Scottish mathematician, John Napier (1550-1617), devised the system of logarithms to help in these difficult calculations. Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727) became an expert on the late Roman Empire.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Richard Henry Popkin, an American academic philosopher, writes, \u201cthe middle of the seventeenth century saw an increasingly acute expectation of apocalyptic events among both Christians and Jews and was marked by an outpouring of messianic prophecy all over Europe and the Mediterranean.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each group shared a common starting point: The dreams in the Book of Daniel<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about the five kingdoms of the world; The statue dreamt by Nebuchadnezzar and the vision of the four beasts in Chapter 7 which foretold a last reign; A stone that would destroy the multi-metal statue; and an individual who would defeat the beasts and the small horn, in Daniel\u2019s dream in Chapter 8.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In England a group of so-called \u2018fifth monarchists\u2019 were active from the end of the Second Civil War (1649) to the beginning of Stuart Restoration (1661) and created connections with the Puritan and Independent communities of New England. These Fifth Monarchists considered all earthly monarchies (and churches) to be distorted and perverted images, and, consequently, tyrannical institutions to be purged in order to prepare the ground for the rule of the Saints and Jesus.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amongst the Portuguese too were dreams of a fifth empire. Inspired by Daniel, Father Ant\u00f3nio Vieira (1608-1697), a Portuguese Jesuit Priest working in Brazil <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thought the late <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John IV of Portugal, (who died in 1656), must rise again to fulfil future Portuguese greatness promised in several prophecies.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unsurprisingly, the Book of Daniel also inspired messianic feelings amongst Jews. In 1655, Rabbi Menasseh ben Israel published Even Yekarah, \u2018The Glorious Stone\u2019 or \u2018On the Statue of Nebuchadnezzar,\u2019 referring to the stone from the dream in Chapter 2.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the book (which had illustrations from his close friend Rembrandt), Menashe writes that \u201cbecause the four Monarchies were temporal, from various princes, different nations and diverse lands\u2026it follows that also the fifth shall be of various nations and different lands, and, consequently, of the people of Israel, who possessed Judea, by divine gift\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He adds that \u201cin the very manner that the Persians destroyed the Babylonians, and conquered their lands; the Greeks, those of the Persians; the Romans, those of the Greeks\u2026thus the messiah and the people of Israel, shall be the lords of the world with temporal, terrestrial and eternal dominion, according to this infallible interpretation of Daniel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet while such messianic fever can be inspiring, it can also be catastrophic. These three stories concern Jews in exile attaining status in a foreign land. Chapter two continues this theme.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the very first verse, we have a king with sleep issues. \u201cIn the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar had a dream; his spirit was agitated, yet he was overcome by<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sleep\u201d (verse 1). We saw a similar thing in Esther chapter 6: \u201cThat night, sleep deserted the king, and he ordered the book of records, the annals, to be brought; and it was read to the king\u201d (verse 2). Likewise, with Pharaoh in Genesis 41. In fact, an almost identical Hebrew word is used to describe Nebuchadnezzar\u2019s restless sleep and Pharaoh's: \u201cNext morning, his spirit was agitated (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vatifa\u2019em<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u201d (Gen. 41:8); \u201cNebuchadnezzar had a dream; his spirit was agitated (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vatitpa\u2019em<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the dream, both Pharoah and Nebuchadnezzar call for the magicians and sorcerers to help interpret the dream. \u201cThe king ordered the magicians, exorcists, sorcerers, and Chaldeans to be summoned in order to tell the king what he had dreamed\u201d (verse 2); \u201cand he sent for all the magicians of Egypt, and all its wise men; and Pharaoh told them his dreams \u201c(Gen. 41:8).\u00a0 Ahasuerus also calls his servants following his restless night, but not to interpret a dream. Both Nebuchadnezzar and Pharaoh's servants cannot interpret the dream to their king\u2019s satisfaction. Both Joseph and Daniel are summoned before Pharaoh and Nebuchadnezzar respectively to interpret the dreams. Daniel even asks his colleagues to pray on his behalf (verse 17-18) just as Esther asks for support before going to the king.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cupbearer in the Joseph story introduces Joseph as a Hebrew: \u201cA Hebrew youth was there with us, a servant of the chief steward; and when we told him our dreams, he interpreted them for us\u201d (Gen. 41:12); and Arioch introduces Daniel as a Judan, \u201cSo Arioch rushed Daniel into the king\u2019s presence and said to him, \u2018I have found among the exiles of Judah a man who can make the meaning known to the king!\u2019\u201d(verse 25).\u00a0 Both Joseph and Daniel credit God with the ability to interpret dreams. \u201cJoseph answered Pharaoh, saying, \u201cNot I! God will see to Pharaoh\u2019s welfare\u201d(Gen. 41:16) and \u201cBut there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what is to be at the end of days. This is your dream and the vision that entered your mind in bed\u201d (verse 28). Nebuchadnezzar, like Pharaoh before him, took for granted that his dreams had extraordinary significance and, consequently, was anxious to understand them and what he presumed were their considerable implications. Pharaoh first summoned his necromancers (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chartumim<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and ordered them, unsuccessfully, to interpret the dreams (Gen. 41:24), and, when they failed, Joseph was brought into the picture. Nebuchadnezzar went even further, charging his soothsayers (called Chaldeans), just as unproductively, with a double task: First, describe the dream itself, and, second, interpret it. Small wonder that their response was: \u201cThe thing asked by the king is difficult; there is no one who can tell it to the king except the gods whose abode is not among mortals\u201d (11).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And just as Pharaoh\u2019s dreams were fraught with significance for the family of Jacob, Nebuchadnezzar\u2019s dream was judged by the sages to be fraught with consequences not for Daniel alone, but for the Jewish nation in perpetuity. Hence, we are dealing here with a double set of interpretations: of the original dream by Daniel, and of Daniel\u2019s interpretation by Jewish scholars throughout the ages. As we shall yet see (in Chapter 12), geo-political conditions and circumstances played an outsized role in the latter; for now, however, we will focus on the former.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dream was of a statue, whose consecutive body parts, top to bottom, were identified by Daniel with consecutive kingdoms that would oppress the Jews, also ranked in The four metals linked with four ages obviously correspond to the progressive decline in Hesiod\u2019s <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Works and Days<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Though it is possible that our late author actually read Hesiod (elsewhere in Daniel, Greek loanwords appear), the myth of the four ages and four kingdoms is equally attested in old Iranian literature, and it seems likely that it had some currency throughout the eastern Mediterranean and the Near East.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In its Iranian version, the first kingdom is Assyria, but Daniel substitutes Babylon because it is the empire that subdued the kingdom of Judah. The other three, then, would be Media, Persia and Greece. Aramaic<\/em>. Verse 4 is the transition point in the chapter from Hebrew to Aramaic. \"The Chaldeans spoke to the king in Aramaic, \u201c'O king, live forever! (<em>malka le'almin...)<\/em>'\" Daniel is a bilingual book. Why? That\u2019s a good question over which has been spilled much ink. Just note, that Aramaic was the official language of the empire, and therefore understandable to both Jews and non-Jews alike.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Four kingdoms<\/em>. If the model of dividing world history into four kingdoms sounds familiar, it\u2019s not a coincidence. This structure, which we will meet again in Daniel, was widely used in conceptualizing the end days, and \u201ccalculations of the end of history\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chishuvei haketz<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). And as a model for describing history in general, it can also be seen in other cultures (see e.g., Robert Alter's comments on this page).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The whole is greater<\/em>. The four kingdoms in the dream together make up the complete statue. And thus the message is formed, that despite the differences between them, all four are idolatrous kingdoms whose time has come to an end.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Remind you of anybody<\/em>? Perhaps two people? Who interprets the dreams of kings and rises to greatness? (Hint: 790 chapters ago). Who sits in the gate of the king?
