You\u2019re toiling away, digging an irrigation ditch perhaps, or in some other way trying to change the world for the better.\u00a0 The sweat is plentiful, any respite elusive. You\u2019ve all but forgotten that this very morning you embraced the challenge of recognizing creativity even in what feels like a simple, rote activity; you were looking forward to admiring the results of a day\u2019s labor, but that anticipation has dissolved just as the dust on your work boots dissolves in the river of perspiration that drips from your body. Suddenly, the tiniest tickle of moving air dances across your forehead, your arms, as if something like the respiration that accompanies a baby\u2019s laugh is giving you a moment\u2019s comfort. And in parallel with the imagined child, a puffball of cloud high in the sky obscures the intensity of the sunshine just long enough for you to get back on track as you continue your creative task.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider how verses 3 and 4 of Psalm 144 relate to this little tale. In wondering about a godly perspective on the nature of humanity in verse 3, and then, in verse 4, characterizing a person as breath and a human day as a passing shadow, is the text alluding to human insignificance? And does the choice of these verses as a traditional introduction to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yizkor <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prayer point to an assumption that when we struggle to remember our deceased family members, we should remind ourselves of the mistake we make when we hold onto the conceit that human life is of real consequence?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe it\u2019s the other way around. Perhaps when we say \u201cYizkor \u2013 remember,\u201d we\u2019re sending a bold assertion in the direction of the heavenly throne. We might be saying, \u201cYou, Source of Energy, You have so much energy wrapped up in the big-picture aspects of Your creation that sometimes You appear unable to remember individual constituent parts of that creation that have done so much to make the created universe productive. Dear Lord, let me point out that those individuals for whom I say this prayer showered me with an unforgettable love that has led me to want to create a meaningful life for myself. But beyond that, their creative endeavors, undertaken in the image of ultimate creativity, reflected what You seemed to want when You undertook this process to begin with: a humanity that can provide even the unbreathing Infinite with sustaining breath, that can ease even a divinely difficult day, as it were, with the coolness of a passing shadow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, my Creator, as I focus my recollections I have a request. Yizkor. A byword of the era in which I grew up (in Boro Park, no less) was \u201cJewish children don\u2019t play with guns.\u201d Indeed, if one goes through Jewish history of the past two millennia\u2014stopping short of the 20<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century\u2014the only associations one might find between Jews and military service are Shmuel HaNagid (Spain, 11<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century) and the Cantonists (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jewish children who were conscripted to military institutions in czarist Russia).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, with the advent of self-emancipation and the Zionist movement, it became increasingly clear that national Jewish survival depended on the capacity for self-defense, and the emergence of the Shomrim and, later, the Haganah and Palmach, forerunners of the IDF, put the lie to the oft-invoked canard of Jewish meekness and docility in the face of aggression. (I was the first, and probably last, faculty member to be the official adviser to a Yeshiva College pistol club).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is somewhat reassuring, then, to observe that in an earlier era of Jewish self-sufficiency one could even compose a psalm expressing gratitude to God for providing the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct battle against one\u2019s enemies. Indeed, the Talmud elaborated on this theme, drawing as well from a parallel verse\u2014the opening of David\u2019s lament over Saul and Jonathan: \u201cTo instruct (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lelamed<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) the Judeans\u2019 sons [to shoot] a bow; behold it is written in the Book Yashar\u201d (2 Samuel 1:18).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which is the Book of Yashar? \u2014 Said R. Hiyya b. Abba in the name of R. Johanan: It is the book of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob who are designated as righteous and of whom Scripture says, \u201cLet me die the death of the righteous and let my last end be like his\u201d (Numbers 23:10). And where is this fact referred to? \u201cJudah, thee shall thy brethren praise; thy hand shall be on the neck of thine enemies\u201d (Gen. 49:8). What kind of fighting requires the aiming of the hand at the [enemy's neck]? The origin of the prayer is disputed, however the message is clear. On the High Holidays, God judges humanity: who will live and who will die, who by fire and who by water, who in his time and who before their time, etc. This is an awe-inspiring moment at which time I often think back to the different tragedies and triumphs of that past year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But for me, the more symbolic part of this prayer happens after this list. It is the section that paraphrases verse 5 in Psalm 144 that stands out: \u201cMan is like a breath; his days are like a passing shadow.\u201d In <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unetane Tokef<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this is extended to: \"We come from dust, and return to dust. We labor by our lives for bread, we are like broken shards, like dry grass, and like a withered flower; like a passing shadow and a vanishing cloud, like a breeze that passes, like dust that scatters, like a fleeting dream.\"\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The traditional melody for this paragraph is quiet and simple, with each phrase fleeting like the life of man. The whole paragraph ends with the Hebrew word for fleeting \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ya\u2019oof<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. A skilled chazan knows to emphasize that last \u201cF\u201d sound as if to mimic the quiet breath that dissipates rapidly. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>When and Why:<\/em><br \/>\r\nDavid wrote this psalm after defeating all his enemies in battle and when the people of Israel were finally living in peace.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Genre:<\/em><br \/>\r\nPsalm of Royalty--This psalm describes how God reigns supreme. It focuses on the human king of Israel, or upon God as King of Israel.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Chapter Summary:<\/em><br \/>\r\nKing David now expresses his gratitude to God for having given him the strength to wage war against his enemies. He specifically mentions his battle against Goliath, and thanks Him for helping him emerge victorious.<\/p>\r\n<p>This psalm consists of fifteen verses, subdivided into two parts.<br \/>\r\nIn verses 1-11, King David prays to the Almighty to rescue him from his enemies, and further blesses God for granting him victory and protecting him.<br \/>\r\nIn verses 12-15, he describes the future blessings of peace and plenty to be enjoyed after the defeat of one\u2019s pursuers.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Introductory Word:<\/em><br \/>\r\n\u05d1\u05e8\u05d5\u05da--Baruch--Blessed<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Shimush Tehillim--When to Say:<\/em><br \/>\r\nFor a broken hand--Verse 11 states: \u201cDeliver me and rescue me from the hand of strangers\u201d. <br \/>\r\nFor protection against damaging forces and demons--Verse 11 continues: \u201cWhose mouth speaks deceit, whose right hand is a right hand of falsehood\u201d.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Talmud on Tehillim:<\/em><br \/>\r\nVerse 12: \u201cSo that our sons are [pure] as plants...our daughters are as cornerpillars.\u201d <br \/>\r\nThe Talmud Pesachim 87a, explains that: \u201cSo that our sons are [pure] as plants\u201d refers to young Jewish men who have not sinned. \u201cOur daughters are as cornerpillars\u201d, continues the Talmud, refers to the purity and conduct of Jewish women. Verse 12 gives us a peek into the models of manly and womanly beauty: \u201cFor our sons are like saplings, well-tended in their youth; our daughters are like cornerstones trimmed.\u201d For the men, the image is one of upright trees. The woman: the corners of the palace (or the columns there), which are well-hewn and carved.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pantry (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mezaveh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>).<\/em> This very useful word in Hebrew is from here - the only place in the Tanach, a hapax: \u201cOur storehouses (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mezavenu<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are full, supplying produce of all kinds\u201d (verse 13).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Happy the people<\/em>. Verse 15 which closes the psalm, joins together with the next (145), and together they appear in the prayer book as one of the most central prayers.
