Since it did not have the frequency and weight of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">am<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0or <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">goy<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it was available in modern Hebrew for the new terms related to the modern nation-state and nationalism.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Modern Hebrew we find the word used most frequently in the adjectival form \u2013 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leumi<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0- \"national\": Bank Leumi, Sherut Leumi (national service), Bituach Leumi (national insurance), etc. The noun has migrated to the meaning \"nationality\", as can be found on identity cards.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last word for nation, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uma<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is the most infrequent of the four. Besides in our verse, it only appears in two other verses (Genesis 25:16 and Numbers 24:15). All three appearances are in the plural. It is cognate with the Arabic <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ummah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning \u201ccommunity\u201d (usually with a common religious background.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Modern Hebrew, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uma<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is used for nation in cases where neither <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medina<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(\u201cstate\u201d) or '<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">am<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0are appropriate. So an address to the nation is a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neum leuma<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and the United Nations are the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">umot meuchadot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, in the United Nations Plaza, a quote from the Bible (Isaiah 2:4) is proudly displayed. It is, indeed, not only the briefest psalm, but the shortest chapter in Tanakh\u2014a fact that did not escape notice by the exegetes who, nevertheless, had much more than that to say about it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radak wrote:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This psalm, consisting of but two verses, is about the Messianic age. Its containment in just two verses symbolizes that all people will be in either one of two groups: Israel will persist in its Torah, while the other nations will flock together about the seven [Noahide] commandments. All will praise God because all will come then to recognize Him. And since [the psalmist] said \u201cPraise God\u201d directed at Israel, he foresaw prophetically that all the nations will praise God, so he invited them to join [together with Israel] in praising Him.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malbim connected our psalm to one of its predecessors, saying:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He stated that God fulfilled his request by rescuing Israel. Likewise, all the nations that were taken captive by Sennacherib and whom he brought before Jerusalem, will praise God \u201cfor great is His steadfast love toward us\u201d (2), because that spared the lives of those captives as well, as stated: \u201cEgypt\u2019s wealth and Nubia\u2019s gains and Sabaites, long of limb, shall pass over to you and be yours, pass over and follow you in fetters, bow low to you and reverently address you: \u201cOnly among you is God, There is no other god at all!\u201d (Isaiah 45:14). All of the nations that fought Sennacherib praised God for this, to wit: \u201cAnd what will he answer the messengers of any nation? That Zion has been established by the LORD: In it, the needy of His people shall find shelter\u201d (Isaiah 14:32).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pursuant to his saying \u201cTo Your name bring glory\u201d (Ps. 115:1), he now said \u201cPraise the Lord all you nations,\u201d and pursuant to \u201cFor the sake of Your love\u201d (ibid.), he now said \u201cFor great is His steadfast love toward us,\u201d and pursuant to\u00a0 \u201cand Your faithfulness\u201d (ibid.), he said \u201cthe faithfulness of the LORD endures forever.\u201d In other words, His promise abides forever.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image: <\/span><a Two short verses: \"Praise the LORD, all you nations; extol Him, all you peoples\/ for great is His steadfast love toward us; the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Hallelujah.\"\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The psalmist calls out to the nations of the world to praise God, but the reason is interesting. They should praise God because God shows love and kindness to the Jewish people. That seems like an odd reason for other nations to want to praise God. Why should they care how God treats the Jewish people? The answer may be that the other nations can look at the Jews and how they have survived all their trial and tribulations. It declares God\u2019s goodness and urges all of creation to worship.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Chapter Summary:<\/em><br \/>\r\nHaving previously called upon Israel to praise the Lord, the singer now turns to the nations of the world to do the same. The author is perhaps alluding here to the days of Mashiach (Messiah), when, tradition tells us, Israel will praise the Lord from its perspective, and the nations from theirs.<\/p>\r\n<p>This psalm consists of two verses, and as such is the shortest chapter of Sefer Tehillim (Book of Psalms). Along with the following chapter, it comprises the final part of Hallel. In its two verses, the psalmist calls upon the nations to praise God.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Introductory Word:<\/em><br \/>\r\n\u05d4\u05dc\u05dc\u05d5--Hallelu--Praise<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Shimsuh Tehillim--When to Say:<\/em><br \/>\r\nFor an innocent person wrongly blamed--Verse 2 states: \u201cFor His kindness overwhelmed us, and Adonoy\u2019s truth is forever. The occasion for gratitude, then, is collective rather than individual: God has overwhelmed Israel by keeping faith with His commitment to His people.
