Since that was obviously untrue, the follow-up question would ask whether he wore the tefillin of Rashi or those of Rabbeinu Tam (Rashi\u2019s grandson, which differ in the sequence of Torah portions placed on the forehead), to which the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>maskil<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">would reply: Neither; I wear the tefillin of Rashbam (another of Rashi\u2019s grandsons), which, based upon a misrepresentation of his Torah commentary, implied no tefillin at all. A figure of speech used in this chapter will enable us to clarify this rather erudite fable.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the advice provided at the outset of this chapter is the recommendation to keep the \u201ccommandments\u201d close by. \u201cBind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your mind\u201d (verse 3). The use of the verbs to bind (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">k-sh-r<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and to write (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">k-t-b<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), in combination with fingers and mind, resonates strikingly with the commandments of tefillin and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mezuzah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which employ the identical verbs and nearly the same body parts (Deut. 6:8-9, 11:18-20). Indeed, one is tempted to deduce that the practice of winding the straps of the tefillin about one\u2019s fingers\u2014 even though Deuteronomy explicitly denotes only the arm\u2014is derived from the equation with our verse.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since we have already noted (see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/718\/post\/92078\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the introduction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/722\/post\/92231\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chapter 5<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) the attribution to King Solomon of the Song of Songs along with Proverbs, note that a similar metaphor is used there: \u201cLet me be a seal upon your heart, like the seal upon your hand\u201d (Song 8:6), as well as in an earlier verse here: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bind them about your throat, write them on the tablet of your mind\u201d (3:3).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These metaphors also feature prominently in a comment by Rashbam, whose interpretation of \u201cAnd this shall serve you as a sign on your hand and as a reminder on your forehead\" (Exodus 13:9) reads as follows:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the profound <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>p\u2019shat<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(literal or contextual meaning), it [the Exodus] should be a perpetual memorial <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>as though<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it were inscribed on your hand, as in \u201cLet me be a seal upon your heart.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cmisrepresentation\u201d of his commentary is the idea that he was suggesting that the text is not to be interpreted to mandate the wearing of tefillin. What does it mean to be a sister, in particular? What does it mean to use \u201csister\u201d as a metaphor?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proverbs 7 adjures the reader to say to a personified Wisdom: You are my sister.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does the reader gain by thinking of wisdom as a sister? The plain meaning is surely the implicit close relationship between sisters. But given the brotherly conflicts throughout the Bible, from the very first pair of brothers on down, one might suggest that siblings are not a great model for drawing one near, not even in the case of Wisdom.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Might sisters be different?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One stream of interpretation found in the midrash (Shemot Rabbah, Midrash Lekah Tov, and several more, on Exodus, chapter 2) suggests yes. In the not-quite-game of searching the biblical text for sisters who are wise, the midrashim retell the account of Miriam, sister of Moses, standing watch over her little brother. The same retellings mention her role long before she watched over her brother\u2019s basket on the Nile, when she encouraged her parents to reclaim their marital bed. She had foreseen that she would have a brother who would deliver Israel from the Egyptian yoke of oppression. She is responsible for the successful bringing together of her family, and she plays protector for the child on the water.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, the story of Miriam\u2019s prophecy may answer the necessary question: if Wisdom is a sister, then, to whom is Wisdom a sister? Given Miriam\u2019s vision regarding Moses\u2019 future, it stands to reason that Wisdom and Prophecy go hand in hand, with each protecting the other while paving the way for it too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another stream of interpretation (Tanhuma, Mishpatim 6:13, and elsewhere) takes a more halakhic approach: \u201cas clear as the fact that your sister is your sister\u2026.\u201d -- that is how clear it is that she is prohibited to her brother for any kind of sexual liaison. Given the subsequent description in this chapter of how an inappropriate liaison can go awry, this simple interpretation is a great contextual understanding. And even in this example, a protective element between the two sisters is sharply in evidence.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It happens, however, that this approach has no readily available prophecy to play sister to Sister Wisdom. What it does suggest, with its eye to Jewish law, is that Wisdom\u2019s sister is Torah. \u201cAs clear as the fact that your sister is your sister\u201d -- Wisdom and Torah are thus inseparable.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But why aren\u2019t the most famous biblical sisters prominent in the rabbinic recasting of this verse? Where are Rachel and Leah?? Surely they should be prominent in the interpretation of this proverb! But no, they are essentially absent -- presumably because they are never called \u201csisters\u201d in the biblical text. The word does not appear. Perhaps this is a warning he is imparting based on his own experience courting many wives or perhaps it's a revolt against the story of his mother and King David.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In any event, this chapter offers a vivid image of the seduction that sin offers. In this image the seductress seems to be all kosher. She is alone, she claims to be following the halachic rules of ritual purity, and her house is empty.\u00a0 In truth, she is merely setting up the youth to fail.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solomon's message is that sin does not usually look like something wrong or bad at first. It has the ability to trick someone into making excuses as to why it is not a big deal or is even the right thing to do. The word for \u201cpitch-black\u201d is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018ishon<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, otherwise the apple of the eye (as in verse 2)--that is, the darkest part of the eye.
