They are sung by children (a different tune). And they originate here.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the \u201cpop culture\u201d aspect, as it were, of this \u201ctree of life,\u201d it is understood to be the Torah. \u201cHold fast to the tree -- that is, Torah -- and you will be happy.\u201d That\u2019s good marketing. It promotes Torah observance, offering an immediate reward, so to speak.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the original context, however, this \u201ctree of life\u201d is understood to be wisdom -- that one who internalizes Proverbs will attain. Attaining wisdom may therefore require more effort than the quick song implies, and, importantly, wisdom should bring joy -- perhaps a counterpoint to any idea of ignorance being bliss.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note that a general principle in the literature of the sages stipulates that every occurrence of the word \u201cwisdom\u201d in Proverbs means \u201cTorah.\u201d If you read the entirety of Proverbs with this replacement in mind, you would have a really different text -- a different tone, different overarching message. After all, the plain sense of the text is that \u201cwisdom\u201d means\u2026 wisdom. It does not inherently suggest the religious context of God and the commandments that \u201cTorah\u201d might be expected to imply.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond automatically inserting \u201cTorah\u201d for all instances of \u201cwisdom\u201d the midrash, as found in Avot d\u2019R. Natan (34:11), a rabbinic work of Aggadah, may reveal why this \u201ctree of life\u201d is equated with Torah.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The midrash focuses not on Torah, but on life. It lists ten (eleven, if you count a textual variant) things that are called \u201clife,\u201d with a biblical verse supporting each, including several verses mentioning a \u201ctree of life.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Divine (Jeremiah 10:10)<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Torah (Proverbs 3:18 - nice that 18 translated is \u201cchai,\u201d which means life)<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Children of Israel (Deuteronomy 4:4)<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One who is righteous (Proverbs 11:30)<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Garden of Eden (Psalms 116:9)<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A tree (as in, the Tree of Life in the Garden of Eden) (Genesis 2:9)<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Land of Israel (Ezekiel 26:20)<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jerusalem (Psalms 116:9)<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acts of kindness (Psalms 63:4)<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wisdom, returning full circle to the question of wisdom and Torah (Proverbs 13:14)<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water (Zecharia 14:8)<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First on the list? The Divine. That makes sense. Second? Torah. Also expected. Number 10, the \u201ctree of life\u201d of Proverbs 13 is interpreted as wisdom, which makes sense in context, as \u201cwisdom\u201d itself appears there in a parallel position. But why is the tree of life of Proverbs 3 understood to be Torah?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps because it provides something to hold on to -- it sustains those who grasp it. Which may be too much to expect of wisdom, from the perspective of the sages. King Solomon speaks to this from his own painful experience. It was precisely the error of succumbing to overconfidence in his own wisdom that led to King Solomon\u2019s infraction against God. While Solomon well knew the commandment concerning the accumulation of excess (1 Kings 10-11) he thought himself wise enough to be able to push the boundaries without consequence. The danger, as Solomon himself experienced, in overestimating our own understanding is that we can too easily slip from putting our trust in God to trusting only our own assessment and becoming self-serving.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet, just a few verses on, Solomon tells us, \u201cHappy is the man who finds wisdom; the man who attains understanding.\u201d It\u2019s a delicate balance to strike \u2013 strive for understanding while knowing precisely when the knowledge we have attained puts us at risk of tipping the balance from wisdom to arrogance. Rav Shimshon Raphael Hirsch provides an instructive methodology for checking ourselves. If we continually ask ourselves whether the goals we have and the means by which we aim to reach them are in keeping with God\u2019s will, then we can expect God\u2019s assistance in achieving success.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The chapter concludes with a series of \u201cdon\u2019ts\u201d including: \u201cDon\u2019t withhold good from those who need it when you have the power to give it (v.27)\u201d and \u201cDon\u2019t tell them, \u2018come back tomorrow and I\u2019ll give it to you then\u2019 (v. 28)\u201d, and essentially \u201cdon\u2019t pick fights (v. 30).\u201d What do these expressions have to do with self-awareness and the suppression of arrogance? When we believe too much in our own level of wisdom, our sensitivity to the needs of others diminishes in inverse proportion to our arrogance. If we have the means to help someone immediately, it can only be arrogance \u2013 a misplaced notion of our own self-importance \u2013 that would lead us to deny or delay. The verse they often used to validate this was <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deracheha Darchei Noam Vekol Netivoteha Shalom<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIts [the Torah\u2019s] ways are pleasant, and all its pathways are peace.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That principle was used by the first Sefardi Chief Rabbi, HaRav Benzion Uziel in several areas that touch on the lack of difference between how we should treat Jews and gentiles. Rav Isser Yehuda Unterman, Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel (1964-1972), believed the foundations of international norms could be interpreted out of this principle.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliezer Goldman, an Israeli philosopher also sought to explain how the concept is used: \u201cWe are not dealing here with a halakhic norm, or even with a moral norm deployed as if it were a halakhic norm, but with a norm whose purpose is to guide us in interpreting and applying the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">halakhah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Menachem Elon, an Orthodox Rabbi, Professor of Law and Israeli jurist the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">principle <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kol Netivoteha Shalom<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> served as a source for making law and as an interpretive principle to be applied in deciding cases. It also constituted <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>a purpose and a goal<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the entire system of Jewish law, an interpretive touchstone for the Jewish legal system as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how far can this principle be taken? Several years ago, Rabbi Avichai Ronski (IDF Chief Rabbi 2006-2010) was asked by an army medic whether it was permitted to break Shabbat in order to treat an injured terrorist. Ronski\u2019s answer \u2013 which related to all gentiles \u2013 said it <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> allowed to treat him, but solely due to the principle of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mipnei Eivah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, out of fear of the consequences if it became known that he wasn\u2019t treated. Sometimes when a person loves an \u201cidea\u201d a lot, and values it, it can be a really good feeling. But you shouldn\u2019t love all ideas. Not all ideas are good.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Son: How do I know if an idea is good or bad?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Father: Well, if it\u2019s in the Torah, it\u2019s a good idea, if it\u2019s not in the Torah, it\u2019s a bad idea.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Son: I\u2019m even more confused. Why did the author make it sound like wisdom was a very expensive woman?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Father: This is a bit awkward, but that section wasn\u2019t exactly originally from Proverbs, it was referring to an ancient Goddess of Wisdom.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Son: You\u2019ve always told me there is only one God and no goddesses!<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Father: Which is true. But other people believed that every concept had its own god and goddess. What are they?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Father: One way is telling people that the idea is bad. Which may backfire and get more people to like the idea. For the LORD will be your trust; He will keep your feet from being caught.\u201d (Proverbs 3:24-26)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d like to take a look at the word \u201csudden,\u201d in the phrase \u201csudden terror.\u201d The Hebrew word is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pitom<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The linguist Ernest Klein wrote that <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pitom<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">probably was formed from the word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peta<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The two words may not appear to be related \u2013 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pitom\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05e4\u05ea\u05d0\u05d5\u05dd <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is spelled with an <em>alef<\/em>, and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peta\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05e4\u05ea\u05e2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0ends with an <em>ayin<\/em>. But those letters do occasionally switch. While the translation of our verse in Proverbs offers \u201csudden\u201d for <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pitom<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the \u201c-m\u201d suffix means it is actually an adverb (so better \u201csuddenly fear\u201d) and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peta<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is more of an adjective. The root of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peta<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is the source of the verb <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mafti'a<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0- <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201csurprise.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those familiar with Modern Hebrew may recognize <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pitom<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0from the ubiquitous phrase <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cma pitom.\u201d<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is used to express surprise or incredulity, kind of like, \u201cWhat the heck?\u201d in English. So for example, you might ask someone, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mah pitom atah noseyah l'yapan<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0- \"Why in the world are you going to Japan!?\"\u00a0 Or if someone accused you of stepping on their foot, as a denial, you could say, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mah pitom!<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cNo way!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The literal translation of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ma pitom<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is \u201cwhat suddenly,\u201d which doesn\u2019t make sense in Hebrew (or English). This verse may be recognizable as part of the congregational hymn recited whenever a Torah scroll is returned to the Ark, as is its preceding verse, \u201cHer ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths, peaceful\u201d (17), although in the hymn their positions are reversed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may recall the primordial \u201cTree of Life\u201d from the Garden of Eden. Indeed, it may surprise you to learn that \u201ctree of life\u201d (<em>`<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eitz ha-chayim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) appears more times in Proverbs (4) than in Genesis (3) and you might surmise, correctly, that its use here was intended to call the earlier references to mind. That being the case, what is the connection between them?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wisdom that is celebrated in our chapter is, of course, the wisdom acquired through Torah study; thus it is designated the \u201ctree of life\u201d to signify its indispensability for proper living. When Adam and Eve ate from the \u201cTree of Knowledge,\u201d God banished them from Eden, lest \u201che should stretch out his hand and take also from the Tree of Life and eat and live forever\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(3:22).\u00a0 To prevent that, He \u201cstationed east of the garden of Eden the cherubim and the fiery ever-turning sword, to guard the way to the Tree of Life\u201d (24).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An ordinary sword, in the ancient near East, was sharpened on but one side and blunt on the other. (Two-sided swords were called \u201cdouble-edged,\u201d <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cherev pipiyot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as in Psalms 149:6). Therefore, an \u201cever-turning\u201d sword exposes the blade but 50% of the time; for the remaining 50%, only the blunt edge is exposed. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018<\/span><\/i><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ashrey<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> formulation, \u201chappy is the man,\u201d often marks the beginning of a textual unit, as in the Wisdom psalm (Psalm 1) that stands at the head of the canonical collection. When we find in a speech that praises wisdom an instruction to trust in God and not to depend on human reason (verses 5 and 7), the conclusion we are forced to come to that when wisdom is mentioned in Proverbs, they\u2019re not talking about <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Critique of Pure Reason.<\/span><\/em><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>What every mother wants<\/em>. \u201cYou will find favor and approbation In the eyes of God and man\u201d (verse 4).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Happy<\/em>! Remember \u201chappy is the man\u201d from Psalms 1? Compare that to verse 13 here: \u201cHappy is the man who finds wisdom, The man who attains understanding.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>How much is it worth<\/em>? Wisdom, that is. The answer is in verses 14-15 (hint: it\u2019s more than you can afford).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Woman, and the Tree of Life<\/em>. Wisdom is personified in the chapter as a woman. This what her two hands offer: \u201cIn her right hand is length of days, In her left, riches and honor\u201d (verse 16). And not only that: \u201cShe is a tree of life to those who grasp her, And whoever holds on to her is happy\u201d (verse 17). If that reminds you of the Garden of Eden, and the Tree of Knowledge, keep thinking.
