It is a short list of the ways that King David will lead his kingdom: try to live without blame, hate crooked dealing, know no evil, hate deceit and proud men, use the counsel of the trustworthy, destroy those who lie and the wicked.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But now read it again. Rashi comments that David is offering his song to God regardless of how God is responding to him. Whether it feels like kindness or harsh judgement, David will sing God\u2019s praises.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this short chapter of Psalms the word <em>\u201c<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tamim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u201d <\/em>is repeated three times. In the first instance David states that he \u201cwill study the way of \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tamim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (101:2).\u00a0 Some translations render \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tamim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d as \u201cblameless\u201d. Rashi interprets the word as \u201csimple-hearted\u201d (Deut. 18:13), while Ramban understands it as \u201cperfect\u201d, which could be either without blemish as in a Temple sacrifice that is required to be \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tamim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d or could refer to perfection of character as in the description of Noah (Genesis 6:9).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malbim, however, gives another interpretation, offering that within the concept of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">temimut<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the quality of consistency. David\u2019s consistency in praising God is evident not just in the first verse of this psalm but throughout all of Psalms, when he offers his song not just in the good times but the difficult as well. And now David is intent on integrating the ways of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tamim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in his own household (101:2).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David is reflecting on his own role among the Jewish nation, and what makes him worthy of God\u2019s kindness and justice. This is not, however, a philosophical contemplation of his relationship with God, but rather a description of how David will make himself worthy. The key to his worthiness and successful leadership is recognized by David to lie in those he chooses to surround himself with: \u201cHe who follows the way of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>tamim<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shall be in my service.\u201d For the duration of this psalm, David describes what <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tamim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means to him: no crooked dealing or perverse thoughts, no one who slanders a friend behind their back and no haughtiness or deceitfulness. David is committed to physically ensuring a barrier between him and negative influences.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rambam said that if one is living in a place with negative influences they should run away, and if they can\u2019t find a place with positive influences they should go live in the woods. David reminds us to choose our friends and our environment wisely. Protecting ourselves from negative influences while not resorting to living under a rock is a difficult line to walk in the 21<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century, but as we understand, was not so easy in biblical times either. One such example of the avoidance of evil reads: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He who slanders his friend in secret I will destroy; I cannot endure the haughty and proud man\u201d (5). The Hebrew text, however, is somewhat opaque.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The original of \u201cHe who slanders\u201d is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">m\u2019loshni<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which appears to be a participle fashioned from the noun <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lashon<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> literally meaning tongue and figuratively meaning language. The nearest similar word in Hebrew would be <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">malshin<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an informer (as in the Amidah blessing of the same name), the denominator common to the two being the pejorative notion of tongue \u201cwagging\u201d\u2014as opposed to the ordinary sense of speaking.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibn Ezra, after dismissing the extra <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yod<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at its end as a superfluous flourish, commented: \u201c<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M\u2019loshni<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an adjective. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>When and Why:<\/em><br \/>\r\nDavid wrote this psalm to explain how he ruled his kingdom and led the people of Israel.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Genre:<\/em><br \/>\r\nPsalm of Royalty--This psalm describes how God reigns supreme. It focuses on the human king of Israel, or upon God as King of Israel.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Chapter Summary:<\/em><br \/>\r\nThis psalm depicts David\u2019s conduct both in his home and in ruling his kingdom. It emphasized the kindness and just judgement which he practiced towards Israel. Some suggest that David composed this psalm when he beseeched God to allow him to build the Beit HaMikdash (Temple).<\/p>\r\n<p>This psalm consists of eight verses, subdivided into two parts.<br \/>\r\nThe first verse serves as an introduction, in which King David proclaims that he will sing of lovingkindness and justice.<br \/>\r\nIn verses 2-4, the Psalmist contemplates how he conducts himself with integrity and distances himself from evil deeds. <br \/>\r\nIn verses 5-8, he speaks of the members of his household, asserting that he makes sure that they too walk with integrity. I shall go about in my heart\u2019s innocence within my house.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>The verb <em>haskil<\/em> (\u201cstudy\u201d) means both to observe or gaze upon and to get wisdom. This is preeminently a Wisdom psalm, proclaiming in terms reminiscent of the Book of Proverbs the speaker\u2019s firm resolution to keep himself from all who do evil and to follow the ways of the just. Many scholars since Hermann Gunkel have claimed that it is a royal psalm, but any language that might be attached to a king is quite oblique--mainly, in the suggestion that the speaker has the power to destroy the wicked and that just men will serve him. Here it is the righteous person who speaks in the first person, which is one way of saying that it is indeed an achievable goal.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>At home too<\/em>. Verse 2 touches on a well-known weakness. It\u2019s actually often the nuclear family that challenges our patience, generosity and our \u201crighteousness.\u201d The real <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzadik<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is on who \u201cwill live without blame within my house.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Pauper - or prince<\/em>? Who is the narrator of the psalm - one of the people, or a leader of some sort? On the one hand, there is not a word that we\u2019re talking about some authority. On the other, there are hints that this person has servants, and most importantly: that they have the power to rid Jerusalem of evildoers: \u201cEach morning I will destroy all the wicked of the land, to rid the city of the LORD of all evildoers.\u201d However, does one have to be a king to do that?
