One example is the conditions of the Children of Gad and the Children of Reuven (\u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t\u2019nai bnei Gad u\u2019vnei Reuven<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Mishnah, Kiddushin 3:4). The biblical text repeats the \u2018converse\u2019 of the original plan for these tribes: first, if they join the rest of the Children of Israel in conquering the land, they will inherit the area they want on the other side of the Jordan River. Then comes the flip side: if they do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>not<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">join the rest of the Children of Israel for battle, then they will not be able to lay claim on the preferred land.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solomon makes a comparable stipulation, as if to cement and secure the soundness of his excellent advice, if he does say so himself (and he does): \u201c...listen to my speech, incline your ear to my words. Do not let them depart from your eyes\u2026. They are life to those who find them\u2026\u201d (4:20-22).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s the positive. Keep the words of Proverbs in mind at all times, and they will serve you well.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then the negative follows:<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPut crooked speech away from you; keep devious talk far from you\u201d (4:24).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not enough to follow Solomon\u2019s wise words; one must also avoid twisted speech. The focus here is on the words, the messages themselves, and not the speakers or the bearers of wisdom (or crookedness per se).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the plain sense of the biblical text, the approach makes sense from a psychological standpoint. Encouraging people to do good is not always enough; sometimes, warning them away from bad is at least as essential.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From a rabbinic perspective, however, the verse is relevant to far more than is readily evident in Proverbs.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Talmud addresses the case of a man who has had a sexual relationship with a non-Jewish woman who subsequently converts to Judaism. This man is prohibited from marrying the new convert (though they are not required to divorce if they did marry).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why? The concern appears to be that the woman\u2019s conversion cannot be sincere -- she must be converting for the sake of the man! Yet the very fact that the sages bother to prohibit their marriage indicates that her conversion is valid. There is a concern, expressed by R. Nechemia, that those who convert with apparently ulterior motives are not converts at all; those conversions do not take, as far as he\u2019s concerned. But his position does not become law; and the conversions are valid.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So why can\u2019t the original couple marry, after she has converted? R. Asi answers the question using the words of the above warning: \u201cPut the twisted mouth away from yourself, and perverse lips, put far from you\u201d (Proverbs 4:24). Not all that is technically permitted is appropriate, maintains R. Asi. So, for that matter, is v.2 of the present chapter: \u201cFor I give you good instruction (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lekach<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">); do not forsake my teaching (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">torati<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u201d This is yet another affirmation of the traditional propensity to regard the \u201cwisdom\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chokhmah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) lauded so highly throughout this book as, specifically, Torah wisdom, and seemingly justifies ArtScroll\u2019s alternate rendition of \u201cMy Torah.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Hebrew for \u201cinstruction,\u201d <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lekach<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, appears in the first chapter, where it is translated as wisdom: \u201cThe wise man, hearing them, will gain more wisdom\u201d (1:5). It appears, altogether, 9 times in Tanakh, 6 in Proverbs alone. In 7:21, it is translated as \u201celoquence,\u201d a rendition that seems to be influenced by its earliest appearance as the synonymous word pair of \u201cdiscourse\u201d (<em>\u2018<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">imrati<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): \u201cMay my discourse come down as the rain, my speech distill as the dew\u201d (Deut. 32:2).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Proverbs 9:9, we find yet a third variation: \u201cInstruct a wise man, and he will grow wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will gain in learning (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lekach<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u201d 16:21 reverts to wisdom: \u201cThe wise-hearted is called discerning; One whose speech is pleasing gains wisdom,\u201d as does v.23, there: \u201cThe mind of the wise man makes his speech effective and increases the wisdom on his lips.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of these translations, however, does complete justice to the word, which, derived from the root <em>l-k-ch<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has the essential meaning of something taken; hence, our use of \u201ctakeaway\u201d in the title.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curiously, in Yiddish, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lekach<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is \u201choney cake\u201d (often served on Rosh Hashanah). This word probably derives from the German, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lebkuchen<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but one can devise a lovely \u201cmidrashic\u201d connection between <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lekach<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as Torah and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lekach<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as honey cake by pointing to the custom\u2014practiced initially among the German pietists (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hasidei Ashkenaz<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in the High Middle Ages\u2014of introducing a child to Torah study by smearing honey on his It is not a cerebral exercise but one that employs our whole being, as in \u201cHearken to my words, let them not depart from your eyes and guard them within your heart (3:20-21).\u201d Our Sages comment that merely hearing what is right and wrong is not sufficient for changing behaviour, because it is our eyes and our hearts that will lead us one way or another, not what we hear.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moses Maimonides, Rambam, provides his interpretation of what comprises wisdom in the context of character development in <em>Hilchot De\u2019Ot<\/em>. Popularly known as \u201cthe Golden Mean,\u201d Rambam advises that every character trait has two extremes, and the path of wisdom is to find the mid-point between those extremes. Finding \u201cthe straight path,\u201d says Rambam, \u201cinvolves discovering the midpoint temperament of each and every trait that man possesses: the expression of the trait that is equidistant from either of the extremes.\u201d Sometimes moving from one extreme to another is the only way to break free of ingrained habits, but Rambam cautions us to go from one extreme to another only as a means of enabling us to land in the middle.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not to suggest that King Solomon, or Rambam, were advocating for mediocrity in Torah observance, nor for taking up a position akin to \u201csitting on the fence.\u201d It is about finding balance and perhaps ensuring sustainability of character.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rabbi Yissocher Frand points out that Rambam refers to our forefather Abraham who was praised by God for teaching his children to follow the path of God by emphasizing charity and justice (Genesis 18:19). There are times when we must move away from a mid-point and be charitable without a lengthy analysis of what is just, and there are times when we may need to step back from immediate action for just such an analysis. By placing ourselves in the middle, as our starting point, we allow ourselves to be nimble enough to temporarily move towards an extreme position when it may be necessary to do so, and then come back to the middle.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That ability to shift along a continuum of character traits as necessary and be able to return to the equilibrium of a midpoint is 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe beginning of wisdom is\u2014acquire wisdom; With all your acquisitions, acquire discernment. Hug her to you and she will exalt you; She will bring you honor if you embrace her. She will adorn your head with a graceful wreath; Crown you with a glorious diadem.\u201d (Proverbs 4:7-9)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The English translation here renders the verb <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">timagenkha<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0as \u201ccrown you.\u201d However, this is not the only way to translate the root of this word, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mgn<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Others say the root here (and in Genesis 14:20 and Hosea 11:8) means \u201cto give, to deliver.\u201d Therefore, they translate the phrase as \u201cit will bestow a crown of splendor upon you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is an infrequent use of the root <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mgn<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We are more familiar with the verb meaning \u201cto protect\u201d and the noun <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magen<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0meaning \u201cshield,\u201d as in <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magen David<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u2013 \u201cthe Shield of David.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there a connection between \u201cto bestow\u201d and \u201cto protect\u201d? It appears that the meanings aren\u2019t so far apart. The English word \u201cto deliver\u201d carries both senses \u2013 it can mean \u201cto give,\u201d and it can also mean \u201cto save, to rescue.\u201d\u00a0 That could be the common meaning of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magen<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Phoenician, a sister language to Hebrew, the word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mgn<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> meant \u201cbenefactor\u201d or \u201cgodsent,\u201d indicating one who helped others. The Phoenicians, who lived in today\u2019s Lebanon, were famous as sailors and established trading posts and colonies all over the Mediterranean. The most famous of these colonies was Carthage (in today\u2019s Tunisia). The name Carthage is cognate with two Hebrew words \u2013 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kirya<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u2013 \u201ccity\u201d and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chadash<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00ad<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 \u201cnew.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Carthage, they spoke a variant of Phoenician called Punic. The names of their leaders reflect the Semitic origins of their language. Their most famous leader, the general Hannibal, has a name that is cognate with the Hebrew words <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chen<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">baal<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning \u201cmy favor is with Baal.\u201d His brother, Mago, got his name from the root we\u2019ve been discussing \u2013 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mgn<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u2013 meaning \u201cgodsent.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mago controlled the island today known as Minorca, off the Spanish coast. The capital of the Island is Mahon, and was named for Mago.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minorca is in a strategic location in the Mediterranean, and as such has been conquered by many nations. In 1756, the French captured it from the British in the Seven Years\u2019 War. To commemorate this victory, French chefs created the sauce \u201cmayonnaise\u201d \u2013 named for the port of Mahon.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most readers may not have known of a connection between <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magen<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and mayonnaise. But when we learn these new bits of information, our wisdom grows. That\u2019s the relationship with wisdom: \u201cLove her and she will protect you....Hug her to you and she will exalt you; She will bring you honor if you embrace her\u201d (verses 6-8).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Why can\u2019t the wicked get to sleep<\/em>? Not from pangs of conscience. The opposite: \u201cFor they cannot sleep unless they have done evil; Unless they make someone fall they are robbed of sleep\u201d (verse 16).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Tell me what you eat, and I\u2019ll tell you who you are<\/em>.
