This is the first major battle over land that the Israelites encounter. The Israelites defeat Og, and press forward to the lands of Sichon. God instructs Moses to not be afraid of the Ammorites, and again the Israelites defeat their enemy in battle.

Suddenly, the Israelites are rulers over large swaths of land east of the Jordan. It follows the direct progression of the Israelites from bondage in Egypt and a passive redemption to the beginning of entering the Land of Canaan and active redemption. Each line ends with the words “for His kindness is eternal.” Its twenty-six verses correspond to the twenty-six generations from Creation until the receiving of the Torah at Sinai. The refrain indicates that as those generations did not have the Torah through which to merit God’s beneficence, God nonetheless sustained them due to His pure loving kindness.

This psalm consists of twenty-six verses, subdivided into three sections.
In verses 1-3, the psalmist calls upon the congregation to praise God.
In verses 4-24, he describes the wonders of God through the creation of the world, the Exodus from Egypt, and the conquest of Israel. The singer further celebrates God’s remembering and saving His creatures, providing them with substance.
In verse 26, the psalmist comes full circle, once again calling on the congregation to bless God.

Introductory Word:
הודו--Hodu--Give thanks

Shimush Tehillim--When to Say:
To help one admit sins and confess--Each verse states: “For His kindliness endures forever.”

Interesting Fact:
The word “hodu” means both “give thanks” and “admit”, as thanking can only come from appreciation and subsequent admission.

Excerpted from From Your Lips To God’s Ears, by Reuben Ebrahimoff.

psalms -
