[Note that the Tetragrammaton, the four-letter name of God, is written in the paleo-Hebrew script (k’tav `ivri) rather than the usual square script (k’tav ‘ashuri). Some scholars consider this evidence that this scroll was intended for liturgical use.]

Two things are particularly noteworthy. First, see how closely Kahana’s retroversion (Greek back into Hebrew) matches the Dead Sea psalm and appreciate his ability to approximate the tone and texture of a biblical (or, in any case, Second Temple) poem. Second, and more significantly, see how the absence of the encounter with Goliath in the traditional text of Psalms so bothered some people in the Second Temple era that when they prepared their own—albeit sectarian—text they did not consider it complete without its representation. This, as much as any normative evidence, bears eloquent testimony to the esteem in which the Book of Psalms was held, as well as indicating that even at this relatively early point in Jewish history the book was already serving a liturgical function.

Indeed, the early Karaites, themselves sectarians (whose affinity to the Dead Sea Scrolls is examined, inter alia, by Naftali Weider: The Judean Scrolls and Karaism), limited their liturgy to the Book of Psalms, accounting, in large measure, for the emphasis placed by Se`adyah Gaon, their outstanding nemesis , on the book’s prophetic and Davidic authorship, as explained in our introduction to Psalms.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/ps151-qumran.png","1536x1536-width":481,"1536x1536-height":291,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/ps151-qumran.png","2048x2048-width":481,"2048x2048-height":291
Hillel Smith is a graphic designer, marketing consultant, illustrator, and artist based in Los Angeles and Washington DC. He established the first Hebrew printing press in Venice, where, in 1517, he published his first rabbinic Bible—a Bible with rabbinic commentaries printed around the biblical text. It was criticized, however, for containing numerous errors. In response, Bomberg hired Jacob ben Ḥayyim, a Jewish scholar of the Masorah, to edit a second rabbinic Bible, represented here. This edition is known as a Miqra’ot Gedolot (Large Scriptures) originally because of the large size of the folio. However, since the late 19th century, this term has come to encompass all rabbinic Bibles. Due to the efforts of Jacob ben Ḥayyim this edition became the first printed version of the Hebrew Bible to contain the entire Masorah along with the Tanakh, Targumim, and rabbinic commentaries. Psalms is a prime example of this phenomenon. Every chapter has taken on myriad additional meanings, as prayers during times of uncertainty, illness, and calamity. When you have a book like Psalms which is read piecemeal so regularly, the reader may find solace and strength in phrases they often repeat. They may not care about the original context, or even the entire Psalm. One phrase, in a vacuum, could become a constant meditation or mantra.

As I begin this series of artwork once a week based on Psalms, I began by reading chapter 3, and certain phrases jumped out at me. The governor even deployed the Arkansas National Guard to prevent the students from attending, defying a Supreme Court ruling.

Elizabeth Eckford, the first of the nine students to integrate an Arkansas school, later recalled: “They moved closer and closer. ... A terrible sin has been committed, the author is broken and confused by his conduct.

We may find it difficult to relate: why reach out to God as such a time? Surely one should look to make amends, to improve oneself, to repair the relationship that has suffered?

All of this is true, but the psalmist is demonstrating two important qualities here. There is both an awareness of his pain and an awareness of how it has been brought about by his own deeds, by the conflicts that live inside of him. I find this striking because these are the two things Freud says a person must have, or arrive at, in order to undergo a successful analysis.

It is not a secret that many people come into analysis due to an underlying sense of guilt, often manifesting as low self esteem or a lack of confidence. Two key themes in how it achieves this are the overcoming of resistance and the modification of conscience.

Resistance is not about conscious hostility to the analyst, though it can sometimes be expressed in that way. It is much more to do with the fact that we are fundamentally opposed to change, as much as we may protest otherwise. Our personalities have been formed in the crucible of our lives, we have adopted strategies that were necessary to survive. These are the things we refer to as ‘defences’. Our psyche is not about to readily give up on these, on the untested promise that something better awaits

Helping a person become less defensive and more open is thus a major part of the work, only then is there any chance of meaningful transformation. As far as I can tell, this is also a major objective of religion. It is about giving up on our defensive narcissism and adopting a more humble and open way of being.

Modifying conscience is a more controversial topic, who is the analyst to tell a person what their moral compass should look like?

The analyst does not do exactly this, but rather attempts to modify the tone and character of one’s conscience. Vic Sedlak explains that analysis aims at a conscience which is “concerned with nuanced moral judgment, which takes reality and humane consideration into account, rather than delivering absolute moralistic condemnation”.

This is not achieved through lecturing or criticism, but rather relies upon the analyst’s capacity for compassion, understanding and non-judgment. Psalm 23 presents a rich example of metaphor in action.

After an introductory title, the poet opens with a thesis statement: “The Lord is my shepherd.” Metaphors, as explanatory vehicles, represent thoughts and emotions through references to reality. Recall that in this ancient period, Israelite society was primarily agrarian with patches of urban living. The sight of a shepherd leading a flock with walking staff and crook in hand was part of daily life. The poet concretizes his feelings of complete dependence on God by metaphorically equating himself to a sheep in God’s flock. He emphasizes his reliance on divine sustenance and the benefits thereof. The subject of each verb in verses 2 and 3 is the shepherd/God, and the object is the sheep/poet. The shepherd causes the sheep to lie down, leads it to water, renews its life, and sets it on straight paths.

This shepherd, however, goes beyond the call of duty. By relying on God, the poet is rewarded with high-quality sustenance and tranquility.

This trust in God’s leadership and compassion sets the stage for verse 4, the most famous line of the poem. In this verse, the poet takes initiative. He moves from object to subject, here denoted by the use of elekh “I will go” – a first-person simple verb after a series of 3rd person causative ones. It provides a florid and persuasive language to describe the poet’s existence. In non-metaphorical terms, the poet’s experience of God’s constant presence provides him with the courage to navigate life’s darkest moments. These latter verses also showcase another quality of biblical metaphor: its tendency to blur or break down. While the poet casts himself as a sheep in verse 2, it is unclear to what extent he activates the metaphor in the following verses. Who stands as the subject of verse 3, the sheep or poet? Perhaps it is both at the same time.

Conceptual blurring certainly characterizes verse 4, in which the poet himself traverses a dark valley, but is comforted by the symbols of a shepherd: a staff and crook. It is, rather, that being exultant about Life – both natural and cultural - seems not to be enough for him. He needs in addition - to notice that he is noticing. He is calling himself to self-consciously acknowledge, even celebrate, not just Life but his own enthrallment with Life.

The psalm, after all, could have begun: “O LORD, my God, You are very great; You are clothed in glory and majesty.” That would have been a perfectly fine opening.

But it doesn’t. The psalmist opens with a call to self, as if to say, be aware of your awareness of the brilliant normalcy of life and how you are able to revel in it.

It is a great gift to live in this awesome world, the psalmist says. But even greater is the ability to realize, appreciate and celebrate the awesomeness of this world. Neither he, the psalm teaches, nor we, should ever take the world for granted.

If we ever did (and of course we did), we don’t now. This past year of nature-run-amok has reminded us of how glorious, and fragile, normalcy is.

Which might be why, despite the psalms exultation, we can see a dark cloud hovering over it. It emerges at verse 9 “You set bounds the waters must not pass so that they never again cover the earth.”

Once, perhaps. But not now. The psalmist could no doubt imagine drought and floods, famine and disease. That is why he is so grateful for the earth’s abundance.

But the psalmist could not imagine that the very operating system of the world could be put in jeopardy, with the waters transgressing their bounds, permanently covering parts of the earth they were not meant to cover in our lifetimes. He could not imagine mountain tops being cut down and dumped into rivers; or forests being decimated, destroying habitat for thousands of creatures. He could not imagine a great extinction when Life itself is being challenged.

It is a tragedy that we can not only imagine such a scene, but that we are experiencing it. Which is why this vision of such a normal, glorious, verdant, song-filled world remains doubly appealing. The exuberance of the psalmist reminds us of the refuge, goodness and comfort we find in nature, and of the vision we seek to renew. It is his words describing a world humming along, at peace with itself, that feeds our souls and drives us on to do the work at hand. The psalmist had his work: to celebrate the world.
