Though my troubles have, thank God, never been as intense as those of King David or Asaph, I do live in exile and perhaps it\u2019s to my discredit that I don\u2019t feel it as painfully as our Psalms authors. Nevertheless, I\u2019ve had occasion to experience that seemingly no-way-out, inconsolable, sleeplessness-causing despair related in the opening verses of this chapter.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Asaph sounds as if he\u2019s almost haunted by his deep philosophical questions about God, the manner in which he approaches his expression of despondency tells a story of a deeply spiritually connected man. The first thing Asaph says is \u201cWhen I lift up my voice to God and cry, He will hear me (77:2).\u201d His words are quite different from those in Psalm 44:10: \u201cYou have rejected and disgraced us.\u201d That sounds more like an indictment of God\u2019s relationship with the nation, whereas in Asaph\u2019s instance, however deeply discouraged he is personally, he acknowledges his faith that God is listening, and a relationship still exists. Nevertheless, although he knows this truth, it still does not comfort him (77:3).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following his heart-rending declaration of despair, and in the context of his ever-present belief, Asaph poses a series of rhetorical questions with complete honesty of emotion:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will God abandon us forever?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will God again find favour in us?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has God\u2019s kindness come to an end?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is God\u2019s decision final for all generations?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has God forgotten to be gracious?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has God\u2019s anger closed off His mercy?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And how does Asaph then go on to answer these questions for himself? By grasping on to that which he knows intellectually to be true. He knows that God is listening even if there\u2019s a disconnect between that intellectually understanding and what he is currently experiencing in his heart. So, he proceeds to rely on what he knows, and delves into recounting God\u2019s previous deeds that demonstrate favour, kindness and mercy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asaph eventually finds a way to bridge the gap between head and heart.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no shame in having doubts, it happens to the best of us, and always has. Ibn Ezra shared several sharp linguistic insights into these two verses.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI cry\u201d appears twice because it [indicates] ongoing [activity].<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat He may give ear\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ve-ha\u2019azin<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Some say it should be [vocalized] <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ve-he\u2019ezin<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [He gave ear] like <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he\u2019emin<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [he believed], i.e. as a verb in the past tense. R. Moshe [Ibn Chiqatilla] said it is an imperative [give ear!] and I think it is an infinitive [to give ear].<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A great scholar wrote an important book beset with errors and said that \u201cmy hand\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yadi<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) substitutes for \u201cmy eye.\u201d This is unlikely of a knowledgeable person even in casual conversation\u2014let alone in Holy Scripture.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though note Robert Alter\u2019s comment on this: \u201cThe Masoretic Text reads, incomprehensibly, \u201cmy hand [<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yadi<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] flows.\u201d The emendation adopted here, from \u201chand\u201d to \u201ceye\u201d (<em>`<\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eyni<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is based not only on the verb used but also on a similar formulation in Lamentations 3:49: \u201cMy eye streams and is not still, without respite.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some say: \u201cMy hand\u201d signifies my strength and might, as though it melted until it flowed, as in \u201c[Samson\u2019s] shackles melted [off his hands]\u201d (Judges 15:14).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternately, the [prepositional prefix] <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beit<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is missing, as though it said \u201con [account of] my hand\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">b\u2019yadi<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) meaning my suffering and affliction.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFlow all night\u201d [refers to] my cries, as it is preceded by \u201cI cry aloud\u201d even if the word \u201ccry\u201d is absent, as in \u201cWhen He blesses (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beireikh<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), I cannot reverse it\u201d (Numbers 23:20) [which means] He offered a blessing [that I cannot reverse].<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[\u201cFlow\u201d] is metaphorical as in \u201cMy roaring pours forth as water\u201d (Job 3:24).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternately, \u201cMy hand\u201d is my place, as in \u201cYou shall have a place [<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yad<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] [to relieve yourself]\u201d (Deut. 23:13), meaning he will be swept from his place on account of his The very last verse, 21, clearly references the Splitting of the Sea. Ostensibly, the previous 5 verses also describe this event from the Exodus from Egypt. However, upon further investigation, these verses could actually be describing multiple miracles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 17 and 18: \u201cthe waters beheld you, God the waters beheld you they were terrified even the depth trembled. The clouds poured forth waters, the skies sent out a sound and also the arrows went abroad.\" These verses could refer to the Great Flood. The use of \u201cdepths\" and \u201cclouds pouring forth water\" evokes the language used during the flood of Noah.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 19: \"The sound of your thunder rolled like a wheel, the bolts of lightning lit up the world, the earth trembled and shook.\" This verse evokes the giving of the Ten Commandments on Mt. Sinai. Not a water image at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 20: \"In the seas was your way and your path in the great waters and your footsteps were not known.\" This verse returns to the image that ends the chapter- the Splitting of the Sea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asaph is either referencing multiple grand weather related events in Jewish history or he is adding extra flare to the story of the Splitting of the Sea. It's possible, as it always is, that he is doing both. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Chapter Summary:<\/em><br \/>\r\nDespite the decrees and edicts that would affect Israel in exile, Asaf does not come as one challenging and demanding of God, but rather speaks in the language of song and praise. He knows that Israel\u2019s sins are washed clean through harsh judgments.<\/p>\r\n<p>This psalm consists of twenty-one verses, subdivided into two sections. The first verse serves as a heading.<br \/>\r\nIn verses 2-10, the psalmist laments his personal distress, and then extends his lament to the distress of the entire nation. He describes how he cries out to God and prays to Him. He further complains that God seems to have forgotten his people.<br \/>\r\nIn verses 11-21, he tells of God\u2019s wondrous deeds in days of old and asks that they be performed once again. He tells of how God redeemed Israel, and describes how the entire world trembled when God\u2019s glory was revealed during the period leading up to, and including the Exodus from Egypt.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Introductory Words:<\/em><br \/>\r\n<em>Lemnatse\u2019ach<\/em>--To the Conductor<br \/>\r\n<em>Mizmor<\/em>--Musical Accompaniment<br \/>\r\n<em>Selah<\/em>--While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar opinion is that it is a musical notation, instructing the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. The verb \u201cremember\u201d appears in verses 4, 7 and 12: it is a central verb for the entire psalm. What does the psalmist remember? God\u2019s previous closeness, as well as the hurts he suffered, but also God\u2019s great deeds in the past.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleepless. Verses 3 and 5 touch on the physical experience of lack of sleep: \u201c[my eyes] flow all night without respite;\u201d constant weeping, \u201cYou have held my eyelids open; I am overwrought, I cannot speak\u201d I can\u2019t rest and shut my eyes, I can\u2019t even speak because of the emotional strain.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wet victories. Verses 17-20 speak of the power of God in subduing the waters and the heavens.
