The last time we saw David in the cave was <\/span>back in chapter 57<\/span><\/a>: \"For the leader; al tash\u1e25eth. Of David. A michtam; when he fled from Saul into a cave.\" That psalm has some similar themes. For example, both 142 and 57 discuss David's enemies setting a trap for him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

However, the general feel of the two psalms is different. In Psalm 57, David is running into the cave, pursued by his enemies (Saul), and he hides there, looking up to God for help. In 142, David seems trapped. There are more images of prison and having nowhere to flee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Psalm 57 is a retelling of a story in David's life. Even the introduction explains that he runs into the cave to escape Saul. In 142 David is simply in the cave. Perhaps this cave is not a physical cave, but a metaphorical cave. This is a cave in David's mind that traps him. A cave that makes him feel depressed and buried. There is no narrative introduction here, because there is no narrative. David realizes the state he is in, and cries out to God to help him. \"Free me from prison, that I may praise Your name. The righteous shall glory in me for Your gracious dealings with me.\"\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

David ends this psalm by asking God to save him from this depression, so that others will praise God when they see David in public, awake, and engaged. Locked in his room, and depressed, David cannot be a beacon for God.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

You don\u2019t get why I beg you

You think it has something to do with guilt and pleasure,<\/p>\r\n

Or the origin of tragedy
\r\nIn the human need<\/p>\r\n

To act out what we suffer,
\r\nOr maybe the simple bitchiness
\r\nOf forcing you to savor<\/p>\r\n

A capacity for pain
\r\nAlmost as bottomless as your desire
\r\nTo hear my cries<\/p>\r\n

As pleasure. Omniscience
\r\nOblivious
\r\nTo the obvious: as long as I<\/p>\r\n

Am free to flee, I can\u2019t fulfill your fantasy
\r\nOf making love
\r\nOut of mortal terror<\/p>\r\n

In this psalm, the author discusses the freedom to flee: \u201cas long as I am free to flee...\u201d. In contrast, in Psalm 142 the author writes about their lack of freedom and their inability to flee: \u201cLook at my right and see--I have no friend; there is nowhere I can flee, no one cares about me.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\r\n

Back in our introduction <\/span><\/a>to the Book of Psalms, we spoke of how the historicization of Psalms can detract from its importance by limiting its impact to only those specific historical circumstances under which they were ostensibly written. We cited this psalm as an illustration. It purports to be a prayer recited by David himself when he was trapped in a cave (1), presumably during the incident described in 1 Samuel 24 (cf. Rashi and Radak), wherein David came out of a recess in the cave and cut off the corner of Saul\u2019s cloak.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Some of the details of that story are congruent with our psalm: he had no friends (5); he was being pursued (7); and being trapped within a cave could well be likened to being imprisoned (8). On the other hand, other than the word \u201ccave\u201d in the inscription, nothing in this chapter is exclusive to that event, allowing for its broader interpretation as the prototype of a prayer that would be recited by anyone who feels trapped even if they are being pursued and imprisoned only by their own psyches.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Indeed, it may well be that Malbim intended just this distinction in his commentary, in which he drew an explicit contrast between the behavior of someone actually stuck in a cave and someone whose cave is only internal. He wrote:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cI cry aloud to the Lord\u201d (2)\u2014while he was within the cave, he was afraid to call out aloud, lest his enemies hear him. [Otherwise], one is always able to call aloud to God without fear. [Moreover], I am unable to plead at length, even softly, because the pleading will reveal that someone is in the cave. But when one pleads with God, he can do so aloud without fear.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Psalm 142:<\/p>\r\n

Author:<\/em>
\r\nKing David--the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\r\n

When and Why:<\/em>
\r\nDavid wrote this psalm when Saul and his men were chasing after him. In order to avoid being captured, David hid himself, crouching in a cave. Saul entered into this same cave. While Saul stood there David thought to cut a corner of Saul\u2019s royal robe so that if he were ever be captured, David would avoid execution by showing Saul the missing piece of the robe. The swatch of cloth would be proof that David had the opportunity to kill Saul but spared him. So too, measure for measure\u201d, Saul should spare David\u2019s life.<\/p>\r\n

Genre:<\/em>
\r\nPsalm of Individual Lament--This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/p>\r\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\r\nKing David composed this psalm when hiding from Saul in a cave, at which time he offered a prayer to God to bring him out of the cave safely. This incident imparted to David the notion, which he often returns to throughout the book of Psalms, that one need never despair of Divine Compassion.<\/p>\r\n

This psalm consists of eight verses, subdivided into three sections. Verse 1 serves as a heading.
\r\nIn verses 2 and 3, King David cries out to God.
\r\nIn verses 4 and 5, he describes his troubles.
\r\nIn verses 6-8, he pleads for deliverance.<\/p>\r\n

Shimush Tehillim--When to Say:<\/em>
\r\nTo heal one\u2019s legs--Verse 4 states: \u201cWhen around me, enwraps itself my spirit and You know my path; in the path in which I walk they have hidden a trap for me.\u201d
\r\nIn times of distress-Verse 3 states: \u201cI pour out before Him my prayerful meditation, my distress, before Him, I declare.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

142:8 \u201cBring me out from the prison to acclaim Your name. For the righteous will draw round me when You requite me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The meaning of the verb <\/span>yakhtiru<\/span><\/em> is in dispute. Normally, it would mean \u201cto crown,\u201d but the verbal stem suggests \u201cto go around\u201d (a crown going around the head). Either the Masoretic <\/span>yakhtiru<\/span><\/em> has the sense here of <\/span>yekhatru<\/span><\/em> (the same root in another conjugation), \u201cto surround,\u201d or it should be revocalized as <\/span>yekhatru<\/span><\/em> (in the consonantal text, it lacks the <\/span>yod<\/span><\/em>, as the form <\/span>yekatru<\/span><\/em> does). This is the reading of the Septuagint.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. In the cave<\/em>. The heading of the psalm - \u201cA maskil of David, while he was in the cave. A prayer\u201d - connects it to an event in David\u2019s life, which we read about 453 chapters ago (I Sam. 24). While David was fleeing from Saul in the area of Ein Gedi, Saul entered a cave where David was hiding, but David decided not to use the opportunity to hurt Saul. You\u2019re invited to draw out the connections between the story and the psalm.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Many prayer synonyms<\/em>. Prayer \/ cry aloud \/ appeal \/ pour out \/ listen to my cry\u00a0 - all are in this psalm, in a variety of forms.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. And more hunting imagery<\/em>. Like the two preceding psalms, this psalm, too, avails itself of scenes from the hunt: \u201cthey have laid a trap in the path I walk\u201d (verse 4).
