Adam, Eve, Noah, Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebecca, Jacob, Rachel, Leah, Joseph, Benjamin, Moses, Aaron, Miriam, David, Esther, Ruth, Isaiah, Amos, Jonah... Many of the names we read in the Tanach are in current use to this day (including my own). Then there are names that haven\u2019t lived on. It\u2019s the unusual parent who would name a baby Lot or Esau or even Zebulon (although there is a Zebulon, North Carolina). And one wouldn\u2019t name a child after one of the Bible\u2019s villains like Balak or Haman for obvious reasons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

That would explain why Og has fallen into disuse, but it\u2019s such an odd name that it stands out when it turns up in Psalms 135 and 136. \u201cHe struck down many nations and slew numerous kings\u2014 Sihon, king of the Amorites, Og, king of Bashan, and all the royalty of Canaan.\u201d (Ps. 135: 10, 11). This note is repeated in Ps. 136:17-20 So who was Og, who sounds like a character in a fairy tale or animated movie?<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Numbers 21:33, after the chapter has recounted several battles of the Israelites, reads: \u201cThey marched on and went up the road to Bashan, and King Og of Bashan, with all his people, came out to Edrei to engage them in battle.\u201d Some more detail is provided in Deuteronomy which includes these fascinating details: \u201cOnly King Og of Bashan was left of the remaining Rephaim. His bedstead, an iron bedstead, is now in Rabbah of the Ammonites; it is nine cubits long and four cubits wide, by the standard cubit!\u201d\u00a0 (Deut. 3:11). The Rephaim were giants and Og was apparently so big that the size of his bed was noteworthy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

So similar to the later story of David toppling Goliath with a well-placed stone, the victory of Moses\u2019s army of Israelites over the giant Og and his forces was memorably impressive if not downright miraculous. Og is also noted in ancient texts from other civilizations and even in Islamic folklore. The story I found most intriguing is a Midrash that has Og as the only one of the ancient giants to survive the great flood, which he did by hitching a ride on the outside of the ark.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

We probably don\u2019t need to revive Og as a popular name, but doing a little rudimentary research gave me some context for our oft-repeated psalms.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

In Psalm 135, the psalmist distinguishes between \u201cpraising God\u201d (\u201c<\/span>Hallelu<\/span><\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/i>) \u2014v. 1, 2, 3\u2014and \u201cblessing God\u201d (\u201c<\/span>Barchu<\/span><\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/i>)\u2014v. 19, 20, 21.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\u201cBlessing\u201d can be understood as a subcategory of \u201cpraising.\u201d When one acknowledges that God is behind some worldly phenomenon by reciting a blessing in connection with consuming, viewing, listening to, or, in the case of a commandment, acting in accordance with a religious directive, reciting: \u201cBlessed are you, our God, king of the universe that\u2026\u201d, they are praising the Creator for creating a context whereby one is caused to call Him to mind in this particular manner.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

But there nevertheless is a significant difference between \u201cpraising\u201d and \u201cblessing\u201d: is the goal to influence others, or essentially remind oneself, of God\u2019s Greatness?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Maimonides considers praising God as an outward manifestation of inwardly loving God, with public praise becoming the means of sharing one\u2019s intense personal feelings with others:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The 3rd mitzva is that we are commanded to love God\u2026 this mitzvah includes calling out to all mankind to serve God and to believe in Him. This is because when you love a person, for example, you praise him and call out to others to draw close to him. So too, if you truly love God \u2026 you will certainly spread this true knowledge that you know \u2026 <\/span>
\r\n<\/span>The Sifri <\/span>states<\/span>: \" 'You shall love God\u2026,' \" i.e. make Him beloved among the creatures as your father Avraham did\u2026 This powerful love therefore caused him to call out to all mankind to believe in God. So too, you shall love Him to the extent that you draw others to Him.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

These words suggest that \u201cpraise\u201d is best expressed in the presence of others, so the audience is \u201cmoved by\u201d or even comes to identify with the deep emotion that is expressed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Most blessings, on the other hand, do not require an audience, although if one exists, the proper response is the word \u201cAmen.\u201d However, a blessing is required even when there is no one else to listen and respond. Consequently, a blessing appears to be more for the benefit of the \u201cbless-er,\u201d who is acknowledging essentially to himself the prowess and power of the thing being blessed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Therefore, Psalm 135 could be understood as presenting the following dichotomy: the original call is for the Jewish people to go out to others and share their experiences of Jewish history and monotheism, as opposed to idolatry,. But whether or not they are successful in terms of serving as a \u201clight unto the nations\u201d (Isaiah 42:6; 49:6,) they are never to forget their specific personal relationship with God by reciting manifold and appropriate blessings:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

v. 19: the Jewish people; the family of Aharon;
\r\nv. 20: the tribe of Levi; those considering themselves God-fearers;
\r\nv. 21: residents of Zion and Jerusalem.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n

One of the most iconic moments in the Harry Potter series is when a new student enters into the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and is sorted into one of the four houses at the school by the sorting hat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Psalm 135 has its own four houses: \"O house of Israel, bless the LORD; O house of Aaron, bless the LORD; O house of Levi, bless the LORD; you who fear the LORD, bless the LORD.\"\u00a0 An astute reader will notice something odd about these four houses. Three are familiar: the house of Israel, the house of Aaron and the house of Levi. These are the three possible houses into which all Jews today are separated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Yet what is this fourth house- those who fear God? Is this a separate category? Shouldn't everyone fall into this category? It seems that the four houses are actually meant to do that. It is easy to separate into the three familiar categories of Israel, Levite and Priest. But in the end the entire nation belongs in one house together- the house of those who fear God. Back in Psalm 115, I wrote<\/span><\/a>: \u201cHere it is the futility of idolatry that is emphasized, in a manner that is duplicated in yet another, later psalm, albeit with some significant differences that I leave you to contemplate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Let us focus here on what appears to be the essential difference between these two versions, one that may account for all the individual differences: Psalm 115 is describing idolatry at the height of its success (\u201cWhy shall the nations say, where is their God,\u201d 115:2), while Psalm 135 describes it upon its decline (\u201cOur Lord is greater than all gods,\u201d 135:5).<\/span><\/p>\r\n

As the Talmud states:<\/span><\/p>\r\n

There is no nation which is smitten that its gods are not smitten together with it, as it is said, \u201cAnd against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments.\u201d But when Israel fulfil the will of the Omnipresent, they need have no fear of all these [omens] as it is said, \u201cThus saith the Lord,\u2019 Learn not the way of the nations, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven, for the nations are dismayed at them.\u201d The idolaters will be dismayed, but Israel will not be dismayed. (Sukkah 29a)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

This distinction accounts for the following difference: (See <\/span>our notes to Psalm 115 <\/span><\/a>for all the differences.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n

When and Why:<\/em>
\r\nThis psalm was read aloud to the Priests and Levites in the Temple as an accompaniment to their prayers.<\/p>\r\n

Genre:<\/em>
\r\nPsalm of Praise--This is a psalm of celebration, often the result of a victory. It declares God\u2019s goodness and urges all of creation to worship.<\/p>\r\n

Chapter Summary:<\/em>
\r\nThe singer now bids the House of Israel to praise God for all he has wrought on our behalf throughout history. Miracles of the ten plagues, the Exodus from Egypt, the Israelites' sojourn in the wilderness and subsequent entry into the Holy Land are all recounted, as evidence that God supervises and guides the unfolding of history. By contrast, worship of false Gods, the author asserts, is worthless.<\/p>\r\n

This psalm consists of twenty-one verses, subdivided into three sections.
\r\nIn verses 1-3, the psalmist calls upon the congregation to praise God.
\r\nIn verses 4-18, he describes the greatness and power of God, expressed through the wonders of creation, the plagues in Egypt and the conquest of Canaan. He further contrasts God\u2019s being eternal with idols, the mere handiwork of man.
\r\nIn verses 19-21, the psalmist comes full circle and once again calls upon the congregation to bless God.<\/p>\r\n

This entire line is virtually identical with Deuteronomy 32:36 and should probably be thought of as a deliberate quotation. There are some linguistic indications that this psalm is relatively late (for example, the use of the Aramaic-influenced accusative <\/span>lamed<\/span><\/em> before the three nouns in verse 11), though it is not altogether certain that the national disaster after which the psalmist awaits vindication is the Babylonian exile.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

  1. The Great Hallel<\/em>. Psalms 135 and 136 are a unit that is referred to as \u201cthe great Hallel.\u201d Not a surprising name.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  2. Climate<\/em>. From all the possible natural phenomena the psalm focuses on the impressive power expressed by rain. Note the movement, and the image of God\u2019s treasure chest, where He keeps these precious forces: \u201cHe makes clouds rise from the end of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain; He releases the wind from His vaults\u201d (verse 7).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  3. Idle idols<\/em>. Verses 15-18 make fun of the helplessness of the idols, and don\u2019t see them as symbolic representations of the gods. We have encountered this approach to idolatry in the Prophets, e.g., Isaiah 44. There are other approaches, however - such as that in Isaiah ch. 2.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t
  4. Dividing up into groups<\/em>. Just like Psalm 118, our psalm turns to various groups with the call to bless God (verses 19-21). And again we ask the question: who are those \u201cwho fear the Lord?\u201d How does one join?
