This succinct psalm concludes the series of the 15 songs of ascent. As such, it possesses a distinctive liturgical flavor calling upon \u201call servants of the Lord\u201d (1) to offer blessings to Him.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Why was a blessing invoked? Ibn Ezra and Radak connected it to the previous psalm. Ibn Ezra wrote: \u201cSince you will be blessed like the dew of Hermon (133:3), you are obliged to bless the Lord,\u201d while Radak linked it to the balance of that verse: \u201cThe Lord ordained blessing, everlasting life,\u201d therefore everyone should bless Him with their praises.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Those who \u201cstand nightly in the house of the Lord\u201d (1) appear to be the <\/span>kohanim<\/span><\/em>, the only people who would be present there at those times with any regularity. This identification is supported by the next verse, which calls on those servants to \u201cLift your hands toward the sanctuary and bless\u201d Him (2), a posture that is associated with the priestly blessing that is called, traditionally, \u201cthe raising of the hands\u201d (<\/span>nesi\u2019at kapayim<\/span><\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

It may be only a coincidence, but the concluding verse begins with \u201cMay the Lord bless you\u201d (3, <\/span>yevarekh\u2019kh<\/span>a <\/span>hashem<\/span><\/em>), which is also how the traditional priestly blessing begins. The full phrase, \u201cMay the Lord bless you from Zion\u201d (3), may be a liturgical formula that we have already encountered, albeit with a different coda. Earlier, it was followed by \u201cMay you share the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life\u201d (125:5), whereas here it concludes with an appellative of God: \u201cMaker of heaven and earth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Three verses. Five mentions of God's name. In a short chapter, we hear the poetic beats of the verses. God becomes the center piece that holds this psalm together. We jump to three quick beats in the first verse- God appears at the beginning, middle and end. The \"blind,\" the \"deaf,\" the \"hunchbacked\" and the \"lame,\"
\r\nWho built the castle-walls of hewn white stone
\r\nAnd tilled the royal field where faith was grown,
\r\nAre searching for the king who lost his name.
\r\nBut can the king be found? Some searchers claim
\r\nHis signet ring, his scepter and his throne
\r\nHave disappeared, their whereabouts unknown,
\r\nHis castle \u2014 in ruins, his field \u2014 set aflame.<\/p>\r\n

Yet though they seem to barely walk or see

\r\nUnknown; perhaps King David--the second king of Israel and father of the Davidic royal and messianic dynasty. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\r\n

Genre:<\/em>
\r\nPsalm of Pilgrimage--These psalms were used at the beginning of pilgrimages as well as once the Pilgrim had reached his or her destination.
\r\nSong of Ascents--A title given to fifteen of the Psalms, 120-134, that each starts with the ascription Shir HaMa\u2019alot, meaning \u201cSong of Ascents\u201d. These psalms praise, exalt, and \u201celevate\u201d God.<\/p>\r\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\r\nIn this fifteenth and final psalm of the series of Shir HaMa\u2019alot (Song of Ascents), the singer once again turns to the Kohanim (Priests) and declares: \u201cBehold, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord.\u201d As the previous psalm concluded with praises of Jerusalem and the land of Israel when the Jewish people will dwell there, the psalmist concludes the series by proclaiming that its excellence stems from the righteous who praise and worship God \u201cby the night\u201d.<\/p>\r\n

This psalm, like the previous one, consists of a mere three verses, subdivided into two sections.
\r\nIn verses 1 and 2, the singer calls upon all \u201cservants of Adonoy\u201d to lift their hands and bless God.
\r\nIn verse 3, he boldly declares that God will in turn bless those who bless him.<\/p>\r\n

  1. A different sort of blessing<\/em>. The blessing of the servants of God is praise and adoration. The blessing of God to people is the granting of goodness and blessing.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Now that\u2019s how you bless<\/em>. Blessings are given with lifting up of the hands: \u201cLift your hands toward the sanctuary and bless the LORD.\u201d That\u2019s how Aaron bless the people 601 chapters ago (Lev. 9), and that\u2019s how Solomon blessed the people at the dedication of the Temple in 1 Kings 8:22.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. The riddle of the connection.<\/em> The songs of ascents (Psalms 120-134) end with a blessing - and not by coincidence. If you look closely at this group of psalms, you\u2019ll notice that the blessing from the book of Numbers, the priestly blessing, is embedded in them and connects them all. \u201cThe LORD bless you and protect you! The LORD deal kindly and graciously with you! The LORD bestow His favor upon you and grant you peace!\u201d<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n
