(See <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/294\/post\/61921\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our comments on 1 Kings 7<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). What is in doubt is the identity of the psalmist.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashi maintained that it was David, and that the psalm was composed prophetically to warn Solomon of the consequences of his more dubious activities:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David recited this song about his son, Solomon, for he saw through the holy spirit that he [Solomon] was destined to build the Temple, and on that very day, he would marry Pharaoh's daughter [whose idolatry he tolerated], concerning which it was said (Jer. 32:31): \"For this city has aroused My anger and My wrath since the day they built it.\" Therefore, [David] recited this song. My son, why should you build a house and turn away from following the Omnipresent? Since He does not desire it, its workers have toiled at it in vain.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibn Ezra agreed with the identification of David as author, but attributed the psalm to a different set of circumstances:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This psalm was composed by one of the poets regarding Solomon. It was composed when David desired to build a house for the Lord and Nathan the prophet prophesied that Solomon, David\u2019s son, would build it. David was at first worried. However, he soon rejoiced. The poet then noted that things are not in keeping with the thoughts of man. They are in the hand of God. Things are not in accordance with the amount of effort that a person expends in his work and the amount of strength he draws upon.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A minor philological note: The psalm concludes with \u201cHappy is the man who fills his quiver with [sons]\u201d (5). Hebrew for quiver is \u2018<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ashpah <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(in Lamentations 3:13, arrows are called \u201cchildren of the quiver\u201d), but it is also the modern Hebrew word for garbage. However, <em>\u2018<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ashpah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\/quiver derives from the Akkadian <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ishpatu<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while <em>\u2018<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ashpah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\/garbage stems from <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sh\u2019fot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an ash heap (see Nehemiah 3: 13-14, where there is a reference to <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sha`ar sh\u2019fot\/\u2019ashpot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from which refuse was removed from the Temple).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Image: R. Of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain on it; unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman keeps vigil in vain.\" The psalmist (maybe David, maybe Solomon) cries out: \u201cthese people are working towards building Jerusalem and the Temple and you God, will not let it happen? All their work would be for nothing if you do not protect this city and this building!\u201d\u00a0 This echoes Moses's argument to God that if he destroys the Israelites for their many sins in the wilderness then the entire exodus would have been for naught.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the rest of the psalm does not match this tone. The remainder talks about the beauty of children. Why is there such a sudden shift? Perhaps the first part should be read differently. The psalmist is not guilting God. The psalmist is encouraging the workers and the guards. Do not despair! He tells them. If you put in the work God will help protect this city and the Temple. How could he not! He then continues this theme. Just as people are proud of their children- with all the hard work that raising them entails- so too will God be proud of the hard work of his children in building this city and the Temple. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>When and Why:<\/em><br \/>\r\nIt is plausible that David wrote this psalm after hearing from the prophet Nathan that his son Solomon will build the Temple.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Genre:<\/em><br \/>\r\nPsalm of Pilgrimage--These psalms were used at the beginning of pilgrimages as well as once the Pilgrim had reached his or her destination.<br \/>\r\nPsalm of Wisdom--This psalm contains teachings and wise advice and is meant to instruct people on how to live a Godly life.<br \/>\r\nSong of Ascents--A title given to fifteen of the Psalms, 120-134, that each starts with the ascription Shir HaMa\u2019alot, meaning \u201cSong of Ascents\u201d. These psalms praise, exalt, and \u201celevate\u201d God.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Chapter Summary:<\/em><br \/>\r\nAs the opening verse indicates, it appears that King David composed this psalm, the eighth in the series of Shir HaMa\u2019alot (Song of Ascents), regarding his son Solomon. The Psalmist specifically speaks of the Beit HaMikdash (Holy Temple) that Solomon would build and the royal dynasty of the House of David that would be passed down through him for all future generations. These accomplishments, the Psalmist reminds us, are dependent upon God\u2019s help, and not due solely to human endeavor.<\/p>\r\n<p>This psalm consists of five verses, subdivided into two parts.<br \/>\r\nIn verses 1 and 2, the psalmist emphasizes that the help of God is needed if man is to succeed in his efforts.<br \/>\r\nIn verses 3-5, he further describes the benefit and happiness enjoyed by the one to whom God has granted children.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Introductory Word:<\/em><br \/>\r\n\u05e9\u05d9\u05e8--Shir\u2014Song<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Shimush Tehillim--When to Say:<\/em><br \/>\r\nFor protection of a child in utero---Verses 3 and 4 state: \u201cBehold, a heritage of Adono, are children a reward [from Him] is the fruit of the womb. As arrows in the hand of a mighty man, so are the children of one\u2019s youth.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Talmud on Tehillim:<\/em><br \/>\r\nVerse 2: \u201cIt is in vain for you that you rise early, sit up late.\u201d<br \/>\r\nThe Talmud, Ketubot 62a, deduces that this refers to the wives of Talmidei Chachamim (Torah scholars), who lose sleep each night as they patiently await the return of their husbands from the study hall. (In Lamentations 3:13, \u201cshafts of his quiver\u201d is a kenning for \u201carrows,\u201d and this verse may well be a play on that poetic formula.) The man who begets many sons in his youth creates the equivalent of a little army on which he can depend. In the social structure of ancient Israel, this may not have been an entirely fanciful notion. Is his building of the Temple connected to the claim, \u201cUnless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain on it?\u201d Or, does his being the wisest among men connect him to a wisdom psalm? Or a different reason? There are many commentaries.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Vain-ity<\/em>. The word \u201cvain\u201d is repeated three times in the first two verses. The message is clear.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Bread of toil<\/em>. What sort of bread is this?
