Not able to fathom why he is suffering so severely, he cries out, \u201cO that I had someone to give me a hearing; O that Shaddai would reply to my writ, Or my accuser draw up a true bill! I would carry it on my shoulder; Tie it around me for a wreath\u201d (Job 31:35-36).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His overt indictment of God is a complete departure from his and his community\u2019s belief system. Rather, he argues that he should be weighed on his own scale of justice. Job has shaken off societal expectations of faith. Instead religious truth is now to be discovered and claimed solely by his own inner authority (Gleason, 311). In wearing his writ and bearing his wounds in the painting, Job stands alone. He is searching for the wisdom that will make him whole again. Like Joseph Campbell\u2019s epic hero, he has defeated his mortal foes. Now, he faces his true enemy: an apathetic God (Gleason, 311). Perhaps the most neatly archetypal work in the Hebrew Bible, the author successfully sharpens the question of theodicy by creating a scenario in which the most righteous conceivable person (Job) is afflicted by God with the worst conceivable punishments (the loss of everything worth living for) with the flimsiest conceivable justification (God\u2019s wager with Satan). On the premise of this plotline, which \u2013 like any good Talmudic argument \u2013 creates an extreme case in order to sharpen its rhetorical edges, the monologues and dialogues within this book may address timeless theological issues in a vivid and immediate manner.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this chapter, as in many others, Job passionately and assiduously defends his own innocence, detailing all the ways in which he has adhered to accepted conventions of righteousness and justice. In this particular self-portrait, it is Job\u2019s conception of virtue that arrests our attention. Many thinkers across the history of religion, especially those who tended towards the more ascetic lifestyle, proclaimed that true virtue demands a thorough disengagement from the everyday problems and pitfalls that afflict human society. Only through cloistering oneself in a monastery or ashram may one be able to scale the heights of ethical and spiritual accomplishment. Not so Job. Following the model of the biblical Joseph, he proclaims himself to be righteous precisely because he has faced \u2013 and resisted the seductions of \u2013 the ethical perils and entanglements that accompany wealth, power, and carnal activity. Indeed, Job dressed in fine clothes, yet ensured that the impoverished were \u2018warmed by the shearings of his sheep\u2019. Indeed, Job ate hearty meals, yet always shared his burgeoning table with the hungry. Indeed, Job led a virile sexual existence, but scrupulously avoided abusing his power to foist himself upon his fellow\u2019s wives. Job is righteous precisely because he succeeded in negotiating the moral exigencies of a full earthly existence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the most famous historical figure to arrive at similar conclusions regarding virtue was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siddh\u0101rtha Gautama, better known as \u2018Buddha\u2019. This charismatic pedagogue, who built a religious following in ancient India, had experienced both extremes of self-seclusion. Having grown up in a royal palace, purposefully shielded from any kind of pain and suffering, he left it all behind to assume a life of asceticism, mendicancy, and severe self-restriction. Having experienced and rejected both of these extremes, he eventually came to the conclusion that a middle way (the Noble Eight-fold Path) that successfully balances self-indulgence and self-abnegation, was the key to living a good life. This conception of virtue, in which the challenges of life are squarely confronted and negotiated, is at once pious and humanistic, in that it affirms the possibility of living a moral life within the social spaces and limitations of God\u2019s created world. \u201cIf my feet have strayed from their course\u201d (7), \u201cMay I sow, but another reap\u201d (8).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding adultery - He reasoned to himself: Perhaps today I will gaze lustfully upon this unmarried woman and tomorrow another man will marry her. In effect, I will have gazed in a lustful way at a married woman.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Job.31.1?lang=bi&amp;p2=Midrash_Tanchuma%2C_Vayishlach.5.2&amp;lang2=bi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midrash Tanhuma Va-Yishlah 5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> connects this interpretation of our verse with the ruling in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Mishnah_Shabbat.6.1?lang=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mishnah Shabbat 6:1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that a woman may not go out on Shabbat wearing various ornaments so as not to attract the attention of men. The Midrash extends this ruling even to weekdays. For, ornaments were given to women to wear at home. See what is written about Job: \u201cI have made a covenant with my eyes. How then could I gaze upon a virgin?\u201d. See here Job\u2019s righteousness. What if Job would not gaze upon a virgin, whom a man is permitted to look at, as she is still eligible for marriage, then how much more so would Job not look at a married woman. Therefore, a woman should remain at home rather than going out in the street, lest she cause men to sin by gazing at her.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Job.31.1?lang=bi&amp;p2=Mishneh_Torah%2C_Forbidden_Intercourse.21.3&amp;lang2=bi&amp;w2=all&amp;lang3=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mishneh Torah Issurey Bi'ah 21:3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Maimonides rules more leniently, that it is permitted to look at the face of an unmarried woman and examine her features whether she is a virgin or has engaged in relations previously to see whether she is attractive in his eyes so that he may marry her. There is no prohibition here. On the contrary, it is proper to do this. One should not, however, look upon an unmarried woman in a licentious manner, for behold, Job says: \u201c\u201cI have made a covenant with my eyes. How then could I gaze upon a virgin\u201d.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Shulchan_Arukh%2C_Even_HaEzer.20.2-21.3?lang=bi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shulchan Arukh Even Ha-Ezer 20-21<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rules more strictly that a man should stay very far from women. A Jewish man is forbidden to contemplate a woman\u2019s beauty. In the marketplace, a man should run so that the woman is beside or behind him. It is forbidden to smell her perfume or to look at her hair\u2026 However, it is permissible to gaze at an unmarried woman to determine if she is attractive to decide whether to marry her. Indeed, it is fitting to do so. But a man may not look at a woman in a lustful way. For as Job said: \u201cI have made a covenant with my eyes. Job is the servant who is trying to make a case to God. For the past thirty chapters Job has been making a complaint against the Almighty about his treatment. Job asks God to model Job\u2019s behavior. Grinding in a small stone hand mill is a domestic activity regularly performed by the women in preparing food for her husband and family. Job presents in his oaths a model of relationship with the weak that is not pretentious or snobbish. It is expressed in the idea of essential equality between all people (verse 15), and also the basic solidarity: \u201cWhy, from my youth he grew up with me as though I were his father; Since I left my mother\u2019s womb I was her guide\u201d (verse 18).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Setting a high bar<\/em>. Job\u2019s oaths deal not only with the moral basics such as the prohibition on idolatry, theft and adultery, but also with \u201cextras\u201d that Job has made part of his daily life, such as \u201cI have covenanted with my eyes Not to gaze on a maiden\u201d (verse 1), or his taking care not to rejoice at the downfall of his opponents.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Tit for tat<\/em>. Not in all the oaths that Job takes does he specify what will happen \u201cif,\u201d and describe a suitable punishment for abrogation of the oath. But in the places where he does specify, we can discern the principle of \u201ctit for tat,\u201d having the punishment fit the crime.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em>Signed with an X<\/em>. That\u2019s how we can understand Job\u2019s words \u201cO that Shaddai would reply to my writ, <em>tavi<\/em><span>\u201d (verse 35). Here is the document of my oath, signed by me, submitted to God.
