(See our citations from the commentary of Rashbam to chapters <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/636\/post\/85044\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">69<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/637\/post\/85093\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This psalm was recited in proximity to the preceding one, which is why it has no superscription such as \u201cTo the leader\u201d or \u201cA psalm.\u201d It was written when [David] was fleeing from his son Absalom; the proof is in the verse \u201cdo not cast me off in old age,\u201d because when he fled from Saul, he was not an old man.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In v.3, the psalmist calls God his \u201crock and fortress\u201d (Alter: \u201crock and bastion\u201d); it is noteworthy that in 4 of the 5 times that the term \u201cmy rock\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sal`i<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) appears in Tanakh, it is accompanied by \u201cmy fortress\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metzudati<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). That coupling is often indicative of what we have previously referred to as a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hendiadys<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Greek for \u201ctwo that are one,\u201d meaning that the two words should be treated as a single compound noun rather than two separate nouns joined by a conjunction. On the analogy, then, of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chesed ve\u2019emet<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>,<\/em> a true act of grace (rather than a gracious act <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a truth) and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ger v\u2019toshav<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a foreign resident (rather than a stranger and a resident), we would translate <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sal`i u-m\u2019tzudati<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as \u201cmy redoubtable fortress.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The appearance in the very next verse of \u201crescue me\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">palteini<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), recalls \u201cthe song that David sang on the day God delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and the hand of Saul\u201d (2 Samuel 22:1), in which the compound \u201cmy redoubtable fortress\u201d is followed immediately by \u201cmy rescuer\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">u-m\u2019falti<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Moreover, the use of these expressions in these two locations strengthens the exegetes\u2019 suppositions regarding the authorship of our psalm and its situation towards the end of David\u2019s life, Growing up, one of the elderly members of our congregation would lead that service. I always remembered them getting emotional when reciting this verse. When reading this chapter, you can really see the full picture of someone looking back on their life and dedication to God and praying to God to take this lifelong service into account in their old age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another insight into this chapter: David noting that even in his mother's womb he would rely on God evokes the image that opens the book of Jeremiah centuries later. David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>When and Why:<\/em><br \/>\r\nDavid might have written this psalm when he was elderly and fleeting from Absalom, his son. In it, he praises God for giving him the strength to escape in his weak and frail condition.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Genre:<\/em><br \/>\r\nPsalm of Individual Lament--This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshipper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Chapter Summary:<\/em><br \/>\r\nThe psalmist speaks here about the tragedy of Absalom, an enemy and pursuer of his own father, King David. Nonetheless, declares the author, God protects the oppressed and remains a refuge for young and old alike.<\/p>\r\n<p>This psalm and the previous one are considered one unit divided into two sections. The previous chapter consists of six verses, and this chapter consists of twenty-four verses.<br \/>\r\nIn chapter 70, verses 2-6 and chapter 71, verses 1-13, the psalmist prays for salvation and describes how his rescue will bring disappointment to his enemies and joy to the righteous.<br \/>\r\nIn chapter 71, verses 14-24, he thanks God for his salvation, and vows to tell of God\u2019s wonders to the coming generation. He further vows to praise God with singing and the playing of musical instruments.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Musical Instruments:<\/em><br \/>\r\n\u05e0\u05d1\u05dc--<em>Nevel<\/em>--A Large Handheld Lyre--played by plucking with fingers.<br \/>\r\n\u05db\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5\u05e8--<em>Kinor<\/em>--A Small Handheld Harp--played with a plectrum (pick).<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Shimush Tehillim-When to Say<\/em><br \/>\r\nTo be saved from being imprisoned--Verse 2 states: \u201cIn Your righteousness save me and rescue me, incline Your ear to me and deliver me.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Where in the Siddur:<\/em><br \/>\r\nVerse 9 comprise one of the verses of Slichot (Penitential Service), recited the week of Rosh HaShanah through Yom Kippur. This translation reads <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">go\u1e25i<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which would make this whole clause almost identical with Psalm 22:10. As the psalmist says, explicitly, \u201cYou have let me experience it, God, from my youth; until now I have proclaimed Your wondrous deeds, and even in hoary old age do not forsake me, God...\u201d (verses 17-18).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>A lot of faith and trust<\/em>. And a wide range of terms to express it. Such as \u201ca sheltering rock for me;\u201d \u201cmy rock and my fortress;\u201d \u201cmy hope;\u201d \u201cmy trust from my youth;\u201d \u201cmy mighty refuge.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Old age<\/em>. Two faces of old age peek through this psalm.
