who is created in who's image?\r\n\r\n","post_main_content_content":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not every psalm is worth emulating. This psalm illustrates the danger of moral superiority and what happens when people do bad things in the name of God.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the spirit of Psalm 18, which like so many others is attributed to David, I\u2019m reminded of a quotation attributed to thinkers from Henri Rousseau to Voltaire to Twain, \u201cGod created man in his own image. And man, being a gentleman, returned the favor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the psalm, God doesn\u2019t just save the author in his time of distress. God grants the author the permission to destroy everyone else.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We launch holy wars and inquisitions; we create laws and excommunications; we police other people\u2019s bodies, religious practices, and lives; we do evil in the name of God. Because we feel that we are innocent, our hands are clean, we are pure, we are loyal, and we are blameless.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And with that sense of innocence, we can vanquish those we feel who are not blameless, those who we feel are perverse. They may cry out to God, but we don\u2019t care, because we know that he wouldn\u2019t answer them. We turn them to dust, and walk all over them. With that sense of superiority, we make others submissive, subjugate them, and treat them poorly, because we know what God truly wants.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cognitive dissonance in Psalm 18 is overwhelming. 18:31 says that \u201cGod is a shield to all who seek refuge in him.\u201d but 18:42 intimates that they cried out to God, but he did not answer them, and God let them be destroyed.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constantine saw a cross of light in the sky, and had a vision of the words \u201c\u1f10\u03bd \u03c4\u03bf\u03cd\u03c4\u1ff3 \u03bd\u03af\u03ba\u03b1\u201d, or \u201cin this, conquer.\u201d The Ku Klux Klan wore white, as a symbol of purity. They burned crosses on Black people\u2019s lawns, elevating the act of senseless hate into a religious ceremony.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.929.org.il\/lang\/en\/page\/570\/post\/80021\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The women who screamed at Elizabeth Eckhart from Psalm 3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> probably went to Bible study classes and read themselves into the Psalms as well. The people who forced their children into reparative therapy, who later committed suicide, also thought they were doing God\u2019s work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as 18:48 makes very clear, it\u2019s all about power.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Image: by Ezra Butler<\/span><\/p>","post_main_content_image":{"id":81008,"alt":"","title":"ps18-EButler - Most of his life he lived in Amsterdam. His main historical significance lies in his founding of the \u201cNorth German\u201d school of organ music: a dynasty of students, players and composers, which reached its height, and its end, in Johann Sebastian Bach. From the other end, his choral works represent the epitome and summation of the Franco-Flemish school of the Renaissance, during which, for over 150 years, composers from the Low Countries dominated the composition of polyphonic choir music throughout all of Europe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This lovely motet (short, religious polyphonic composition) of Sweelinck\u2019s is based on verses 2-3 from the great song of Ps. 18. This is a part of a collection of 37 motets, called \u201cHoly Hymns\u201d that were composed in 1619. With this, Sweelinck completed a motet cycle that he composed for all 150 psalms!<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Ps 18, as a song of thanksgiving, he expresses an attitude of humility, and submissiveness to the Creator (as opposed to later Baroque compositions on the same text, such as Scarlatti and Rameau, who emphasized its festiveness and grandeur). He retains the style of the Renaissance, wherein five equal voices share the melodies, via imitation. The publisher, as befitted the style of the times, added a part for organ, with chords - but apparently not with the permission of the composer, and today it is mostly performed a capella.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tune which expresses the love of God develops as a web of imitations between the voices, at the same time as a very decisive counter-melody is sounded - on the words \u201cMy fortress.\u201d The contrast between the two melodies is evident in the polyphonic braid, with the intensity reaching its peak on \u201cO LORD, My rock.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new web of continuous imitations opens up on the words \u201cmy rescuer\u201d (Latin uses more syllables: \u201cet liberator meus\u201d), in a motif of descending scales that express the psalmist\u2019s being pursued. So much of their respective texts is identical, that it is difficult to say which is more perplexing: their overall similarities or the striking differences? The former puzzlement raises a significant question of authorship and redaction, namely, why would David\u2019s \u201csong to the Lord after the Lord had saved him from the hands of all his enemies and from the clutches of Saul\u201d (1) appear in Psalms after already appearing in 2 Samuel?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or, alternatively, why are more psalms\u2014particularly those that bear allusions to events in David\u2019s life\u2014not incorporated into the Books of Samuel? The latter perplexity raises equally significant questions about texts and their recensions, namely, why do two versions of the same song, which are about 80% identical to one another, still have so many and profound differences?<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radak\u2014whose habit of comparing parallel biblical texts we have noted in several of our previous remarks in the Early Prophets\u2014is the only medieval exegete to explicitly address this issue, saying: \u201cThis poem is written in the Book of Samuel, although there are some differences in wording, but the substance remains the same,\u201d a comment very similar to his observation on synonymous parallelism: \u201cThe subject is repeated through different words.\u201d He added: \u201c[David] composed this song at the end of his life, when God had given him relief from all his enemies.\u201d Ibn Ezra, too, commented on the circumstances of its composition, saying: \u201cHe [David] composed this song when he affirmed to his men that he would no longer accompany them into battle.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of all the differences, large and small, one is outstanding. The concluding verse in both versions displays a textual variant. In 2 Samuel 22:51, the spelling (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ketiv<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mgdil<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while the pronunciation (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keri<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migdol<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In Psalms 18:51, it is reversed; written <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">m-g-d-l<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and meant to be pronounced <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magdil<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* (suggesting that the unvocalized spelling would be pronounced <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migdol<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This distinction plays itself out in the incorporation of this verse in the penultimate paragraph of the grace after meals (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">birkat ha-mazon<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The printed instructions in nearly every siddur stipulate that the word is to be pronounced <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magdil<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on weekdays and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migdol<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Shabbat. However, there are those who maintain that its pronunciation should always follow that of Psalms (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magdil<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and that that the assignment of the alternative (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migdol<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) to Shabbat (\u05d1\u05e9\u05d1\u05ea - <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be-ShaBat<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is a misreading of a marginal note that merely indicated its textual origin: in 2 Samuel (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shmuel Bet<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; abbreviated \u05d1\u05e9\u201d\u05d1 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B-Sh-B<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*This final note follows the Masoretic text of the authoritative Aleppo Codex. He is the author of The Tanhuma-Yelammedenu Literature: Studies in the Evolution of the Versions (Gorgias Press, 2003). In 2006, Bregman was appointed the Herman and Zelda Bernard Distinguished Professor of Jewish Studies at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro, where he also headed the program in Jewish Studies, until 2013. Bregman retired from UNCG as of July 31, 2017. Roughly the same superscription and indeed a close version of our entire psalm is found in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/II_Samuel.22?lang=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 Samuel 22<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This song of thanksgiving and praise of God contains some of the most powerful poetry in Scripture. For example, the psalmist describes the appearance of God: \u201cThen the earth rocked and quaked; the foundations of the mountains shook, rocked by His indignation; smoke went up from His nostrils, from His mouth came devouring fire; live coals blazed forth from Him. He bent the sky and came down, thick cloud beneath His feet. He mounted a cherub and flew, gliding on the wings of the wind\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Psalms.18.8-11?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">verses 8-11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the course of this psalm, David exclaims: \u201cThe way of God is perfect. The word of the Lord is pure. He is a shield to all who seek refuge in Him\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Psalms.18.31?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18:31<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/II_Samuel.22.31?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 Samuel 22:31<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Bereishit_Rabbah.44.1?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midrash Bereshit Rabbah 44:1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> interprets this verse: \u201cThe way of God is perfect\u201d - If His way is perfect, how much more is He Himself perfect! \u201cThe word of the Lord is pure (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tzrufah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u201d. Rav said: Were not the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mitzvot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> given so that man might be purified (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">le-tzaref<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) by them? Do you really think that the Holy One cares if an animal is slaughtered by the front or by the back of the neck? Therefore, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mitzvot<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were only given to purify God\u2019s creatures. \u201cPerfect\u201d \u2013 this refers to Abraham, who walked in the ways of perfection (see<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Genesis.17.1?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genesis 17:1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). For God purified him in the fiery furnace (see<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Bereishit_Rabbah.38.13?lang=bi&amp;with=all&amp;lang2=en\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midrash Bereshit Rabbah 38:13<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). And, as regards Abraham, we also see that God \u201cis a shield to all who seek refuge in Him.\u201d For God says to Abraham: \u201c\u201cFear not, Abram, I am a shield to you\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Genesis.15.1?lang=bi&amp;aliyot=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genesis 15:1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In discussing the reasons for the commandments, Maimonides<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sefaria.org.il\/Guide_for_the_Perplexed%2C_Part_3.26.1?lang=bi\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guide for the Perplexed 3.26.1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ponders this Midrashic passage: \u201c\u2026What difference does it make to God whether a beast is killed by cutting the neck in front or in the back?\u00a0 Surely the commandments are only intended as a means of purifying man, as it says: \u201cThe word of the Lord is pure (i.e. purifying).\u201d This passage is very strange [suggesting God does not care how we perform <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shechitah<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">]. And has no parallel in the writings of our Sages. It focuses on the human king of Israel, or upon God as King of Israel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chapter Summary:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With all his battles completed, King David sings praises of thanksgiving to God in whom he has taken refuge. God alone has shielded him and straightened his path, in the process giving him strength and teaching him how to battle. Unlike Saul, whose kingdom was short lives, \u201cHe increases the deliverance of His king, and does kindness with His anointed, to David and his seed, for evermore.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This psalm contains fifty-one verses, subdivided into two parts. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 1 serves as an introduction. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verses 2-32, King David describes his prayer in time of trouble, and illustrates how God\u2019s strength saved him from his enemies. He further explains how God has rewarded him according to his merits.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In verses 33-51, King David describes the battle and victory, and, paralleling the verses above, illustrates how God allowed him to go out, pursue and overtake his enemies. He ends the psalm with praise and gratitude to God.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shimush Tehillim-When to Say:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To ward off bandits-Verse 1 demonstrates how God delivered the psalmist from the hand of his enemies. In verse 18 he states: \u201cHe rescued me from my mighty enemy\u201d, and in verse 49 he declares: \u201cYou rescue me from my enemies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where in the Siddur:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This psalm is a mirror reflection of Shmu\u2019el Bet (Samuel II), chapter 22, recited as the Haftarah of the seventh day of Passover.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 32 is recited before Ein K\u2019Eilokeniu (one of the concluding prayers of Shacharit).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verse 51 is part of the weekday version of Birkat HaMazon--Grace after Meals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biblical Personalities:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shaul-Saul-the first King of Israel. After Saul disobeyed God\u2019s command to destroy all of Amalek, the prophet Samuel dethroned Saul and anointed David to start a new monarchic line.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biblical Places:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\r\n<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heichal--Holy Temple--a term used to refer to the inner sanctuary of the Temple in Jerusalem. The Heichal contained the Holy of Holies, the resting place of the Aron HaKodesh (Holy Ark)*. This \u201c<em>shirah<\/em>\u201d (song) is a distinguished member of a purported group of ten Biblical texts all referred to by the term \u201c<em>shirah<\/em>,\u201d listed in the midrashic literature. Who\u2019s on the list? Depends which version, but the better known among them are: The Song of the Sea (Exodus 15); The Song of the Well (Numbers 21); The song of <em>parashat Ha\u2019azinu<\/em> (Deut. 32) and the Song of Deborah (Judges 5)<\/span><\/li>\r\n\t<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>The servant of the Lord<\/em>. David, in verse 1 joins Moses, who was called \u201cservant of God\u201d many times, and Joshua who merited the name once.
