Yet in Jeremiah, he is referred to as a servant of God.\u00a0 \"I am going to send for all the peoples of the north\u2014declares the LORD\u2014and for My servant, King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon...\"(Jer 25:9).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God does not mince words, this evil king is there to do his bidding. First and foremost, the very title of the book is taken from the verse quoted above (16:17). Throughout the book, Proverbs is quoted extensively \u2013 being cited at least once in close to two-thirds of the chapters. In the book's introduction, the second biblical quote in the book is from Proverbs (chapter 2). In the very last lines, summing up the essence of the book, the two closing quotes are from Proverbs as well \u2013 \"In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths smooth\" (3:6), and from 16:4 \" The LORD made everything for a purpose.\"<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In light of this, it is interesting to examine the most striking difference between the two, namely their structure.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the greatest challenges faced by the reader when learning Proverbs is the seemingly random nature of the pearls of wisdom, seemingly lacking any form of structure. Each verse seems to stand on its own, disconnected from the surrounding environment.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In contrast, Ramchal's <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Path Of The Upright <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is very meticulously and precisely structured; charting out a path from Watchfulness to Holiness based on a statement in the Talmud by Rabbi Pinchas ben Yair. Each step leads to the next and must be acquired before proceeding onwards.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What lies at the heart of this?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">King Solomon's definition of discipline is adhering to the principles of wisdom. To this end it is crucial to discover as much wisdom as possible. Every nugget must be excavated and uncovered and incorporated into the final thesis. The order with which the principles are presented is less critical.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramchal, on the other hand, charts out a very clear program which he wants the reader to follow. Although cloaked as a book of discipline and bookended with quotes from Proverbs, it is ultimately Psalms that is quoted almost twice as often inside.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramchal adopts the approach of the Psalmist, that the goal of life is Holiness and union with God after which a higher wisdom will be granted from above \"From there, he may ascend to a higher level, namely, Holy Spirit (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ruach hakodesh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), then his thinking will ascend beyond the bounds of human limits\" (Chapter 26).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He utilizes the tools of human wisdom i.e. of Proverbs, selecting very specific teachings arranged in a precise order to correctly chart out this path leading to holiness.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, Ramchal needs Proverbs and the wisdom of King Solomon, in pursuit of the higher goal of union with the divine, aspired to by King David in Psalms.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image: Wall painting of Moshe Chaim Luzzatto (aka Ramhal), at the wall of Akko's Auditorium, Israel \/ photo: 2009 - The 16<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century sage, Alsheich, responded to Proverbs 14:21-26 with a lengthy internal debate on the worthiness of learning alone vs. with others and spending time in the occupation of teaching. His arguments went something like this.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the one hand, in order to teach others, one must thoroughly understand the content themselves. Thus, the act of teaching, or preparing to teach, in and of itself increases one\u2019s knowledge. On the other hand (and this is not necessarily the belief held by the Alsheich, just part of the debate he brings forward), bright students will learn the material with or without a teacher and trying to teach unintelligent students may be a futile effort. But, the argument continues, while a wise person may claim that they can make better use of their time studying on their own, the fact is that by verbally expressing what one has learned and sharing it with others, one adds to their own clarity of understanding. And furthermore (as a possible redemption of the second unappealing argument), even the most undistinguished student has a Godly soul that thirsts for Torah and will derive some benefit from being taught. Finally, the Alsheich concludes that we must remember that we are not meant to toil in learning purely for our own sake, but in order to share and spread Torah knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Torah learners ourselves we are familiar with the common chavruta style of learning employed in <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">batei midrash <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>(<\/em>houses of Torah learning) the world over. This learning style has not gone unnoticed by academe, and a finding of the Havruta Class Research Society, cited in a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ejpbl.org\/journal\/view.php?doi=10.24313\/jpbl.2019.00143\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Problem-Based Learning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article in 2019 about the chavruta learning methodology, reported on the rate of memory formation in the brain 24 hours after studying in various ways. Two verses in this chapter accommodate that explanation. First, \u201cThe wise-hearted (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chakham lev<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is called discerning; one whose speech is pleasing gains wisdom\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(21), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and, then: \u201cThe mind of the wise man (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lev chakham<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) makes his speech effective and increases the wisdom on his lips\u201d (23).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given that the concept of the mind or, for that matter, the identification of the brain, are later than the Tanakh, it is not surprising to discover that in the ancient Near East wisdom was thought to repose in what was already recognizable as the body\u2019s most central and important organ: the heart. When the Torah calls upon us to \u201cLove and serve the Lord your God with all your <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lev<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nefesh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (Deut. 10:12; a variation on 6:5), it is appealing to our intellect and spirit. (See Proverbs 13 for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/730\/post\/92540\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our discussion of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nefesh<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.daat.ac.il\/he-il\/tanach\/iyunim\/ktuvim\/mishlay\/%d7%9e%d7%90%d7%9e%d7%a8%d7%99%d7%9d-%d7%9c%d7%a4%d7%99-%d7%a1%d7%93%d7%a8-%d7%94%d7%a4%d7%a8%d7%a7%d7%99%d7%9d\/lev-bamikra.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yehudah Eisenberg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offered into evidence two interpretations of \u201cKnow (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">v\u2019yada`ta<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) therefore this day and keep in mind (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l\u2019vavekha<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) that the Lord alone is God in heaven above and on earth below; there is no other\u201d (Deut. 4:39). On the one hand, R. Bahya ben P\u2019kudah wrote: \u201cExamine it with your intellect, comprehension, and reason in order to clarify the truth and reject falsehood (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chovot Hal\u2019vavot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>,<\/em> Introduction).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p>Nachman of Breslav broadened the interpretation:<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The essence is to know God only through perfect faith\u2026 Even though everyone knows, in general, that the Lord is God, on account of worldly preoccupations, desires, and vanities most often He is forgotten. Therefore, Scripture warns against this\u2026 \u201cKnow therefore this day\u2026\u201d because the essence of perfect knowledge is when the intellect is connected to the emotions. For a prayer to be good, one needs some help from above: <em>\u201c<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ochila la\u2019el<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hope in Almighty, I implore His Presence, I ask of Him to grant me eloquent speech, so that in the congregation of the people, I might sing of His might and utter joyful songs praising His deeds. <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The arrangements of thoughts belong to man, but [only] from God, comes eloquent speech <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(piyyut, liturgical poem for the prayer leader from the musaf service of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur)..\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Magic!<\/em> What\u2019s magic? \u201cThere is magic on the lips of the king\u201d (verse 10). What does this say about his powers and his charisma? The commentators have some interesting things to add.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Win - win<\/em>. Why should the king do justice? Not only for his subjects, because also \u201cthe throne is established by righteousness\u201d (12). Leaders take note.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>A wise person<\/em>. Who can oppose a furious ruler? A sage: \u201cThe king\u2019s wrath is a messenger of death, But a wise man can appease it\u201d (verse 14). This is what the wise woman of Tekoa did 456 chapters ago (2 Sam 14), and also the wise woman from Abel of Beit-maacah, 450 chapters ago (2 Sam. 20).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Body language<\/em>. A person who is continually evil has their own peculiar body language.
