We may presume that in so doing he expressed the experience of the predicament as shared by himself and other “poor and needy” persons (13) like himself. Since he was not unique in his suffering, his feelings were expressed adequately in terms that are common to him and to others who suffer similarly. Perhaps, in the mutual experience of suffering there is even a measure of consolation.

In the preliminary prayer (7-9), the elements are nearly alike. However, if we look carefully, we find that the mundane is dominant in the introductions—except for the experience of personal salvation with which the poet was tested previously. In the very petition, the singular elements stand out, perhaps in order to prevent a repetition of what was already said in the description of the predicament, and to give the power of novelty to his expression.

The singular elements multiply in addressing evil (10-12). Here, the picture is the opposite of the description of the predicament, and not for naught. The use of coarse forms, and rare and singular combinations, reflects an emotional power that requires fresh vocabulary that can be loaded with fresh baggage. A stimulus to seek out the uncommon was provided by the accumulation of expressions of ambush in the description of the predicament. In order to express “measure for measure” in a fresh language after such an accumulation, the poet was forced to embellish. In this portion, not only are there few repetitions of words that already appeared in the poem, but there is not even one recognized word-pair or parallelism. Waves of evil engulf the wicked and not one resembles the other.

The opposite is true of the last stanza, which expresses trust and gratitude (13-14). Here the poet made do entirely with the mundane; this is the sole portion that has not even one singular element. If, in the predicament, there was yet an attempt at some individuality, in the vision of salvation he immersed himself entirely in the community of the poor and righteous. His language was completely that of the community that prays and offers gratitude, and in so doing he expressed his feeling that his entire good fortune could come only amid the community of the redeemed.

The psalmist’s language is that of the community, expressing the feeling that his entire good fortune could come only amid the community of the redeemed.
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/לוגו.png","1536x1536-width":1513,"1536x1536-height":860,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/לוגו.png","2048x2048-width":1513,"2048x2048-height":860
"type_929":"2

Click here to see the rich collection of readings and reflections we've brought to you for Pesach

A selection of essays and short posts on the Torah and Haftarah selections from the holiday, from your favorite 929 authors

Chag sameach - This root appears sparingly in the Torah before appearing ubiquitously throughout the prophets.

What is interesting is that in the Torah it used to describe a wide range of individuals. The generation of the flood is damned for having filled the world with lawlessness (Genesis 6:11-13). This type of lawlessness is never defined. We do not know from text if the people were violent or if they were thieves. It simply was a general state of being that so irked God that he was determined to flood the inhabited world.

The remaining use of the term does not provide further insight into the meaning. Jacob warns that Shimon and Levi are brothers in lawlessness (Genesis 49:5) referencing their previous rampage through the city of Shechem. Clearly this reference is to violence. However, Exodus 23:1 and Deuteronomy 19:16 warn the Israelites not to act as false witnesses thereby causes lawlessness to reign. This use seems more like untrustworthy and cheating behavior.

So what is the lawlessness? Perhaps it is a subjective term that refers to actions that are anathema to the one who uses them. Bearing false witness is wrong because the false witness lies and cheats the target of his false statements. This type of lawlessness bastardized the judicial process creating a sense of lawlessness. To Jacob, the violent actions of Levi and Shimon sullied his name in Canaan, and was against everything he believed in. For him, this lawlessness was irredeemable. That is why the lawlessness of the generation of the flood is undefined. It leaves open to one's imagination to determine what could those people have done to so anger God that he would wipe out the world.

"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/jud17-lawlessness.png","1536x1536-width":503,"1536x1536-height":205,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/jud17-lawlessness.png","2048x2048-width":503,"2048x2048-height":205
"1536x1536":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/jud17-lawlessness.png","1536x1536-width":503,"1536x1536-height":205,"2048x2048":"https://wp.929.org.il/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/jud17-lawlessness.png","2048x2048-width":503,"2048x2048-height":205
Reuben Ebrahimoff is the author of a "user's guide" to the Book of Psalms, entitled "From Your Lips to God’s Ears, The 10 Things You Need To Know About the Book of Tehillim – Psalms." Affectionately known as “The Haftorahman,” was the first Mashadi Jew from Persia to attend Yeshiva in the U.S.A.
