Such considerations are offset by v. 18-9, where the author describes the relationship that ought to be had with a duly-consecrated wife.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While such challenges have concerned human beings throughout recorded history, biblical commentators understand the Bible\u2019s preoccupation with these two vectors, as representing a parable regarding the attractions of the worship of idolatry, as opposed to devoting oneself to monotheism in general, and Torah and its commandments in particular.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the book of Proverbs is considered to be part of \u201cWisdom Literature,\u201d and the prohibition against idolatry is considered one of the seven Noachide commandments, binding upon all people, the discussion in Proverbs 5 is not restricted to Jews, but relevant to all of humankind.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The preponderance of verses in Proverbs 5 that deal with prohibited behavior, parallels the Torah itself. There are twenty-two negative references to the worship of \u201cother gods\u201d in the Tanakh, and God Himself is referred to five times as \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">el kanah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (a \u201cjealous\u201d God). A biblical account where both illicit sexual behavior and idolatry dovetail, is found in Numbers 25:1-15.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two of the underlying bases for the parable equating theological malfeasance with sexual immorality, are:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A function of human nature <\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the story of Adam and Eve (Genesis 2:16-7; 3:1-6), human beings have possessed an innate rebellious streak. As Proverbs 9:17 states: \u201cStolen waters are sweet, And bread eaten furtively is tasty.\u201d (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See Proverbs 5:12-3, 23<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The nature of the worship itself <\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A tension exists between the personal sensual pleasures that idolatrous worship often entails, e.g., temple prostitution, orgiastic debauchery, human sacrifice, etc., and the stark, spiritual worship of an abstract God concerned with justice and human propriety. When a person prefers idolatry over monotheism, his\/her physical, bodily needs, overwhelm and successfully silence his\/her metaphysical priorities (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See Ibid. 11, 114, 22<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet it seems to me that Proverb\u2019s preference to critique \u201cforeign\u201d women (and gods?) in favor of more extensively explaining the benefits of traditional marriage and appropriate religious belief, is counter-productive. But in the end, she is as bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword\u201d (5:3-4). Moreover, the reader is promised to regret ignoring this good advice, should he do so: \u201c... And in the end, you roar\u2026 and say: \u2018O how I hated discipline, and heartily spurned rebuke. I did not heed my teachers\u2026. Soon I was in dire trouble\u2026\u201d (5: 11-14).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This chapter reads as a \u201cBTDT (been there, done that) so learn from my mistakes\u201d message from Solomon. According to the biblical account, the king had 700 wives and 300 concubines (I Kings 11:3), including foreign princesses (some married for political alliances, of course). If any king knew the pitfalls of bringing foreign women into his entourage, and the regret that followed, it was surely Solomon.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet the Talmud (Avodah Zarah 17a) interprets this chapter to identify an even more problematic encounter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabbi Eliezer was arrested for heresy, reviewed his own activities, and could not figure out where he had gone wrong. Eventually, with Rabbi Akiva\u2019s suggestion, he remembers that he had been pleased by some hearsay of heresy, and realizes that he was being judged stringently by the Heavenly Court.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Eliezer was in the upper marketplace of Tzipori, where he encountered Jesus\u2019 student, Ya\u2019akov of Kefar Sekhanya [the classic Vilna Shas does not have this text, for it was censored, primarily by Jews, to keep peace between Jewish and Christians; today, we have access to the full text]. He asked R. Eliezer, \u201cCan a prostitute\u2019s money fund the building of a high priest\u2019s bathroom?\u201d The question hangs briefly in the air and then Jesus\u2019 disciple quotes his teacher, saying, yes, because the money came from uncleanliness, so too it could be used to pay for something in kind, namely, the bathroom.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And what of R. Eliezer\u2019s appreciation for this insight, the enjoyment for which he was arrested as if he were guilty of heresy himself? In the Talmud, he claims that he transgressed this chapter: \u201cRemove your way far from her, and do not come near the entrance of her house\u201d (5:8), where the verse\u2019s first half refers to heresy, and the second to the ruling authority. (Another interpretation puts heresy and the ruling authority together, and the second half suggests a prostitute).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Talmud thus treats the \u201cforeign woman\u201d of this chapter as the heretical encounter with foreign religions. And if the entire chapter is read with that metaphor in mind, then it becomes an indictment of heresy, including Christianity (at least from the Talmud\u2019s vantage point, given the censored texts) and deep praise for Judaism. They bear a striking similarity to other animal similes that appear in Shir HaShirim itself, and the balance of the verse, \u201cLet her breasts satisfy you at all times; be infatuated with love of her always,\u201d likewise resonates with the imagery of that book. According to rabbinic tradition King Solomon was the author of both of these biblical books. Malbim explained that just as the doe and the mountain goat live atop mountains and are known to be fleet runners, so does wisdom come from above and move swiftly towards one who seeks it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moving somewhat further afield, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ayelet Ahavim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the title of a distinctive book, entitled in its English translation, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/yulib.yu.edu\/lib\/item?id=chamo:4085852&amp;fromLocationLink=false&amp;theme=YULIS\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wisdom of Love; Man, Woman &amp; God in Jewish Canonical Literature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (Academic Press, 2009)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">written by Rabbi Dr. Naftali Rothenberg, a lecturer in Jewish Philosophy and the community rabbi of the town of Har Adar, near Jerusalem. Its content ranges from the Platonic myth of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">androgynous<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was incorporated into the Midrash Bereishit Rabba on the verse \u201cmale and female did He create them\u201d (Gen. 1:27), to talmudic-midrashic literature, and on through the Middle Ages. His single greatest focus is on Yehudah Abrabanel, son of Don Yitzhak Abrabanel, an accomplished philosopher, physician, and poet (known to non-Jews of his time as Leone Ebreo), who was the author of the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dialoghi di Amore<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>, <\/em>the Dialogues on Love, perhaps the only study devoted to that subject by a major Jewish philosopher.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note that the word \u201cphilosophy\u201d combines both of the elements that distinguish our verse in its representation of the longing that scholars have for Torah knowledge: \u201cPhilos,\u201d in Greek, means love, and \u201cSophos\u201d is Greek for wisdom.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image: Ziva &amp; This is one of the many vivid images Solomon uses to describe the siren pulling his son to sin. A double-edged sword is extremely sharp. We first see one in the famous story of Ehud in Judges, when he fashions one to stab the corpulent king Eglon of Moab: \"So Ehud made for himself a two-edged dagger, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>gomed<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in length, which he girded on his right side under his cloak.\" (Judges 3:16).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term \"double-edged sword\" was also used by King David in Psalm 149:6- \"The praises of the Almighty [are] in their throats and [they are] a double-edged sword in their hands.\" This usage is entirely different. Here the double-edged sword is the power bestowed by praying to God. But since the spring or well is associated with the woman, it is not altogether clear what this would refer to--perhaps, by a stretch, to a prospect that the wife would become promiscuous because of her husband\u2019s infidelity, which is not entirely plausible. The line might mean, as we have proposed, that the consequences of the man\u2019s drinking from his own well--which perhaps would be his offspring--will be felt in the public realm. It\u2019ll end in tears. Don\u2019t come crying to me. Verses 11-14 shows there were Jewish parents way back when...<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Echoes of the Song of Songs. The wife of one\u2019s youth is a source of water, she is \u201cA loving doe, a graceful mountain goat.\u201d 70 chapters hence, we will meet similar images of the lovers in Song of Songs. The female lover: \u201c[You are] a garden spring, A well of fresh water\u201d (Song, 4) and \u201cMy beloved is like a gazelle Or like a young stag\u201d (Song 2).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em>What\u2019s the problem<\/em>? The woman? The sexuality? It seems not, since the wife of one\u2019s youth is presented as something very positive. The craziness that comes with infatuation? That too is only presented as negative in relation to the foreign woman, and not regarding the true love, about whom it is said: \u201cBe infatuated with love of her always\u201d (verse 19). So what\u2019s the problem? The \u201cforbidden woman.\u201d But what does that mean? Not betrothed to you? From some foreign origin (the Hebrew is <em>zara<\/em><span>, which can also be \u201cforeign\u201d)?
