While describing the way of the wicked, David explains as follows in verse 5: \u201cIn bed he plots mischief; he is set on a path of no good, he does not reject evil.\u201dIn this one verse, David seems to be repeating the same idea in a mixed way. What does the wicked person being in their bed have to do with the rest of the verse? Why does he set himself on the path, and also does not abhor evil?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What David is describing here is the evolution of the act of doing something wrong.\u00a0 In the quiet moment, when someone lies in their bed, the thought pops in. A simple thought to do something wrong.\u00a0 That thought then becomes a plan of action in that quiet moment. The next day the person awakens and begins to set themselves on the path to no good. Once on that path, he no longer rejects the sin he has planned to do. Having spent so much time planning and setting himself on the path, the sin no longer seems like a bad idea. In this one verse David is warning that in order to stop the action, one must be aware at the time the thought pops into one's head to cut it off. (6-7)<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This quartet of divine attributes recurs in \u201cRighteousness (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzedek<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and justice (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mishpat<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are the base of Your throne; steadfast love (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chesed<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and faithfulness (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emet<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) stand before You\u201d (89:15, albeit in a slightly different sequence and with <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emet<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> standing in for <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emunah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Righteousness and justice, as a pair, also occur in Psalms 97:2 as well as in Proverbs 1:3 and 2:9.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The allusion to divinity (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eil<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) as a form of hyperbole (\u201cthe high mountains\u201d) was addressed in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/583\/post\/80950\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our comments to Psalms 16<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the use of \u201cthe great deep\u201d (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t\u2019hom rabah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) recalls the poetic description of the inception of the flood when: \u201cAll the fountains of the great deep burst apart, and the floodgates of the sky broke open\u201d (Gen. 7:11). The description of God\u2019s beneficence as \u201clike the high mountains\u201d and its contrasting depiction of His justice as \u201cthe great deep\u201d is an expression of all-inclusivity, reminiscent of \u201cfrom the smallest (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">katan<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to the largest (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gadol<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u201d (Gen. 19:11, or reversed, as in 2 Chr. 34:30) and \u201cfrom east to west\u201d (Malachi 1:11, Psalms David composed over seventy of the 150 psalms of Sefer Tehillim.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>When and Why:<\/em><br \/>\r\nDavid wrote this psalm about the heretics who pretend they are righteous and lie about their true beliefs.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Genre:<\/em><br \/>\r\nPsalm of Individual Lament--This psalm was written from the perspective of the individual worshiper, who cries out to God in his time of need. It is characterized as an address to God involving a complaint, followed by a request and ending with an expression of trust. <br \/>\r\nPsalm of Wisdom--This psalm contains teachings and wise advice and is meant to instruct people on how to live a Godly life.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Chapter Summary:<\/em><br \/>\r\nKing David warns man against being led astray by the false arguments of the wicked. Man must know and acknowledge his Master, David implores, and realize that it is He who dispenses reward for good and retribution for evil.<br \/>\r\nThis psalm consists of thirteen verses, subdivided into three parts. The first verse serves as a heading. <br \/>\r\nIn verses 2-5, King David describes the thoughts and actions of the wicked. <br \/>\r\nIn verses 6-10, he expresses his trust that God\u2019s lovingkindness is so great that \u201cin the heavens is Your kindness, Your faithfulness is as far as the skies.\u201d He also speaks of God\u2019s faithfulness to those who keep His covenant.<br \/>\r\nIn verses 11-13, the Psalmist offers a prayer for protection against the wicked.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Shimush Tehillim-When to Say:<\/em><br \/>\r\nFor protection against evil tidings-Verse 12 states: \u201cand let not the hand of the wicked move me away.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><em>Where in the Siddur:<\/em><br \/>\r\nVerse 7 is one of the verses of <em>Tzidkatcha<\/em>, a short prayer following the Amidah of Mincha (afternoon service) of Shabbat. (of God\u2026)\r\n\r\n","post_main_content_content":"<p>36:2 \u201cCrime\u2019s utterance to the wicked within his heart: \u2018There is no fear of God before my eyes.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>The beginning of this psalm adopts an anomalous rhetorical device. \u201cCrime,\u201d as a personified figure, is presented speaking its pernicious speech within the heart of the wicked person. The Masoretic Text reads \u201cmy heart,\u201d which has made interpreters strain to imagine a quasi- prophetic speaker who claims to know what Crime says inwardly to the wicked. More plausibly, a couple of ancient versions read \u201chis heart.\u201d In any case, this odd beginning also makes the genre of the psalm difficult to identify. It is not a supplication, but it puts into play the supplication\u2019s characteristic contrast between the upright and the evil and also its confidence in God\u2019s overarching justice. The psalm deals with the psychological basis of the behavior of the wicked, and the faith of the righteous. The wicked \u201chas no sense of the dread of God,\u201d but the righteous has much more than fear of punishment. He has a belief in his faithfulness and lovingkindness, and he chooses to cling to that.<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The biggest<\/em>. And everywhere. That\u2019s the meaning of the landscape depiction in verse 7 - from the tallest to the deepest - \u201cYour beneficence is like the high mountains; Your justice like the great deep.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The enemy within<\/em>: pride. The psalmist apparently has no connection to the wicked, because their starting point regarding life and God is completely different. Despite that, he still fears that something, either internal or external, will affect him and set him on the slippery slope to evil.\u00a0 \u201cLet not the foot of the arrogant tread on me, or the hand of the wicked drive me away\u201d (verse 12).<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Is everything internal<\/em>? Perhaps the whole conflict between the righteous and the wicked takes place within the soul of the psalmist?
