Maccabbean culture in which it was written. This is not the case. If the basic narrative of assembling all the officials for the dedication of the statue antedates Alexander\u2019s conquest of the Near East, the elaboration concerning the musical performance at the ceremony must have been composed in the Hellenistic period. These are wind and string instruments with no percussion instruments, but it is unclear whether that reflects the actual composition of orchestras in this period. The exact identification of all the instruments is not entirely clear. What in this story matches what we know about the Persian empire? Huge statues? Check. Throwing people into fiery furnaces as a death penalty? Not recorded. Religious coercion? Likewise - unknown. According to most accounts, the subjects of the empire enjoyed a wide latitude of religious freedom, to worship as they saw fit wherever they lived.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Musical instruments.<\/em> Verse 7 presents the royal orchestra, including: \u201cthe horn, pipe, zither, lyre, psaltery, and all other types of instruments\u2026\u201d Some of these translations are guesses at best. And how did it all sound? Your guess is as good as anyone\u2019s.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Echoes of Antiochus<\/em>. In the Hellenistic court of the 3rd C. BCE, Jewish officials were obligated to accept the official line and renounce their Judaism. Later, in the year 167 BCE, in the days of Antiochus Epiphanes, during the edicts against the practice of Judaism, we encounter similar stories of the order to bow down to idols.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Where is Daniel?<\/em> Here Daniel\u2019s three friends stand accused but end up passing the test. Three chapters hence (ch. 6) we will encounter a similar story, where Daniel will be put to the test, and where he will be saved. What will he be accused with? And from what will he be saved?
