Few, if any, other books have as many lines spoken by women, and it is a rare text that gives women’s and men’s voices almost equal weight in a relationship.

Chapter three highlights both of these phenomena in the same line when the female lover exclaims, “I adjure you, O maidens of Jerusalem/By gazelles or by hinds of the field/Do not wake or rouse/Love until it please!” (3:5).

One noteworthy aspect of this verse—and similar statements appear in both chapter 2 and chapter 8 as well—is the presence of women’s oaths. When the Bible discusses women’s vows in Numbers 30, they are primarily framed in terms of whether or not men consent to them. An unmarried woman’s father has the power to annul her vow if she still lives in his household, and a husband has the power to annul his wife’s vow; only widowed and divorced women are explicitly mentioned as being able to make a vow that is binding absent a man’s consent. Oaths and vows are treated as two separate categories in rabbinic sources, but it is nevertheless striking that the Song of Songs makes frequent mention of vows for and among the “daughters of Jerusalem,” who are presumably young, unmarried women who we might expect not to have full agency over their own oaths.

Furthermore, oaths are usually taken in the name of an authoritative figure or body. Elsewhere in the Bible and in rabbinic literature, oaths often invoke God’s name (e.g. Exodus 22:10, Leviticus 19:12, Joshua 6:26). To take an oath in the name of an animal rather than by the name of God is a startling change from what we might expect elsewhere; it elevates the gazelles and hinds to the status of a court or even of divine authority. This is an expression of profound reverence for nature. The Song of Songs is a book that is full of awe and appreciation for the natural world, and for it to imagine women taking vows based on wild animals is to make a bold statement about the role that the natural world can play in our lives. It is not imagined here as a backdrop or as something less significant than human society, but as something equally capable of holiness and profundity.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/The-Natural-World-fraade.jpg","1536x1536-width":1000,"1536x1536-height":1000,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/The-Natural-World-fraade.jpg","2048x2048-width":1000,"2048x2048-height":1000
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/The-Natural-World-fraade.jpg","1536x1536-width":1000,"1536x1536-height":1000,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/The-Natural-World-fraade.jpg","2048x2048-width":1000,"2048x2048-height":1000
Binyamin Cohen is a Jewish Studies teacher at Rochelle Zell Jewish High School in Deerfield, IL. In verse 2, she looks outward, and sets out in pursuit of making those wants and needs a reality.

The root בקש, bakesh, “seek,” which appears throughout Tanakh, always carries a sense of intentionality. Whether it is Joseph seeking his brothers (Genesis 37:15-16), or Saul seeking to take David’s life (1 Samuel 19:2), the activities described by this root are not haphazard or coincidental, they describe doing. So, in verse 1, perhaps what it takes to seek the end of loneliness is the introspection to understand that loneliness. She looks around her and understands what she needs; she doesn’t just feel a feeling, she seeks a resolution to that feeling. And so, in verse 2, the woman isn’t just on the lookout for her lover, hoping he’ll pop by; she’s actively tracking him down. Seeking love is being active, both in reflecting oneself, developing awareness and understanding of one’s feelings, and in the pursuit of love, in acting on that understanding.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/is12-love.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1186,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/is12-love.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1483
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/is12-love.jpg","1536x1536-width":1536,"1536x1536-height":1186,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/is12-love.jpg","2048x2048-width":1920,"2048x2048-height":1483
Jonathan Milevsky is a graduate of Ner Israel Rabbinical College in Baltimore, MD and holds a PhD in Religious Studies from McMaster University. The reference to conception here may intimate the sexual act that the young woman has in mind. The figure of the mother often appears in Sumerian love poetry, which could be the distant background of this poem. In many cultures, it is the mother’s role to instruct her daughter about what to do in the act of love, and that may also be a reason for introducing the mother here. Notably, the biblical corpus is dotted with references to the father’s house, which is a fixed social unit, but in the Song only the mother’s house appears.

Another feature of poetic parallelism in the Bible can be observed in the other pair of nouns in this line: quite often, when a spatial term appears in the first verset, the parallel term in the second is a smaller space or an object contained within the space demarcated by the first term. She leads him, then, to the house and then, entering the house, to a chamber within it. This standard procedure of poetic parallelism here indicates a move into secluded intimacy.

From: Robert Alter, The Hebrew Bible, vol. 3: Writings, W.
