After his sensationalist ballets (such as the Rites of Spring, 1913), his work underwent a transition, influenced by, among other things, the War, and he became a \u201cneo-classicist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He focused on erasing everything that could be construed as romantic in music, and returned to the old, classic forms, compact ensembles, strived to recreate a sense of humor that was lost with Wagner and Tchaikovsky, and gradually began to establish a dry and accurate form of expression, rhythmic and unexpected, that sounded very \u201cclassical,\u201d but was also different and uniquely his.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn\u2019t until the thirties that new style became more prominent, and turned to expressing more of the sublime in music - and the Symphony of Psalms is one of the first indications of this. The work reflects the tendency of Stravinsky and other neo-classicists (mainly in France) to seek inspiration in the ancient world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most of his life, Stravinsky was not known to be a particularly religious person, but beginning in the mid-twenties, he led the life of a believing Christian. The combination of Stravinsky\u2019s style, his faith and the Latin text gave birth to a creation that immediately became a recognized masterpiece, and an icon of modernism of the interwar years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Stravinsky, the Symphony of Psalms\u00a0 is not \u201ca symphony which includes within it chapters of psalms, but rather chapters of psalms that are arranged in a symphonic style.\u201d And, in fact, the work is built of three psalms in Latin, which become three symphonic movements. First is Psalm 39, pessimistic and full of suffering, and here, in the second movement, Psalm 40, which takes the suffering person to new heights of ecstasy and belief.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This division between verses 2-3 and 4 is very evident in the structure of the movement. It is primarily a fugue for woodwinds, which is heard for the first two minutes without the choir. The theme is essentially new-classical; it sounds like Bach, but with a very modern melody. And: \u201cO favor me, LORD, and save me; O LORD, hasten to my aid\u201d (14).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Psalmist also articulates how he has thanked God for his having been saved on so many occasions (8-10): \u201cThen I said, \u201cSee, I will bring a scroll recounting what befell me\u2026 I proclaimed (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) righteousness in a great congregation; see, I did not withhold my words; O LORD, You must Know it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of particular interest is a third type of giving thanks emphasized by Radak (Rabbi David Kimchi, 1160-1235) with regard to verse 4: \u201cHe put a new song into my mouth, a hymn to our God. May many see (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hear?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) it and stand in awe, and trust in the LORD.\u201d Radak writes: This is to point out that a person is obligated to innovate a song and praise (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as opposed to repeat praises already articulated<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) for every miraculous event that God does on his behalf\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During our current relationship with God, designated as \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hester panim<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (lit. \u201chiding the face\u201d; . when God has discontinued revelation to prophets) each individual will have to compose his own song. Although the psalmist states in verse 10 that he has already described what has happened to him before a large audience, apparently arranging a poetical or even musical version of God\u2019s intervention on his behalf is viewed as being of significance.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding the miracle of the splitting of the sea that was followed by the Jewish people\u2019s triumphant song (Exodus 15), Rav Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook writes in Notebook I, #165:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026Included in faith in God, is the song of life, the song of existence, the song of being. Song is the most penetrating perception\u2026 (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rising up<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) from the depths of the nature that lies deep within us, something that prose can never capture. For this reason, the true lens of life is specifically within the framework of the song of life, whereas the everyday is expressed via prose. Woe to the one who wishes to eliminate from his life the glory of song. He loses the entire content of life and all of its truth. This psalm discusses King David's recovery from distress, most likely an illness, and God's part in saving him. Verse 3 beautifully illustrates the feeling someone has when being saved from the depths. \"He raised me from a turbulent pit, out of the miry mud, and he set my feet upon a rock. He firmly established my steps.\"\u00a0 When one is in such a state, they feel low-down and trapped. Stuck in the mud, as the saying goes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But here, God helps to lift them out of that pit. Not only that, He makes sure the troubled soul is on firm ground and then is able to walk again. With each step in the recovery process God is there. King David is also explaining that God's assistance is not a miraculous extraction out of a pit. There is a process. After Saul disobeyed a direct divine order (to annihilate Amalek), Samuel said: \u201cDoes God desire <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">olah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sacrifices or obedience to His voice?\u201d (1 Samuel 15:22), and Jeremiah, harking back to the theophany at Sinai, said: \u201cI neither spoke to your ancestors nor commanded them on the day I took them out of Egypt, in matters of sacrifice or offerings\u201d (7:22).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That very theme appears to be struck here, too: \u201cYou gave me to understand that You do not desire sacrifice and meal offering; You do not ask for burnt offering and sin offering\u201d (7). How does this connect\u2014a la Jeremiah\u2014to the era of the exodus from Egypt? See the next verse: \u201cThen I said, See, I will bring a scroll recounting what befell me\u201d (8), which Rashi identified with the era of the exodus as \u201cthe day on which the Torah was given.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should you ask: But the Torah is replete with commandments regarding many varieties of sacrifices, some to be brought daily? Radak anticipated your question, to which he replied (7), at some length.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God\u2019s initial instructions to Israel were only that they should obey Him, as stated at Marah: \u201cIf you obey the Lord your God and do that which is upright in His eyes\u2026\u201d (Exodus 15:26). [However,] when they began to sin, He instructed them about sacrifices\u2014individual and communal; individual sacrifices brought by sinners and communal ones to be brought regularly. Since it is likely that there would be many sinners who might not know which sacrifices to bring, the daily communal offerings atone for them\u2014if they repent. Had Israel not sinned in the wilderness, God would not have commanded them about sacrifices since He had not done so initially as indicated by Jeremiah [7:22]\u2026 Likewise, the Ten Commandments, which embrace the whole Torah, make no mention of sacrifices and if man does not sin, he need not bring a sacrifice and he is preferred by God more than one who sins and sacrifices, as Samuel said David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>When and Why:<\/em><br \/>\r\nDavid wrote this psalm when he recovered from his sickness and brought thanksgiving offerings to God.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Genre:<\/em><br \/>\r\nPsalm of Individual Thanksgiving--This psalm emphasizes gratitude for what God has done for the individual.<br \/>\r\nPsalm of Wisdom--This psalm contains teachings and wise advice and is meant to instruct people on how to live a Godly life.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Chapter Summary:<\/em><br \/>\r\nDavid gives thanks to God for healing him from his maladies. His goal in proclaiming a new song (see verse 4) is to teach man that in times of deep affliction he should put his trust in God alone.<\/p>\r\n<p>This psalm consists of eighteen verses, subdivided into two parts. The first verse serves as a heading.<br \/>\r\nIn verses 2-11, King David thanks God for having delivered him in the past, and prays that God will save him from his current distress. These opening words, signaling a prayer already answered, are the gesture of a thanksgiving psalm. Verses 13-18 are the urgent plea of a psalm of supplication. In verses 7-11, the speaker assumes a stance resembling that of the prophets. Rahab is the name of the god of water in Canaanite mythology. The psalmist doesn\u2019t turn to foreign gods, and doesn\u2019t join the followers of falsehood, including false idols.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Negotiations.<\/em> The petitioner comes with a proposal, not empty-handed. I\u2019ll do my bit, and you do yours.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>\u201cAha! Aha!\u201d<\/em> That\u2019s how happiness sounds (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he\u2019ach, he\u2019ach<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Even when it is rejoicing at the downfall of another (verse 16).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Anatomy lesson.<\/em> Look out for different body parts throughout the psalm, and their roles: \u201cmy feet..my mouth\u2026 \u2018ears\u2019 [understand]... \u2018intestines\u2019 [inmost parts]... \u2018lips\u2019 [words]... \u2018my
