Their intention was to undermine the righteous king\u2019s rule and to kill him.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At that time, one of the prominent ministers stood in their way, and without his assistance their plan could not be carried out. The plotters therefore tried to entice him to join with them, promising that if he did so, they would anoint him as king in place of David. He resisted them, telling them that their evil plan was dangerous for them all, for even if he did join them, they would find no success. He argued that our master David was a pure and righteous individual who God would protect from all obstacles, and those who plotted against him would surely be punished as they deserved.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Realizing that they could not convince him, they decided to capture and kill him so that he should not succeed in undoing their plans When this minister realized his predicament, he took up this prayer:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3) O LORD, set a guard over my mouth, that I should not agree to join them, set a watch etc. 4) let my mind not turn to an evil thing, etc. 5) for I know that if Heaven forfend I should agree, and they take his life, then the righteous man will strike me and reprove me, that is, my heart will strike me and belittle me for turning against a righteous man who did no wrong. My soul will never be at rest, knowing as I do that it is I who caused his life to be forfeited. It is for this reason that I ask of You, that I should not deviate from my original decision to reject their offers to raise me up to become king.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, I pray of You, that I should pay no attention to their threats against me should I refuse to join them, and protect me that they should not harm me \u2013 and that beyond that 6) their judges, who declared a death sentence against me should slip on the rock, and my words, rebuking them, should be heard when I declare that they should receive from God the punishment that they deserve. For ultimately they will be forced to admit their sins and accept their punishment, saying 7) that just as when the earth is broken up and plowed to be sown, if good seeds are planted, the earth will bring forth good grain, yet if poor quality seeds are planted, the earth will bring forth weeds and prickly shrubs, so by our actions we have sown ourselves at the mouth of Sheol. Here is Alter\u2019s explanation:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This whole clause is problematic in the Hebrew, which seems to say \u201cLet not oil of the head (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shemen ro\u2019sh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) negate [?] (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">al yani<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) my head (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ro\u2019shi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u201d The translation assumes that the first <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ro\u2019sh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u201chead\u201d) has been inadvertently duplicated from the second, and originally read <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rasha<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">`, \u201cwicked man.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The verb <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yani<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> here is anomalous, lacking the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aleph<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the end that would make it mean \u201cnegate\u201d and not corresponding to any recognizable Hebrew verb formation. The translation guesses it may derive from the root <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n-w-h<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\u201cto be beautiful,\u201d yielding <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">noy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cbeauty\u201d in postbiblical Hebrew). Oil on the head was regarded as a pleasure and an enhancement.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever the obscurity, the line means to contrast the preferability of being While the Tabernacle was available to King David and the Temple would be built soon after his death, King David laid the groundwork for direct supplication to God. Nowadays, the prayer services have replaced the Temple services both with direct replacement as in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>musaf<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">service and in additional services such as the morning prayers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">King David, though, did not invent the idea of praying. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob all prayed and were the inspiration for the three services during the day. Moses, Miriam and Devorah all sang songs of praise to God. Moses also prayed for his sister and on behalf of the Jewish people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is unique in this chapter is that King David is making a direct connection between the Tabernacle\/Temple service. \"Take my prayer as an offering of incense, my upraised hands as an evening sacrifice\" (verse 2). David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>When and Why:<\/em><br \/>\r\nDavid wrote this psalm when he went to Philistia to escape Saul. In it, he prays that he should not be tempted to adopt the beliefs and practices of the Philistines.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Genre:<\/em><br \/>\r\nPsalm of Individual Lament--This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Chapter Summary:<\/em><br \/>\r\nKing David asks of God to safeguard him from sinning with his tongue. Let no wicked man\u2019s oil adorn my head, for still my prayer is against their evils.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>This whole clause is problematic in the Hebrew, which seems to say \u201cLet not oil of the head negate [?] my head.\u201d The translation assumes that the first <em>ro\u2019sh<\/em> (\u201chead\u201d) has been inadvertently duplicated from the second, and originally read <em>rasha\u2019<\/em>, \u201cwicked man.\u201d The verb <em>yani<\/em> here is anomalous, lacking the <em>aleph<\/em> at the end that would make it mean \u201cnegate\u201d and not corresponding to any recognizable Hebrew verb formation. The translation guesses it may derive from the root <em>n-w-h<\/em> (\u201cto be beautiful,\u201d yielding <em>noy<\/em> \u201cbeauty\u201d in postbiblical Hebrew). Oil on the head was regarded as a pleasure and an enhancement.
