The words are \u201cYou are my king, O God; decree victories for Jacob!\u201d (5) and the song is composed of its last three Hebrew words: <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzaveih yeshu`ot ya`akov<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xUDe08ZylDE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">listen to Yosef Karduner sing it here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Towards the end of the chapter, however, the psalmist struck a note of caution, stating that \u201cIf we had forgotten the name of our God, or spread forth our hands to a strange god; Would not God search this out\u201d (22-23) and, consequently withdraw His assistance? In anticipation of such abandonment, which he likened to sleep, he prayed: \u201cAwake, why sleepest Thou, O Lord? Arouse Thyself, cast not off forever\u201d (24). This, too, was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AhNOv5xQhAo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">put to song (by Mordechai Ben David) <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and became an anthem of the resistance to the Gaza disengagement of 2005.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, the psalmist tried to \u201cguilt\u201d God into taking up Israel\u2019s cause by arguing that \u201cIt is for Your sake that we are slain all day long, that we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered\u201d (23). Ostensibly the sons of Korah wrote their psalms after Korah died in the wilderness. This psalm, however, has a lot of references that seem anachronistic. For example, verse 3 talks about the conquering of the land of Israel. Verse 12 and Verse 23 discuss mass slaughter of God's people, which sounds more like the destruction of the Temple era than the wilderness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also some metaphors that are unique to the later prophetic period. For example, verse 20 talks about God crushing the people from the place of sea monsters, using the Hebrew word <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tanim<\/span><\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This word only appears in the later prophets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two possibilities here. The first is that this is a prophetic vision. In fact, many commentaries say just this. The sons of Korah have a prophetic vision of the future. The other possibility is that \"the sons of Korah\"\u00a0 should not be taken literally. Korach and his cohorts perished in the aftermath of the rebellion, yet his sons, who repented, survived.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Genre:<\/em><br \/>\r\nPsalm of Communal Lament--This psalm focuses on expressing deep sorrow for the travails of a nation and as a group asking for God\u2019s blessing or intervention.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Chapter Summary:<\/em><br \/>\r\nAs in the previous psalm, this one, too, foretells and describes the future exile. The singers depict the hardship that will ensue, appealing to the soul not to lose hope.<\/p>\r\n<p>This psalm consists of twenty-seven, verses, subdivided into two parts. The first verse serves as a heading.<br \/>\r\nIn verses 2-9, the psalmists tell of God\u2019s wondrous deeds performed on behalf of those who conquered the Land of Israel in days of old, and speak of the salvation that God has brought in his generation as well.<br \/>\r\nIn verses 10-27, they speak of the people\u2019s defeat and shame, and talk of their loyalty to God\u2019s covenant. Even after their enemies mock and slaughter them, they pray to God for salvation.<\/p>\r\n<p>Technical Terminology:<br \/>\r\n<em>Maskil<\/em>--a discerning person; alternatively, a giver of instruction, perhaps denoting a translator of the chapter (Rashi).<br \/>\r\n<em>Selah<\/em>--While its meaning is unclear, the most familiar opinion is that it is a musical notation, instructing the Levitical orchestra to pause its singing and playing of instruments. Alternatively, \u201c<em>Selah<\/em>\u201d may mean \u201ceverlasting\u201d.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Shimush Tehillim--When to Say<\/em><br \/>\r\nFor salvation from enemies--Verse 8 states: \u201cBut You have delivered us from our adversaries, and those who cause hatred against us have You shamed.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Where in the Siddur:<\/em><br \/>\r\nVerse 9 is found in the repetition of the Amidah (Silent Meditation) of Musaf of Rosh HaShanah. Segments of verses 14 and 23 form one of the verses of the long <em>Tachanun<\/em> (Penitential Prayer), recited on Mondays and Thursdays.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Contemporary Song:<\/em><br \/>\r\nVerse 5<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Talmud on Tehillim:<\/em><br \/>\r\nVerse 7: \u201cFor not in my bow do I trust nor does my sword deliver me.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>The Talmud, Bava Batra 123a, explains that Ya\u2019akov (Jacob) acquired that land not by mighty swords or bows and arrows, but rather through his prayers and supplications. By equating the words \u201c<em>charbi<\/em>\u201d--\u201dmy sword\u201d, and \u201c<em>kashti<\/em>\u201d--\u201dmy bow\u201d of this verse with the same terms used by Ya\u2019akov in blessing his sons prior to his death, the Talmud deduces that \u201c<em>charbi<\/em>\u201d refers to prayer, and \u201c<em>kashti<\/em>\u201d refers to a <em>bakashah<\/em>--request. We praised You continually and kept faith with You, yet You allowed our enemies to triumph over us. Which enemies and what historical period are matters of conjecture. Some commentators, without warrant from the text, have wanted to situate this psalm in the second century B.C.E, under Greek domination; others have put it back somewhere in the first Davidic dynasty. The faithfulness of the people opposite the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hester panim<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the hidden face, of God.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>What\u2019s the opposite of light<\/em>? \u201cYour goodwill (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or panecha<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>,<\/em> lit. \u2018the light of Your face\u2019), for You favored them\u201d (verse 4), when the Israelites are desired by God, they enjoy \u201cthe light of His face,\u201d and when not, the face is hidden: \u201cWhy do You hide Your face, ignoring our affliction and distress?\u201d (25).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Martyrdom<\/em>. To die for the loyalty to the faith. Verse 23 became in future generations a sort of motto, \u201cIt is for Your sake that we are slain all day long.\u201d It\u2019s not a coincidence that it\u2019s also in the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selichot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> penitential prayers before the High Holidays in the Polish tradition, and in the special <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">piyyut<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, liturgical poem that begins those prayers in the tradition of the Syrian Jews of Aram Tzuba.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Like sheep to the slaughter<\/em>. That phrase is not only from here (the second half of verse 23). We met this image 224 chapters ago, in the description of the servant of God (Isaiah 53), and also in Jeremiah (chapter 11). But the verse here is definitely a locus classicus for this familiar phrase.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Bar Kochba\u2019s favorite verse<\/em>. The Talmud attributes to Bar Kochba the slogan, \u201cYet You have rejected and disgraced us; You do not go with our armies\u201d (see also Psalm 60:12).
