(1-3)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The phrase \u201cswallowed us alive\u201d resonates with a Mishnah that declares: \u201cPray for the welfare of the kingdom; were it not for the fear [it instills], people would swallow each other alive\u201d (Avot 3:2). This advice, provided by Rabbi Chanina, a kohen who served in the Second Temple, is patterned on the instruction issued by the prophet Jeremiah. Addressing \u201cthe priests, the prophets, the rest of the elders of the exile community, and to all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had exiled from Jerusalem to Babylon\u201d (29:1) during the reign of King Jehoiachin, he enjoined them \u201cto seek the welfare of the city to which I have exiled you and pray to the LORD in its behalf; for in its prosperity you shall prosper\u201d (29:7).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \"eaten alive metaphor is interrupted by one of drowning (\u201cThe waters would have carried us off,\u201d etc., 4-5), but is resumed with \u201cBlessed is the LORD, who did not let us be ripped apart by their teeth\u201d (6). In the next verse, the psalm describes Israel as \u201ca bird that has escaped from the fowler\u2019s trap,\u201d followed by a seemingly redundant \u201cthe trap broke and we escaped\u201d (7). Psalm 124 is the \u201cBack to the Future\u201d of Psalms: \"Had it not been for God who was for us.\"\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this alternate telling, the Israelites would not have even made it out of Egypt. \"The waters would have then swept us away:\" this is clearly a reference to the splitting of the sea.\u00a0 \"When men rose up against us\" is pretty generic, but if we keep to the theme of the Exodus, this could be referring to the Egyptians chasing the Israelites as they reached the sea. This would make sense, since in that moment they were trapped in the \"fowler's snare\" in between the water and the encroaching Egyptian forces. It could also be a reference to the first battle, the battle with Amalek.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is often a useful exercise to think back at such \"what if\" scenarios. Such introspection allows us to not take things for granted. King David does not want the people to rest on their laurels. Do not take God for granted. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>When and Why:<\/em><br \/>\r\nThis psalm informs us as to how God will ensure the survival and continuity of the Jewish people when they are in exile.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Genre:<\/em><br \/>\r\nPsalm of Pilgrimage--These psalms were used at the beginning of pilgrimages as well as once the Pilgrim had reached his or her destination.<br \/>\r\nSong of Ascents--A title given to fifteen of the Psalms, 120-134, that each starts with the ascription Shir HaMa\u2019alot, meaning \u201cSong of Ascents\u201d. These psalms praise, exalt, and \u201celevate\u201d God.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Chapter Summary:<\/em><br \/>\r\nKing David composed this song, the fifth in the series of Shir HaMa\u2019alot (Song of Ascents), for future exiles to recite upon their redemption. Verse 4 displays semantic parallelism without verbal repetition in its two halves (\u201cwaters\u201d \/ \u201ctorrent,\u201d \u201cswept us up,\u201d \/ \u201ccome up past our necks\u201d). Then 5a repeats \u201ccome up past our necks\u201d and 5b repeats \u201cthe waters\u201d from 4a, adding the adjectival increment \u201craging\u201d and so producing a climactic effect. One is a wild beast, who can swallow its prey whole (verse 3), and raging waters, which are not innocent natural forces but <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mayim zeidoniim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, here translated as \u201cseething waters,\u201d but which could also be rendered \u201cmalicious water.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>No victory here<\/em>. There is no final victory in the chapter. But even a temporary escape can be a salvation of sorts that is worthy of recognition.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><em>Internal linkages<\/em>.
